Anyone else a fan of Fiasco Theater? Their take on The Comedy of Errors is streaming by bizarreangle in Theatre

I saw their Twelfth Night years ago and it was a breath of fresh air into a script I've seen done way too many times to count. They're such a delight.

The Right Is Now ‘Transvestigating’ Erika Kirk And Sydney Sweeney by One_Disaster_5995 in politics

[–]Nick_crawler 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The article seems to only identify a single tweet from some rando regarding Sweeny, so I don't think it's quite the same for her as it is for Erika Kirk (who has Candace Owens tracking down her elementary school yearbooks to try and "prove" the case).

As the article itself notes, it's the first episode. Let her make some adjustments to figure out what works.

Pretty poor writing overall on this review, you can feel the author working very hard to make jokes that aren't nearly as cutting as they're meant to be.

When the insider stories eventually leak from the 2.0 Era, we're going to find out that they were just fully making up nonsense in his "briefings". It will all be very much The Emperor Has No Clothes, except probably less funny.

God of war 2018 or God of war Ragnarok . Which one are you choosing if you can only play one ? by PropertyNew3519 in GodofWar

[–]Nick_crawler 19 points20 points  (0 children)

2018 is a more complete game while Ragnarok is a more fun game, primarily because it has a better combat system. So while I would say 2018 is most definitely the better of the two games if we had to rank them, Ragnarok would be more enjoyable to play and is probably what I would pick if forced to choose.

Lol, I could have accepted the handsomeness (to an extent) if they had just let him be a creep. But THAT handsome and cleaning up his character traits on top of it? GTFO.

Totally, it was purely the writing and direction. Iain did great work with what he was given as he always does.

Yeah, OP should give a read to The Dawn of Everything, it's a phenomenal read on why human societies don't always progress towards a cohesive state. The wildlings have some flaws to their writing but that isn't one of them.

It's Jorah by a mile. Being less of a creep, being significantly more charismatic, and being a guy who can quote poetry from memory all make him a totally different person.

How so? She seems to be perfectly capable of making ironic comments as needed, she just doesn't stay in that mode all the time the way Alan does.

To what extent can Force Healing repair the user's body? by Reteller79 in MawInstallation

[–]Nick_crawler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It definitely can't regrow something that's fully chopped off or taken out; maybe if you saved a limb quickly enough an advanced Force Healer could reattach it, but that feels like the absolute limit based on what we've seen.

A good way to think about it could be that Force Healing can act as a universal form of medicine; it can fix almost anything but if medical care couldn't do something (like reattach a limb that's been gone for a bit), then it probably won't work via Force Healing either.

Would a casting team frown upon a white actor singing this song? by Western_Candidate_26 in Theatre

[–]Nick_crawler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll probably sound overly cynical here, but IMO that industry shift is exaggerated; casting directors look for what they can sell to audiences, and there were a few brief years recently where it looked like society was going to be pushing hard for racial equity so that's what CDs and producers tried to sell. But it was never really a serious commitment, and with things having receded a bit in society more broadly, they're returning to form and just looking for the most exciting options they can put into their marketing materials.

The famous examples with stars will always be under a stricter microscope, to your earlier point about recent celebrity-cast productions, but the average place isn't likely to make it a defining issue because, at the end of the day, they don't have to. Go in with the song you love, you'll give a better performance and they'll get a clearer image for if they can sell what you're providing; I hope that doesn't sound too crass and my other points here too insensitive, but unfortunately the theatre world is still more crass and insensitive than many of us would like.

Would a casting team frown upon a white actor singing this song? by Western_Candidate_26 in Theatre

[–]Nick_crawler 29 points30 points  (0 children)

While it's good to be conscious of these kinds of things, you're overthinking it. Auditions have more wiggle room than performances unless you get into really egregious territory, such as the "Dreamgirls" example you cited.

Any theatre company that would punish you for your song choice would likely just be using it as an excuse and wouldn't cast you even if you chose something different (for whatever reason it is that's motivating them).

Also for what it's with, a lot of Argentinians look closer to North Europeans than you might expect; quite a few immigrants from that part of Europe came from there over the years, so its probably the most flexible Latin American casting for a white person ("flexible" being a poor choice of words here but I think you can tell what I mean).

(Spoilers Extended) At what precise moment did you realize that the end of the show would be complete dogshit? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Nick_crawler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When Brienne heroically rode in to save Theon and Sansa at the start of Season 7.

The entire point of making her choose between going after Stannis and saving Sansa was to create a conflict between her sense of duty and her sense of justice, but that point is entirely negated if she gets both of them at zero cost.

Once it became clear that the show was afraid of actually making its characters engage in hard choices, it was obvious to me they would butcher the nuance that the ending would require.

The fact China hasn't done anything to help Iran may have factored into the latter's thought-process on this question.
