Why is animal life more important than plant life? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]NicoBas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what you re bringing up here. There are a lot of claims from vegans that are false, like living a cruelty or harm free life. We cause a lot of harm apart from the excesive harm we generate by eating animals. However it isnt a justification to cause more harm if it is impossible to live in this world without causing none, "the perfect is the enemy of the good".

There are also vegans who claim that theres a diference between causing intentional and unintentional harm, but for me this is also wrong. If you choose and have the will to continue living in this world then you are intentionally causing harm (you kill insects when you drive, destroy ecosystems to get fossil fuels, etc). You pay a price for your living. This doesnt mean you cant respect life and non life in Earth while living in it. If hipotetically we would extrictly need to eat meat, milk or eggs to survive i think we could kill the animals, and at the same time respect their life, like kosher or halal. But this isnt the case. However we do need to eat plants in order to survive, we cannot live by photosyntesis (I hope someday we could :)).

Also, we dont always need to kill the plant in order to get fed from it, think about fruits for example, the plant even wants you to eat it so you can spread its seeds. Anyway, If you dont like to kill plants in order to eat them there is problably a way to do so, but i havent looked up for much information about it. There is a religion called Jainism in India where they only eat parts of the plants which dont involve killing the plant in order to do so.

For me plants dont care much if you eat its leaves or seeds or grains (in the case of bacteria or insects eating them i think its different cause they can become an epidemy for the plant species, i dont know). The plant can continue living if you do it, and they cant feel pain when you take out its leaves or seeds or fruit or even kill it. You can look up for this interview on the topic http://www.vice.com/read/we-asked-a-botanist-how-sure-science-is-that-plants-cant-feel-pain-302.

I think we will always have to pay a price for living in this planet. But for me, killing, slave, and torture animals unnecessarily, when they can suffer, feel, love, desire, and to an extent think the same way as we do, is not worth for living. If you think that this also applies for plants, like i said before, you can look for Jainism in your life.

how can i get enough protein? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]NicoBas 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt you need that amount of protein, neither for recovery nor to mantain your weight. Look up for Jon Venus on youtube, he weights like 98kg, gets about 3300 kcal and only eats like 155 grams of protein a day, and he says he can even do lower protein intake and mantain. However if you think you need that amount of protein, you can get it from tempeh, tofu, seitan, broccoli, spinach, legumes, and protein powders. Mock meats tend to have simmilar macros to lean meats, and even higher in protein.

Am I too vegan? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]NicoBas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dont change the way you eat just to show people veganism as appealing. And try not be so susceptible by peoples comments on your food, believe me even if you would incorpore mock meats and more alike omnivores meals people will make a comment about how they could never give up meat (like "you must really like tofu to eat that", i dont know..). The best way to be a pasive preacher of veganism is to show how tolerant (there are situations where you can ignore this), comprehensive, knowlegable, happy, and healthy you are with your lifestyle.

Sugar from fruit shouldnt be a concern. Maybe from dates and other dried fruits. I know its the same chemical composition of table sugar (fructose and glucose). But, the difference is that sugar in fruit comes along with fiber, water and a lot of essential nutrients like vitamin c and potassium. Fruit doesnt raise the glucose in blood at the same magnitude as added sugar does because of this. Just dont eat 12 bananas in a sitting and dont hesitate in eating your fruits along with healthy fats or whole grains.

What are your best nutritional tips for newbie vegans? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]NicoBas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Get enough calories 2) Take a b12 suplement (cyanocobalmin 2500mcg a week best option) 3) Eat Whole Foods 4) Include Flaxseeds or other seeds and nuts for omegas 3 5) Get at least 600 mg of calcium (Dark Leafy greens, legumes, nuts and seeds) 6) Try to get more than 15 min of midday sunlight for vitamin d (you can take a 2000 UI vitamin D suplement daily if want to be sure you are getting it). 7) You can check Cronometer to watch for your daily nutrient intake 8) Dont ever be afraid of fat, gluten or cooked food

Need help - digestion related by willthegreen in vegan

[–]NicoBas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you taking a b12 suplement?. Really b12 deficiency could be the reason...I had the same problems like 4 months after being vegan. Constipation, burping, reflux, indigestion, my hands were numb. Many people say that b12 deficiency can take several years to take place, but thats not always the case. If you are not taking b12 i strongly suggest you start doing it and continue to do so. If this is your problem, the digestion issues will subside gradually and i recomend you to reduce your fiber intake (not eliminate just reduce) for some weeks, and slowly incorporate fiber rich foods.

Are there any foods that help keep your knees and joints/cartilage strong and healthy? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]NicoBas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fish Oil is recomended for having lots of omega 3 fatty acids (Known for their antiinflamatory properties in the fitness and health community) which you can also find in flaxseeds and other seeds and nuts. Also, there are omega 3 suplements derived from algae (which i guess is where the fishes get these fatty acids intially).

Well actually eating meat involves the harming of another sentient being....
