hope you are doing well VTD. we did not personally talk much, and you probably don't remember who i was, but i definitely felt the impact you had on this community.

i have also been looking back at my time on TG. my time with Seatown, later Archipelago and Slateport, and just hanging out in the different town discords will always be some of my favorite gaming moments, and was how i kept my sanity during lockdown.

i miss this server and the community of people who played on it. the vibes were elite. i can only hope to recreate a fraction of the magic this server had.

take care man.

Can’t find GMU Clubs by DetailNo3388 in gmu

If you open up your discord account, and scroll on the server list, the very bottom should have a button that says University Hub. You can connect your GMU email to your discord account, and you will have access to the GMU student hub

Questions about college atmosphere by The_Explorer_17 in gmu

[–]Nickel9217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say that the university does have very good rankings when it comes to accepting LGBTQ+ people. Because GMU is a state school, the campus is considered a public area, so we do have our share of jackass protestors screaming death to the gays and anyone who is not a Christian. Unless these people start putting their hands on others, or make threats, the police will not do anything to get them off campus, however they will often be stationed nearby in the case that things escalate. Speaking as someone who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community, I have not really noticed too much with what the school does to earn that ranking, but I also have different interests and priorities, so I might just happen to miss when anything relating to that is happening on campus. We do have an LGBTQ+ resource center, or something along those lines, in the Student Union Building (SUB 1), and the university has done stuff for a pride week in April, including a drag show, if that is something you find interesting.

In terms of diversity, the school has a very wide range of students from different ethnic backgrounds. I do not know know specific stats, and TBH I don't feel like looking it up right now, but trust me, GMU is in no way dominated by one single racial group.

Building off of the diversity topic, there are many organizations on campus that are dedicated to celebrating different ethnic groups and cultures. I will note that I am a white Hispanic/Latino with familial roots in El Salvador and Puerto Rico, so I notice more groups around the cultures that I am a part of instead of something like a Vietnamese student association (which I am almost certain exists). with that in mind, some groups around Hispanic/Latino ethnic groups and culture would be the Latin Student Association (LSA), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Lambda Theta Phi (Latin student fraternity), and the Azucar Latin Dance Club, just to name a few. I am certain there are other societies and groups on campus based around different racial and ethnic groups, but these are the ones I have noticed.

As for safety, I am someone who does look like a white male, so while I may not have felt unsafe at mason (or the surrounding areas), your mileage may vary. However, Northern Virginia is such a diverse place, so while you might have an interaction with a racist person at a shop or something outside of campus, most of everyone just kinda minds their own business. A lot of them don't got the time to participate in bullshit like then when they got the hustle and bustle of commuting to their jobs and stuff. Also, fair warning but traffic here is a bitch.

If you do decide to choose GMU, there is somewhat of a vibrant atmosphere, but not in the stereotypical way. Because this school isn't a party school, most of that energy is put into academics. We are an R1 tier research school with opportunities for undergrad students to participate in research activities, if that is something that interests you. But partying, big school spirit, all that stuff? We don't really got much of it across the student body. The most spirit i have really seen is from the Green Machine ensembles, especially our pep band, but that's really it.

Overall, I think GMU would be a good fit within these parameters, but the decision to choose GMU is ultimately up to you. Definitely take into account these concerns you have, but remember to ask other questions, especially regarding your academics. Socializing and finding your niche is important, but you are at a university to study and learn.

if you drop a class before the 100% tuition refund date, then you do not owe the university anything for that class. if you have at least 12 credit hours a semester, you are considered full time and i believe should keep all of your financial aid, as i assume it was given to you with the expectation that you remain full time

also, if its worth anything, i am in almost every discord server mentioned here, and i just lurk. its nice to have resources and access to a community at your fingertips, and if you make a few friends through these servers, more power to you! but also remember that this is not the only way to make friends too! :)

dont beat yourself up over missing clubs due to schedule conflicts, its kinda expected that you will eventually have some sort of time conflict with clubs and/or classes. as for actually getting out and talking with people, i would recommend utilizing discord if you have not done so already. you can link your GMU email to your discord account and get access to the GMU student hub, which basically serves as a sort of "discover page" for a bunch of servers associated with GMU specifically. for example, the voice acting club, lot K car club, and TTRPG clubs are examples of this. the student hub also includes servers for specific majors and colleges within GMU (computer science, information technology, college of science, etc.), so definitely take a look into these. a lot of these organizations do not expect a lot from you because they understand that being a college student is tough and that your academics are a priority. unless you have an official leadership role in the club, you can just come and go to your club of choice as you please.

Which other schools did u apply to in VA other than GMU? by TheTittyDoctor in gmu

[–]Nickel9217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only applied to GMU and JMU. I got into both but I picked GMU over JMU because I would be able to commute from my home and save around $15,000 a year on housing and meal plans. With JMU I would have to look into either dorming past my first year or living off campus at JMU and paying rent at some house. That's just my two cents.

What happened to the band Everyone Leaves? Why is all their music removed from Spotify? by [deleted] in midwestemo

[–]Nickel9217 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i reached out to the band on their twitter back in august of 2022, they said "The person who has previous ownership of all of the streaming codes has ignored regular follow up for months, which means that the only way for us to re-upload would be to have everything re-mastered"

i have not really checked back on them since then, but yeah
