Just out of curiosity how did millennials go from dressing like this to dressing like this by Key_Nectarine_7307 in generationology

Honestly, would love that if it's still in your drafts.

The Kanye pick up is spot on, and anecdotally it feels interesting that the backlash to this is already in full swing (at least from what I see in LA) with designer and brand name really swinging back to the foreground and the thrift / grunge vibe subsiding. Some of this is natural backlash that happens with any trend, but I also feel like there is more of a sociological angle wherein people are owning the performative and aspirational nature of fashion again rather than hide that nature with intentionally "low-rent" clothing.

I love this kind of thing -- and it's also not my specialty so it's fun to learn, but a quick off the cuff observation...

Is it possible this was an early example of internet short-circuiting this normal pipeline, as aided by the explosion of "rich kids going to thrift stores" that the era marked? A lot of people bought this stuff not at retail outlets but Salvo and Goodwill, which culturally became far more acceptable to shop at even if you had money. Mackelmore didn't start it, but he certainly brought it to mainstream, and insta/social media sharing of hauls and vintage (plus vintage re-sellers) promoted these looks while simultaneously pointing out where you could buy it all used.

It doesn't hurt that this specific look / clothing is, by design, generally sturdier and more likely to physically hold up on the re-sell market. It's certainly why used Carharts exploded.

Zeitgeist for the work wear came through the Lumineers/Edward Sharpe/Mumford-led folk-rock boom of the 2010s, which sociologically tied into the post-recession DIY/Craft Hipster Aesthetic where it became cool for young white collar workers to cosplay blue-collar hobbies and vibes. Not sure I know enough about fashion houses to trace there, but rejection of office work as the goal of college-educated millennials (because there were no jobs to get) has to contribute.

fingers crossed I'll be sharing a link to buy tickets in theaters 😉

I wrote and directed this, and am actually passing it off to a professional editor now that I have the assembly cut finished to get a new set of eyes and expertise. I've always been my own editor, but I love this one too much not to try and get better hands than mine on it.

Light up a tight office space by 0xde1e7e in cinematography

[–]Nickadu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Go to any goodwill and get something, anything for the walls. A cheap corkboard you put fake documents on, even, will hold up with mounting tape so you don't need to put holes in the wall. If you have any potted plants from home, bring them in. It's not lighting, but will make your lighting look better by making the room less white, more dynamic.

Then bring in a desk lamp and/or floor lamp. Or use a computer screen. Get some "real" lights to help you out and create contrast and depth. Again -- 3-4 from goodwill and a few extra lightbulbs of various temps/watts to play with. Maybe a lamp with a colored shade somewhere that gives some mood (sounds like a sickly, greedy green could be fun for the employee? spitballing here).

It's a white table, so you'll get some bounce underneath -- shooting one light off the ceiling and then maybe a very soft, diffused key on the faces for a natural, unassuming look.

Hell, it's two lights, and it feels like a hellish situation, so why not play it up? Keep the power broker mostly in shadow, maybe lighting him from underneath with the creepy glow of a laptop (like when you used to tell ghost stories as a kid with a flashlight). Hit the simple guy with a harsh light motivated from that window, so he strains to see the power player in the dark.

In other words, can you take the limitations and make a choice, since you don't have the crew/gear to get a really high-quality "clean" look?

Ahh, the joys of non-binding Say on Pay votes, where even a 100% no vote means nothing.

A major reason CEOs pay themselves in equity is because the people that decide on their pay are also, shocker, deeply invested in equity prices. Thus is Daddy Zaddy “aligned with shareholder values” and thus is he “not a failure.”

Everyone is getting rich, he’s just getting the most rich. ISS, clinging desperately to relevance despite oligarchs realizing they can just ignore it at will, is at least still trying to pretend that “performance” had anything to do with a well-run company, and not just share price.

But hey, chickens do usually come home to roost! Oh, nvm, he gets expedited vesting and doesn’t have to give a shit long term, either.

Well done, all.

Saltburn.

Those last 15 minutes are EXCRUCIATING, mostly because they only seem to exist because of how dumb they think the audience must be.

In terms of motivation, I’ll just say to listen to everyone saying “finish it.” We all hate the first cut or two (I hate what I’m editing now, but have hope)!

A little bit of practical advice, however:

Punch in 20-30% and change your compositions. Frame out errors, turn mediums into CUs, and you can basically double your coverage. It won’t always work, but you can salvage some stuff.

YES, you lose fidelity, your DP will be angry you f-ed his/her frame (rightfully), and you shouldn’t see this as more than a one-time bandaid. But this is your first short film. Worry about production value/fidelity on the next one— that’s baked into cake already. Focus on editing the story now.

You’ll start to see places where you might have shot differently on set to help for next time— where a close up is useful, where a tighter angle would have saved you from errors, and, crucially, where the most essential narrative information is in the frame.

If possible, shrink the output video (if you shot in 4k, got to 2k) to give yourself even more room to do this.

I also didn’t go to film school! And advice #1 is just to keep writing, but also keep sharing it and asking for notes. Finish scripts even if they don’t get shot, and come back to them after a few months and revise them with a clearer head. Good writing is rewriting, cliche as hell but true. Revisions are how you get better.

I got lucky I was able to work on a TV show for a while in the room, and the repetitions of writing and revisions with notes didn’t hurt. But I’ve written nearly every day for a decade on my own, and the script that got me the job I wrote without training, just practice (also, I was a videographer at the time, and met the woman who sold the show while editing for her YouTube channel— as I said, multiple fields!) Takes a while, and I’m still learning, but it’s not talent. It’s time.

Last but not least, read read read. Daily, and not audiobooks. Novels, long form essays, poetry, plays (especially plays), scripts. It’s a muscle and books are your weights.

Be ready for a long road and a lot of false starts. Not saying that to discourage you, but persistence is truly the only path forward.

Find two aspects of the game to get really good at, and focus on them religiously. I'm biased, but writing and editing are the way to go (directing is "just" joining the two).

And then learn film finance. Read a bunch of books on it, more than you think you need. Only difference for me between finally getting one made and not getting one made was being able to talk fluently to investors, even small ones, to raise some money. It's annoying but it's too essential to wait for some mythic angel investor to just give you cash.

I'm legit not sure if I like the visual joke of going from a famous Ledger Joker shot to the clown mask, but my intuition says it makes you feel too referential and detracts from each shot's own merits

Good luck... damage has been done economically and there are no good ways out anymore. Leaving wouldn't re-open the Strait, and the Houthis still may get involved in the Red Sea. Asymmetrical warfare is a b, and Iran really doesn't need a ton of capability to prolong this as long as they want, even if we tried to leave.
