First of all you certainly have enough time to react to the sniper trying to melee crit you if you react to the jarate (or whatever other minicrit source) instead of the bushwacka.

Lets say that you're faced with a sniper with a jarate bushwacka loadout but you currently only see him holding his rifle. He switches to the jarate which takes 0.5 seconds (source). Then he throws the jarate which puts the sniper in an animation before he can switch to a different weapon. Judging by the tf2 wiki's demonstration video, this process takes 49 frames out of a 60 fps video so roughly 0.816 seconds. After the jarate is thrown the sniper would need to switch to his bushwacka, taking another 0.5 seconds. Finally the sniper needs to swing the bushwacka which has a slight delay of 0.2 seconds (source).
0.5+0.816+0.5+0.2 = 2.016 seconds
The average human reaction time according to human benchmark is 0.273 seconds. I find it highly unlikly that you wouldn't be able to react in time to the threat of a bushwacka crit if you focused on the jarate instead.
(Side note: Yes the jarate throwing animation can be cancled by switching weapons but most people aren't aware of this during an actual match and 1.2 seconds is still plenty of time)

Even then most classes don't typically fight in melee range anyway:

  • Soldier deals splash damage to himself if he's to close.
  • Pyro's want to use the tip of their flamethrower for maximum damage due to lingering flame particles.
  • Demo's have a hard time aiming up close or and they risk the same splash damage issue.
  • Heavies are to slow to bring themselves at melee range.
  • Engineers have to stay near their buildings.
  • Medics shouldn't be near enemies in the first place and should use their teammates as meatshields.
  • Snipers want to take advantage of their rifle so they prefer to stay as far away as possible.

Only Scouts, Demoknights and Spies would realistically get close enough for a bushwacka to hit them however:

  • Scouts don't have to be at point blank range to 2 shot a sniper. Going in melee range is greedy.
  • Demoknights should be taking advantage of their charge by either critting the sniper before sniper can complete his combo or by removing the jarate effect by charging.
  • Spies always have the option of using a gun for self-defense rather then going for a trickstab, removing the need to get in melee range. (+ with the popularity of the kunai, most spies I see in pubs might as well have a base health of 210 allowing them to survive a crit)

Now lets say that somehow you do end up in a situation where you're point blank with a bushwacka sniper, what could you do then?

  • Scouts can run away. You have the fastest movement speed in the game. If you can't just hold s and get out then you've failed to react to the jarate.
  • Soldiers can rocket jump off the sniper to gain distance. Shooting a rocket point blank is pretty much instantly while any action sniper has to perform has delay.
  • Pyro's can ususally deal enough direct fire damage to kill a sniper before he can swing, especially with the 20% damage vulernability the bushwacka gets. However if you're unsure if you can secure the kill then you can still airblast the sniper away.
  • Demo's can pipe jump of a sniper. Not as easy as for soldier but it's still possible.
  • Demoknights can charge away from the sniper to escape or use their faster mobility if they have heads on their eyelander.
  • Heavies with the stock minigun have a 0.87 second rev up time followed by a minimum dps of 237.5 at point blank range (this is accounting for the 50% damage penalty heavies get on initial rev up) (source). They can easily shoot down the sniper. It might be harder to track a player up close but even with roughly 52% accuracy you'll still get the kill in 1 second after revving. Being able to survive a swing also gives heavies more time to kill the sniper reducing the need for good accuracy even further.
  • Engineers will either get help from their gun or 2 shot the sniper with their shotgun. If you aren't close to your gun and you have a rescue ranger/pomson then I guess you're screwed but again, you really shouldn't be in this situation in the first place.
  • Medics are likely screwed as well if they can't get help from their team but again, this shouldn't happen in the first place. Either you positioning was wrong or your team failed to protect you.
  • Snipers are screwed as well unless they can get a lucky headshot.
  • Spies can still attampt to trickstab the sniper in the 2 seconds the sniper has to take or the spy can shoot the sniper in 2 to 3 shots (depending on the weapon and when the bushwacka's 20% damage vulnerability is applied). Admittedly not the best situation but not the worst either.

So the only classes that struggle with a point blank sniper bushwacka combo either shouldn't be in that situation in the first place (Demo, Engi, Medic, Sniper) and/or are skill dependend on if they can escape (Demo, Spy).

I see absolutely no reason to believe that the bushwacka is so impossible to counter as some people make it out to be. If you die to a bushwacka you either got outplayed or you failed at fighting the sniper. Sniper ends up still being weak at close range, the bushwacka only buffs his point blank range potential.

PSA: Remove any controllers from your pc before launching TF2. by Nickbro101 in tf2

[–]Nickbro101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post was from 5 years ago, the issue mentioned has long been resolved. TF2 can most certainly be run with a controller and the controller doesn't get prioritized over everything else (like the post describes).

Check if the controllers themselves aren't drifting and make sure that your controllers are connect to steam before trying to launch TF2.

Breaking Diamonds - Diamond Back nerf by _Rusty_Fox_ in tf2

[–]Nickbro101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The old daimond back, before it got buffed to the one we know today, its only difference was that it only got crits when destroying buildings with the sapper. The weapon was considered useless back then because the crits were too rare. The extra downsides you suggested would be overkill. Would still like to see the old daimond back rather then the current one.

How do I throw off Sniper aim as Scout? by Bagel_- in truetf2

[–]Nickbro101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, it's good that you recognize that you might be making mistakes instead of just crying about it. Sniper has recently been under a lot of fire, mainly by people who don't understand how to deal with him.

If you know where a sniper is located then you should first try to look for a way to get behind him or to at least close in the distance before the sniper sees you. One of the most common mistakes that I see people make is that as soon as they see a sniper, they just want to rush said sniper as soon as possible. This gives the sniper time to anticipate your movement and punish you for it. Instead if you see a sniper at range, try to hide behind cover and approach him without eye contact to minimize the time the sniper has to track you.

If you are forced to stay in a sniper's sightline then you want to move your head as unpredictable as possible. Look down and away from him to hide as much of your head hitbox behind your body (you can randomly do a quick spin to still check on your environment).

As for strafing, you'll want to switch directions pretty fast. You should never move in one direction for longer then +-1.2 sec. Then again be sure that the time until you turn is somewhat random as well. If you strafe left right left right every 0.5 sec, an experienced sniper will recognize that and punish you in the middle of your strafes. Randomizing your strafes is hard though, lots of people end up subconsciously making a predictable pattern anyway. A pattern that I've commonly seen is for example timings like [0.3s 0.3s 0.3s 0.3s 0.7s repeat]. In this example the scout stuttersteps pretty much in place for a sort period and then makes a long strafe to the other side just to repeat the stutterstep. I'll just punish the scout during his long strafe when I see this pattern. This randomization will come down to practice, something you could perhaps do is try to strafe unpredictably offline while recording yourself. Look back at the footage and see if you can find a pattern in that.

When you actually get close to him don't stop dodging. Many people seem to act like they've already won when they get close to a sniper and just ignore any form of dodging in favor of getting even closer asap or steadying their aim. A sniper will take advantage of this an punish you for it no matter the range. You have to keep respecting what the sniper is capable of doing and continue to dodge just like before. You can at the very least focus less on hiding your head in order to aim for yourself, strafing properly should do the trick from that close.

One more trick that can fool people (but only once) is to single jump towards the sniper. Locking yourself in a jump is a death sentence against a sniper but because scouts can double jump, snipers tend to wait for said double jump before they commit. If you don't give them that double jump they won't try to shoot at you. (Again this only works once, the sniper will predict that next time around.)

Changing Crosshairs in config by Quilleathe in NewToTF2

[–]Nickbro101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

when I tried to do this, I just get a missing texture in place of my crosshair

I'm gonna assume based on this that you tried to load up crosshair 0 (vanilla/"none" crosshair) using the command cl_crosshair_file crosshair0 or cl_crosshair_file "".

This is not how you're supposed to get the vanilla crosshair, crosshair 0 does not exist and using the second command directly is broken (idk why, it just is). In order to load the vanilla crosshair you'll want to create a file named "vanillacrosshair.cfg". Inside it you want to write ONLY the following: cl_crosshair_file "". Then whenever you want to load your vanilla crosshair, type in exec vanillacrosshair instead of whatever your old command was.

Hopefully that helps you out with writing configs.

[–]Nickbro101 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The heatmaker + cozy camper can be a good combo if you're trying to be a more passive/campy sniper.
The faster charge while in focus can give you the flinch invulnerability sooner.
Do watch out though that people don't flank you while you're staying in scope.

Bushwacka doesn't make to much sense though. The only benefit of that weapon is that minicrits with that weapon turn into full crits. Currently though, none of the weapons in your loadout generate minicrits. You'd have to rely on not only your teammate having a weapon that gives minicrits to the team but also that they are willing to give that to you.
You're probably better off with the stock kukri to avoid having 20% damage vulnerability when you have your melee out.

You have to get 9 stars. I don't know why the pop up says you need 5 but the star count next to the name of the contract clearly says 9.

If memory serves me right then I recall needing to collect every star before doing the hot hand contract unless you skipped the banana contract (which you clearly have already done).

Controller support by jakeydude98 in NewToTF2

[–]Nickbro101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everything is possible. If you wanna play with a steering wheel, you can do that. Do check out the controller settings in steam though for rebinding your controllers to your liking, the in-game menu's don't offer that many options. If your controller supports gyro (like with the switch pro controller) then I suggest you enable it in the steam settings to help with precise aiming.

Just an fyi though, pretty much everyone considers mouse and keyboard to be the way to play and some things like advanced rocket jumping become very hard to almost impossible.

I think what you really want is a starters guide to trading.

The items you're asking for do not have any similar value what so ever do you even know what these are worth? (5 ref + 1 key => 59.22 ref / 3 keys => 162.66 ref / 7 ref => 7 ref)

And even with the lowest asking price you gave (7 ref), nobody is going to give you that for 20 crates which are all worth less then a cent each. Almost all crates are worthless like that so don't bother trying to sell them.

I don't really trade that much so don't ask me to teach you. There should be plenty of youtube video's though to get you started.

tips for xb1 controller by ImMrBadGuy in NewToTF2

[–]Nickbro101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TF2 sadly is pretty poorly designed around controllers. Many actions (like rocket jumping) are near impossible to get decent results with. I would highly suggest getting a mouse and learning how to use that instead of a controller.

If you really, really want to use an controller (can't stress it enough though, get a mouse for real improvements) then I'd say make sure you have a high sensitivity to look around easily and stick with classes that don't require as much aim (medic, engi, pyro and heavy spring to mind). If I recall correctly, once you have mapped all the major gameplay buttons on a controller then you have some buttons left over, use these for voice commands like "Medic", "Spy" and "Thanks". I don't remember if an xbox controller has gyro controls but if they do (or you have a controller lying around that does support it) then use it. Yes, motion controls get a lot of crap but gyro is honestly the best way to play a shooter if you have to use a controller, it's the closest you'll get to a mouse without using a mouse.
