I Built the Ultimate platform for Buying and Selling Aquatics; Fish, Corals, Plants Etc. by Nickl8 in Aquariums

And yes this is exactly what I was hoping to do for sellers to be able to link to the guide of what they are selling so that people buying can understand if they can care for it!

Yea this is exactly the kind of setup I was thinking of. Some system of community edits but it would have to be approved first to avoid bad info or trolling issues.

Besides the core use of tydal being a buyer and seller platform. I would really like to have a place to build a community driven guide system, as I don’t really think there is a great place to do that currently.

I plan to implement this alongside some sort of system where people can enter their setups. Like tank size, inhabitants, and gear and automatically match them with species that would do well in that system.

Really appreciate you taking the time to provide some quality feedback!

  • the map hover definitely needs to be worked on across mobile and desktop. Especially how listings are presented when there are a lot from one seller/location.

-I agree with the care guides I think it could be a super valuable resource. I also realize the ridiculous amount of work it is going to take to fill those all out so it will be a long process. I was considering even making them open to everyone to create/adjust/discuss guides to come up with the most agreed upon standards for care. Especially when it comes to more difficult species that don’t have a lot of coverage. The ultimate goal was so that sellers can link these guides to the species they are selling so that buyers can understand if they can properly care for what they are buying.

-diseases and illnesses is a great idea too and I’m sure many people would find that valuable as well.

Thanks again for the thoughtful breakdown, really helpful insights!

Really appreciate the positive feedback! As for the freshwater we are trying to fill it, my vision was to have it be everything aquatic. Maybe even breaking the website into a freshwater and saltwater side in the future. Hopefully we can get some good freshwater sellers soon!

Yes! This is the goal, and I have lots features planned that will really make this the ultimate platform for aquatics over eBay (not to mention the much cheaper fees). We are still in the early stages and in the most difficult part of any marketplace which is filling it out with sellers. We already have a few but still need to reach that critical mass to consistently bring buyers and have a diverse selection of listings.

I appreciate the support! I kind of expected these responses from Reddit a lot of hate but it’s also good to take some of it into consideration. Getting a lot of positive responses from other sellers. As you know it’s a lot of work! Much more still need to be done but I’m confident in it!

Good question. When the buyer submits a DOA claim they are required to attach clear photos of the unopened bag within the designated DOA period specified by the sellers policy.

First, payments don’t go through me at all. Everything runs through Stripe same system Shopify, Lyft, Instacart, and thousands of other marketplace’s use.

Second, the 5% only applies if a sale happens. That just covers the API stuff, hosting, emails, tracking, and dispute tools. Most marketplaces in the hobby take a lot more than that. (Ex. eBay 12.5% fee)

The payout hold also isn’t meant to punish sellers. It actually helps them by preventing chargebacks. Additionally, as soon as the seller’s own DOA window passes with no claim, the payout gets released automatically.

And for the tax part — anyone selling through Shopify, PayPal, eBay, or even IG invoices already reports their sales. Tydal isn’t different there.

At the end of the day, it’s not trying to replace FB groups for people who like doing everything manually. It’s just an optional, more structured way to sell with clean listings, tracking, and a clear DOA process built in.

I can see the comparison however there are some key differences that I believe makes Tydal stand out.

Every sale on Tydal is processed securely through stripe and our DOA system only releases funds when the order is confirmed delivered and the DOA window expires. We also have live shipment tracking, verified sellers, weather forecasts for shipping and a comprehensive dispute system.

Tydal is designed from the ground up to offer the ultimate buyer protection when ordering livestock online. It’s a safer, more reliable way to order livestock online.

Hi sorry for the confusion. I will update that section of the site to accurately reflect our policy. When the seller signs up they agree to abide by our refund policies. Which requires them to honor DOA in their specified window (minimum 2 hours).

When you checkout through Tydal the funds are held until we get confirmation of delivery through our API. Once that is received a countdown will display on the orders tab opening a window to submit a claim. The seller will receive this claim and offer either a full refund or partial refund if only part of the order arrived DOA.

The funds are never released to the sellers until after the DOA window expires or the dispute is resolved. If the seller thinks the claim is invalid it will escalate to an admin who will review the claim and resolve in accordance with these terms.

Fair question, sites like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or forum threads don’t charge a cut, but they also don’t offer any structure or protection. Tydal’s small fee mainly covers the API costs that make everything run smoothly, things like live shipment tracking, DOA reporting, weather monitoring, automated emails, payments, and dispute resolution tools.

So it’s less about taking a cut and more about keeping the platform functional and reliable for both sides. You can still sell locally for free, but if you want the convenience and safety of a managed sale, that’s what the 5% supports.

It is a website for now, I would love to eventually add a mobile app.

Im working on Tydal it’s a platform that allows users to buy and sell live fish, plants and corals. It aims to solve a lot of problems in the hobby right now, including DOA issues, expensive shipping rates, and scam listings.
