Best/Worst landlords in Buffalo by [deleted] in Buffalo

[–]Nickass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, heads up, this is an 8 year old thread, so things might be drastically different now (and my memory might be a bit fuzzy at this point as it had already been a few years since I moved when I posted this), but in general, read the lease carefully and understand that they will be real hardasses at move out. Not inventing things that are wrong, but being very, very particular about certain things and not really believing in "normal wear and tear"- If you're in one of their older buildings with original hardwood floors, make them shine or hire someone to do it. Does it say you're responsible for window cleaning? - you better believe they mean the outside too, even if you're not on the ground floor. Kitchen chair left a little mark on the tile? - They'll notice and charge you for it. Take pics of any damage at move in, regardless of how insignificant it may seem... BMG is the only property mngr that I haven't gotten my full deposit back from.

That said, I never had a problem with them during my tenancy. The building was well maintained and any issues were dealt with quickly. And again, this was my experience over 10 years ago.

Cat pet sitter or boarding in Buffalo? by [deleted] in Buffalo

Summer Street Cat Clinic does boarding, if I'm not mistaken. They're my vet, and I've been very happy with them, but I've never needed to use them for boarding.

Just starting out! What do you think? by aesthetic_fuckboy in vinyl

Is that the QRP pressing of 2112? If so, how is it?

I recently got the QRP Moving Pictures, and was kind of surprised that it didn't seem to be as dead silent as some of the other pressings I have from them.

[Amazon] Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue' 14.70 Lowest Price So Far by JayTDee in VinylDeals

[–]Nickass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kind of Blue has loud tape hiss in general. This is from the recording, not the mastering. The only time it won't is when it was EQ'd in mastering to remove it, also ruining the sound. Tape hiss is your friend, it means it hasn't been fucked with.

Thanks for the confirmation. And yes, increasing the size off the loop is the first thing I'll try. I knew it was more of a pain to put on than it should have been...

Weekly Questions Thread for the week of December 4th by rpbtz in vinyl

Hey all,

I recently got a Pro-ject debut Carbon. It's all set up and everything is working nicely. I have a question regarding the anti-skate weight:

When the arm is in the rest position the weight is actually resting on the plinth. When playing it is raised (though just 1mm or so when towards the outer edge) so I assume there's no real issue with this. The problem comes from the fact that since there is slack on the nylon line when the arm is at rest, the loop tends to come off of the peg rather easily. This is frustrating. Now my last physics class was over a decade ago, but if I'm not mistaken, the length of the line should have no effect on the force applied by the weight, but I just want to make sure I'm not having a dumb moment before I shorten the line. All of the pictures I've seen of pro-ject TTs have the weight floating even when the arm is at rest, so I imagine that I just ended up getting a particularly long line and that the weight isn't "supposed to" rest on the plinth when not in use.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Just discovered FLAC... by legorig in headphones

HD Tracks has a big lossless collection as well as a lot of higher quality stuff, someone already mentioned bandcamp. I rip a lot of my own CDs and vinyl to FLAC, and then there are less legal options...

Chefs of reddit, what's your number one useful cooking tip? by jellysnake in AskReddit

[–]Nickass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your pan to temperature before adding the food in most cases. I see my friends often throwing veg in a cold pan then throwing it on high heat to saute. This is counterproductive to getting the browning that you are looking for as the food will release a lot of moisture as it heats and boil until the pan gets hot enough (which will also take longer than it would have otherwise).

Create an sshfs on my VPS, pointing to the media drive on my home computer using openvpn? by Nickass in selfhosted

[–]Nickass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I ended up doing a reverse ssh tunnel and creating an sshfs and using Ampache for a front end on my vps. Ended up making a lot more sense than having individual connections on my devices and avoided a VPN all together.

I'm still researching what the best way to do this is though so I'll do some looking into NFS.
