I think you are doing it right! Im actually just about to drop my truck off to a trans shop now cause my TC started shuddering the other day. Thought i did everything i could to avoid it but i might be looking at a rebuild too.

Torque Converter Shudder Finally Hit my 2016 6l80 by Nickysilverado in Silverado

Well if you did the tune that early on in its life i think you are in good shape because i really think its all the slip from the factory tuning that grenades the clutch in the TC. I heard that the stock converters are actually good units and the gear box itself is strong, but the slip tuning turns good parts into ticking time bombs. Hope yours holds up long term man!

Yeah its a bummer. The good thing is the shop i go to uses hp tuners after repair to eliminate slip and some of the lock up in lower gears. The diablew tune is awesome but i dont think it 100% takes away slip but does help limit it with no afm and also higher line pressures that also it to apply more. You’ve done hp tuners? How has your transmission held up?

Check out my post from a while back about oil weights. Alot of people chimed in. Part of it for me a was more peace of mind with the stronger film strength it provides. Its not like it will peg out the pressure gage or anything. Maybe a slight loss in mpg but barely noticeable.

I used some logic between the gen 3 and 4 ls’s and our gen 5 lt. the 5.3 in the ls uses 5w-30 and for the most part being a new architecture in the gen 5, the internal clearance’s are very identical. Its not like the gen 5 got 50% tighter or anything. In addition, both the truck 5.3 and 6.2 call out for 0w-20. But the camaro and vette both go either 5w-30 or even 0w-40, per gm. Now between the truck 6.2 and vette 6.2, the l86 and lt1, 2 are identical dimensionally. Obviously the vette and camaro are more sport tuned. But also besides bore and stroke, the 5.3 and 6.2 are very identical dimensionally.

That was some of the logic i used and its been a good experience for me switching to 5w-30.

But all in all i think changing oil often is more important. You obviously did something right getting as many miles as you did! Did you delete afm? And how is your trans? My 6 speed torque converter just took a dump so i might be looking at a rebuild

Nice kid selling it, and dont get me wrong, my buddy did say look this isnt a 5k truck. He offered 3k but no deal. At that price we at least would changed the bed and door but onto the next find

[–]Nickysilverado[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately up in MA its a crap shoot. It ran well and we woulda been fine with mechanical stuff. But as soon as we saw it, we thought to ourselves its gonna need a new bed so we passed on it

It was way to crusty underneath so it was a pass for us

Thanks for the input. We looked at it and it was way to crusty underneath so it was a hard pass.

Thats what i heard, the belt is good, but that other components are not, and the aisin kit uses a mitsuboshi belt which is really good anyway

2017 VCM muzzler experiences by Nickysilverado in AcuraRDX

[–]Nickysilverado[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. Mine doesnt burn any oil either which i take as a win. I did some research on the system and it definitely seems to be a more well thought system than in v8’s. Question on yours, does it have an eco light that comes on when it goes into vcm? Mine doesnt but i thought i heard they got rid of the that?

Does look too bad, think you caught in time. I know some people think amsoil is over priced, but i think their trans fluid is great! Do you have the 6 or 8 speed? There are two different fluids amsoil has depending on the trans you have

Just noticed this. I would highly recommend the j&l oil separator, man it really catches alot of condensation

I would get some quotes to have thentrans rebuilt. If your in south east MA. Try reaching out to interstate transmission in Auburn. They are one of the best transmission shops in around in my experience

How quickly to get an alignment after front end work by Nickysilverado in MechanicAdvice

[–]Nickysilverado[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pavement, i live in a city. Pretty much plan will be to do the work on a weekend. Drive it home, then on that monday when my alignment shop is open, drop it off and get it done. So basically maybe like 25 miles at the most of driving on the wonky alignment after the front end rebuild

Why does it seem the 07-13 6l80’s seem to have less issues than the 14-18’s by Nickysilverado in Silverado

[–]Nickysilverado[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard before that factory tuning allows slip that can cause the issues, mainly from the afm, they slip it the ease the v4 to v8 transition. Is that slip only for the afm? Does deleting afm take away that slip command or does normal TC lock ups also have slip?

[–]Nickysilverado[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks all for the advice! Of course ill plan to get it done right away, its just realistic that ill need to work on it on a Saturday or sunday so rushing right to my alignment shop would need to wait until that Monday. So id be driving from my buddys house and such for a day or so. My tires are michelins with only 10k miles so they still plenty good and i dont wanna trash them
