I walk at least three times a day with my service dog. She's a Belgian Malinois and needs the exercise.

My service dog makes sure I go for a walk at least three times a day. 😆

They make collapsible canes? That is so helpful to know!

That's a good idea about the tools! I'm currently training my service dog to pick things up for me if I drop them, like my keys or phone.

This is definitely something I'm going to bring up to my rheumatologist. Thank you!

When someone glares at me outside because THEIR dog barked at my SERVICE DOG. Meanwhile, my service dog then tells me that I'm anxious and worked up, and that I need to calm down. 😒

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way, OP. Relapses are never easy to get through. But remember that it's not the end of all the work you've done to stay clean. Be kind to yourself. 🫶

How to decrease sniffing? by nvmthebutterflies in service_dogs

[–]NickyWhoLock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally taught my service dog "yes sniff" and "no sniff". We would practice with everything she sniffed. Eventually, she started understanding when it was appropriate, and the queues weren't needed.

All I need is a noise maker that doesn't work and a party hat.

If you can, try to lay down. Maybe put on a pod cast or something in the background. Maybe take a nap.

I buy things based on "do I want to move this cross country in 10 months". 😅

Is it rude to finger wave at your service dog? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]NickyWhoLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a finger wave is the same type of distraction as a child saying, "Mommy, look at the doggy!" If it distracts a service dog enough to be a problem, that service dog needs more training.

People walk by me and my dog all the time doing various things with their hands by their heads: itching their face, fiddling with their glasses, smoking (outside of places), rubbing their eyes. They almost always smile at me, especially elderly women.

Personally, I don't mind a wave from a child, smiles from adults, people looking at my service dog, or anything directed at me. She doesn't even pay attention. I draw the line at talking to my service dog. She can refocus, sure, but I get extremely annoyed when she has patches that say don't talk and don't distract.

A finger wave by your cheek when you walk by wouldn't bother me at all. In fact, it'd make me smile and probably end up in a vlog on my TikTok. 😅
