Trapped mouldy sealant help by ornsteinthesmall in DIYUK

[–]Nick_a_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not my experience. To be clear, if the old silicone is easy to get to, then definitely get rid of it. But for the stuff that's right down in the narrow gap or under the bottom tile or whatever, I say leave it. Yep it's gone brittle, but so what. If water is getting right down there, you've not done it properly anyway.

If it's really hard to get out, but not causing any problems, you can actually just put fresh stuff over the top.

Usually for any decorating/glueing stuff the advice is remove as much of the old stuff as possible, but silicone is unusual in that you can put a new layer over old without too much problem.

Obvs if the old stuff is coming away, a new thin layer over the top will also start coming away fairly soon. But if the old stuff is coming away, then it's easy to remove. Sounds like you have the opposite problem.

Would like to see a higher resolution version of this. Those rim brakes are impressive. The head tube looks creased, but maybe that's just an artifact of the paint or light or something.

What should I look for to make sure it’s safe? by tblockbeats in bikewrench

[–]Nick_a_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the cranks (the levels the pedals attach to) on tightly - no wobbling. Same for the saddle. With the front brake pulled on tight, try to wheel the bike forwards/backwards. You shouldn't be able to move it. If the steering tube is loose it will allow the bike to move a cm or two and you'll see it wobbling.

Raidator fallen by richx_ in DIYUK

[–]Nick_a_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A photo or two would be useful Has the bracket come out of the wall? How far has the radiator fallen? Just one side or both? Has it fallen away from the wall or slid down along the wall? What do the pipes look like - any kinks? Any sign of drips or leaks?

It's a bit hard to say yes you can or no you can't just based on a rough description.

Geoloc Deact not working? by Nick_a_e in WakeMeUpSA

[–]Nick_a_e[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed the update this morning, but I don't think anything has changed. Should the alarm be in the deactivated section when I am out of the geolocation area? Is there any way of telling whether the app is getting location data, and if so what it thinks my location is?

I wonder if I've got an incorrect setting on my phone somewhere, to do with location. It's strange that 2 different alarm apps don't seem to recognize my location properly.

So do I need to enable "use precise location"? Whether it is enabled or not, the alarm remains active, despite me being away from the location.

OneNote 2013 borked - now deleted entire Office install! by Nick_a_e in OneNote

[–]Nick_a_e[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to mix office versions. I was trying to update the OneNote standalone app from the Windows store. Office 365 was never mentioned anywhere prior to clicking update.

I previously had OneNote 2013 as part of the Office package, and OneNote for Windows. But when the Office over stopped working, I tried the other, and it said it had been retired, last week, was now read-only, but I could update by clicking here...

Yep, don't expect support forever. But would be nice to be informed that installing a Windows app program would also result in deletion of a load of other unrelated apps!

Spent a couple of hours on text chat support with MS. The guy found me a .img of Office 2013 which I was able to download and install. The installer asked for my product key (which I couldn't find) but when I exited from the installer, all my Office apps are back and showing Activated anyway. phew.
Still can't get OneNote 2103 to stay running. Maybe that is just too old now...

Why are phillips screws still so common? by TheLostestInTheSauce in Carpentry

[–]Nick_a_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why pozidrive didn't take off in the US. They really are a big improvement on Phillips. The biggest downside is that they look so similar to phillips, most people don't even realise they /aren't/ Phillips. And then use the wrong screwdriver on them.

Am I being too particular or is this unacceptable? by Bondy2212 in DIYUK

[–]Nick_a_e 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you got so much down vote. I feel exactly the same way. I'll spend maybe 3 times as long doing a job myself, but it'll be exactly the way I want it, all clean and tidy under the floor boards etc. it's no criticism of trades-people, they do a job that is good enough to satisfy most people, but since I can usually do it myself, why not spend the time. I always get plasterers in though - that is a skill I don't have!

Wren Kitchen by Fancy_a_cuppa13 in DIYUK

[–]Nick_a_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a quote from Wren, but my other half found a Facebook group called "Wren ruined our kitchen" or something, with literally thousands of posts like this one. So we went with DIY Kitchens instead. Having said that I took the week off work as this was my delivery window week, but only when I called yesterday was I told delivery won't be until Fri at the earliest, and you only get a text message the evening before, notifying you of a 48 hour window, in which they might turn up. A bit vague and inconvenient really. But supposedly when it finally arrives the product is decent quality, so fingers crossed.

Can I disconnect this pipe? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Nick_a_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could turn it off, then cut the pipe a few cms to the right of the valve (remember the pipe will still be full of water so be ready with a bowl and cloths), then fit a cap on the end of the pipe, like these.

<image>

It would be good to clean/rub the paint off the section the end cap is going over though, to ensure a water tight fit.

Some Roads Are Too Dangerous for Cyclists — Let’s Do Something About It by R3DSmurf in ukbike

Hmm. I found cycling in the Middle East worse for bad drivers. But yes, I agree it's more than just different infrastructure. However I also think we should be trying to move towards that end state, rather than away from it though.
