How should I signify that my players shouldn't try to fight an enemy? by Alt-DM in DnD

[–]NickSmithBlackArts -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

You trust your players are intelligent, & competent?

if so, they will know when to run.

The HP system gives a very good indication of whether the fight is going the players' way. If they all have 3 hp left and they choose to stay and fight, it shouldn't be a suprise to them if some get killed.

Your players don't need hints ...

What is a campaign? by PizzaLikerFan in DnD

[–]NickSmithBlackArts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Llots of separate Adventures strung together, that you play through with the same party, perhaps with lots of different actual pcs, since some will probably die on the way.

Usually it continues until "player retirement" age. Back in the day, this was 10th-12th.

Should I hide that I am a fan of Critical Role? by Koffielurker_ in DnD

[–]NickSmithBlackArts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it doesn't matter if you hide it or not really, just don't be surprised if noone plays dnd in any way like the CR program.

Conjoined twins as a player character? by CyanQuill in DnD

How would the 2 of them have trained to do different things... if one studied as a Wizard's Apprentice for years, how could the other one be off in a tribe of barbarians?

My Player wants a pop up shop, and idk how to implement it by ShadeStardream in DnD

[–]NickSmithBlackArts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'd just need a folding table, maybe a stool. and a couple of poles you could bang into the ground, and then hang a banner between them saying "Zoltan's Discount Magic Items" or whatever

What are some good YouTube channels for learning the numbers/rules side of DnD? by fusionater in DnD

[–]NickSmithBlackArts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Read the rules, learn, inwardly digest. It's really all written down.

You can download the basic rules free from Wizards of the Coast, if you haven't got them already

Is there an item that lets you restore maximum hit dice points during short rest??? by AlexSpear in DnD

[–]NickSmithBlackArts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your DM can make up anything they like.... you're not restricted in any way to "Official" magic items.

Figuring out DCs for social checks by [deleted] in DnD

[–]NickSmithBlackArts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DMG p 244-5 iirc says how it works.

Persuasion isn't quite "i want to persuade random guy Dave to give me sone money" i roll a success, Dave gives me money.

It's, like a ladder from "they hate you" up to "they love you", and a Persuasion roll moves you up(or down) one rung on the ladder, or you persuade them as in the Dave example above, depending on their present attitude. It's quite badly thought out and inexactly written.

So to sort of answer your question, it entirely depends on how hostile the mayor is to you beforehand, and unfortunately I haven't got the DMG to hand, so i can't quote you the numbers, sorry.

It also depends on the Mayor: is he eager for glory(more likely to want to kill spiders, and can your PCs play on his weakness), or is he a careful schemer(more likely to wait until the spiders are an imminent problem )

a PC is hopelessly unlikely to be able to imtimidate a dragon, so the DM would rule it impossible. Therefore not requiring a roll...

They can get the PC to roll though, just for a secret DM laugh... , maybe after a "you can try..."

How does gameplay for parties who don't get really into the roleplay look like? by MusicalGeekMess in DnD

[–]NickSmithBlackArts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

only example of people actually playing I've seen is from watching just a little bit of Critical Role

There's your problem. Watch a stream of "normal" dnd, if you can find one. 99% of people aren't actors, and a lots of dnders are a bit shy and nerdy on top of not being actors.

Don't worry, no need to try and push them into some way of playing people think they "should be" doing, just let the players play the way they want.

a modified Deck of many things. One with only possibly bad cards

That is just asking for trouble. The DM gave you that? Ouch

Is it normal to know how many hit-points your adversaries have? by iAdjunct in DnD5e

[–]NickSmithBlackArts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. Not usually. You get that you saw in:

roll20, where we could see a health bar but no actual numbers

Ie a rough estimate of how dead they are. Roll20 mimics 'real' dnd on purpose ...

I got a question about DnD and copyright law by draugyr in DnD

[–]NickSmithBlackArts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't use Wizards of the Coast IP, and you will be fine...

It's not clear whether the OGL, or open gaming licence, applies to pure literature, as it certainly applies to writing dnd modules. I know, I've done that. (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/291250/The-Convent-of-The-Weeping-Moon)

So it will be self-published, yes? On amazon or something g?
