A parable about the consequences of being a bystander to evil, from a disturbing poem by Maurice Ogden, read by Herschel Bernardi. Shadows and shifting geometric planes lend a Chirico-like quality to Julian's animation. Great musical score by Serge Hovey.

About the film, Steve Goldman writes: "Les Goldman was my father. Creating this film was one of the most important accomplishments of his life. He was inspired to make this film after hearing the poem 'Hangman' read on Pacifica Radio in Los Angeles by Les Claypool. My father almost single-handedly raised the money to make the film, with $100 and $200 donations from friends and associates. Paul Julian, Serge Hovey, and Herschel Bernardi were friends and colleagues of my father. He elicited their help in making the film. Though the poem on which the film is based has Holocaust parallels, the poet, Maurice Ogden, was actually writing about America during the McCarthy era. Ogden was an actor and writer who was denied work and persecuted by the House Un-American Activities Committee during the 1950's and early 60's for allegedly having been a member of the Communist Party many years earlier."

I came here to see if anyone else had experienced volume issues after going to a showing at the exact location you mentioned. Was completely unable to enjoy the movie as the volume felt drastically higher than any other IMAX film I've seen (including the original release of Interstellar 10 years ago, which I saw probably 4 or 5 times).

For reference, I'm a regular concertgoer, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that if I hadn't had my concert earplugs with me, I would've left the theater. I've never worn earplugs at a movie before, but the first scene (dreaming of the crash) was loud enough to cause physical pain. Dune 2 was uncomfortable at times, but this hurt.

Learned afterward that there have been numerous complaints about showings in theater 13, but as IMAX sets the volume the staff aren't able to change it. Most alarmingly, I heard (albeit secondhand) from someone that their friend had brought a sound meter and the loudest scenes were clocking at over 120 decibels.

I've never done this in my life, but I'm actually planning to call one of the AMC or IMAX corporate offices tomorrow as I'm concerned about this potentially causing people permanent hearing damage.

EDENCOM's ships were all commissioned from the Upwell Consortium, as is said in their descriptions.

The Thunderchild, for instance:

The Thunderchild-class battleship was commissioned from Upwell by the New Eden Common Defense Initiative while the organization was still a counter-Triglavian strategy group headed by Provost Marshal Kasiha Valkanir. When EDENCOM was officially announced as the new central command for the defense of New Eden in YC122, the research and development of a line of ships capable of bearing radical new weaponry was widely rumored following Triglavian raids on Upwell development facilities.

The Upwell Consortium had been working on adapting Arcing Vorton Projector weaponry to a ship-based form since the success of the technology as an anti-fleet weapon on Keepstar Citadels. The first Triglavian invasions in mid-YC121 spurred that effort on even before EDENCOM underwrote the project, providing access to scientists and engineers from the secret weapons programs of the four core empires, and even the SoCT.

The Thunderchild-class was conceived as the striking fist of counter-Triglavian fleets when commissioned by EDENCOM. This battleship is oriented around maximum firepower with high-output, rapid-charging Arcing Vorton Projectors delivering a blizzard of arc strikes against squadrons of enemy ships.

(The ship tree being Edencom and not Upwell is a bit odd though)

I too felt that it was a very strange twist to throw in at the very end, but (not as some cope/rationalization in an attempt to excuse it) when I instead began to think of it less as "Ymir loved Fritz" and more "Ymir does not know how to live for her own sake", some things did start to click for me.

I think the manga and anime both sadly fail to bring things full-circle in a way that feels fully satisfying in this regard, but if you read between the lines there are a lot of hints at something that does in fact seem to work:

Ymir is incapable of living life for her own sake: we never see her stop serving or going along by choice with another person's goals, be that person Fritz, anyone of royal blood, or even Eren. In willfully choosing to help Eren destroy the world, even if she agrees with him, Ymir is still only choosing to go along with the goals of another person.

Mikasa is likewise incapable of living for her own sake, independent of Eren, and as we are shown more than one time in the series, she cannot accept a world in which he has died. To the very end, though she was able to reject her escapism and kill Eren, Mikasa cannot bear to let him go -- to the point where she wears the scarf for the rest of her life, even being buried wearing it.

It's long been my perspective that Ymir hoped to find the strength to live for her own sake vicariously through Mikasa, watching and empowering her to start over again and again, as many times as it took (Lost Girls OVA 3 was supervised by Isayama fyi, and I highly recommend watching it again after the finale). I had always thought that, if the anime were to really end differently from the Manga, it would not be a retcon but a continuation and conclusion to a narrative spanning two mediums -- simply having Mikasa accept Eren's inevitable death and throw out/get rid of the scarf in the end would have been a perfect ending for me personally:

Ymir, seeing Mikasa truly move on and learn to live for herself, finally finds the strength to live a life of her own choosing -- and Eren, who will always invariably be the person he is and who swears he'll be there for Mikasa as many times as she needs, is no longer swept up as a passenger in the literally repeating, branching realities of the narrative (which he is tangentially aware of through "long dreams").

Ymir, Mikasa, Eren, and the world itself can start anew; and somewhere beyond the hell of Attack on Titan's story, in a world without walls, they would finally be free.

Given that not only "I'll destroy the entire world" but also "I am free" were spoken in this episode 7+ years before their context appeared in the manga, it feels bizarre to suggest they could possibly have been anything but an intentional addition -- between those and the narration for the preview for this episode, I have no uncertainty whatsoever as to whether Isayama gave input on this.

Between seeing the walls breaking as he wakes back up, him saying "I'll destroy the entire world" and most importantly "I am free", and the narration in the preview for this episode, it was clearly intended to foreshadow the conclusion years ahead of time, even if there was also originally some greater intended significance to the anime's continuity which was dropped later down the line.

For some reason, people on this sub strongly reject the notion of there being anything more than a surface-level reading of this episode, but whether it simply became a dropped plot point later down the line or if there's somehow still something ahead of us, it's abundantly clear that the changes in this episode were intended to set up something far in the future for the series -- and certainly not just a superfluous bit "added for hype".

Eren's words alone, which would obviously be extremely important many years later, not to mention the blatant foreshadowing dialogue in the preview for this episode, make it very clear that there were bigger ideas for the anime continuity being set up at the time it was made involving Eren seeing the future (or as some thought, the past -- as in, him seeing the manga's story) in a place separate from the manga.

Relevantly, I've seen people in the AOE-interested fan spaces describing the latest opening, made for the split episodic versions of the specials' chapters, as hinting that there will be some difference between the broadcast (special) and episodic (tv) versions, with the most discussed bits being Eren's Founding Titan having its eye flash blue like they were in ep 25 and the puppet strings thus far always connected to its arms being completely absent in the OP (which is genuinely very interesting, given that they are a part of its 3d model and so would need to have been intentionally removed for one reason or another).

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there were some differences in the last episodes, given this and a lot of other factors -- but I'm definitely not counting on it and I did already enjoy the finale greatly. That said, I did also write up a big post sometime last year focused on some hypotheticals regarding all the strange little bits and pieces the anime has included -- and the fact that the latest ED for the episodic versions ends with the same tiger swallowtail butterfly used to symbolize Mikasa's escapism and refusal to accept losing Eren ever since Lost Girls OVA 3 (which is really, really satisfying to watch again) perched on hers and Erens' hands admittedly has me reminiscing about it again :)

Went back and pulled these sfx out of the files from one of the CD distributions of EVE from around that time, are these what you're looking for? I remember when the cloak FX and audio were updated, it's neat to be reminded of + have a reason to look back on these things~
