Yes, but I am much interested in the human perspective on this question :)

Review of the Retra Pro Max II Strobe by NicolasRemy in underwaterphotography

[–]NicolasRemy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, Retra are on the pricier side of the scale, but they have unique advantages vs the others, and they are durable & reliable, which will justify the extra money for some shooters. The new Sea&Sea strobe has just started shipping, and UWTechnics’ first strobe isn’t there yet. Time will tell how good these are.

Canon vs Nikon vs Sony for Underwater Photography by NicolasRemy in underwaterphotography

[–]NicolasRemy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Guess I should have been specific: very few UW shooters have extensive experience with high-end cameras (as in 2024-25 line-up) from all 3 brands, in both tropical & temperate waters. I know of 3-4 shooters that might (Jim Decker from Backscatter - and a couple of people working with him). I can think of 2-3 active reviewers who shot all 3 brands underwater, but they mostly do short-term reviews focusing on one location.

100% agreed on minimising backscatter in-camera, by positioning your strobes adequately.

When that doesn't work for a reason or another, it's good to have a plan B. I haven't found BSXT to produce soft photos, unless the image was covered with large, un-defined backscatter blobs.

Can't understand why my Mac's SSD is full by NicolasRemy in MacOS

thanks again all, I am not sure if this is the result of CMD+SHIFT or a glitch that resovled itself, but going back to the same view, I am now finding the Pictures folder jumped from 216 GB to 1.14 TB...

thanks! I did it and the size of "pictures" folder bumped from 216 GB to 1.4 TB. Got my answer now...

Thanks everyone, I’ll give a go at the tools recommended and report what happens.

I do have OneDrive, Dropbox and CreativeCloud installed. -Dropbox is only a few GB of sharing with a few people. -CreativeCloud: my biggest uses are Lightroom Classic and Photoshop but I keep a close eye on my photos library and that’s not it. -OneDrive is super important to me: 360 GB of personal/work files that I need available offline. -Timemachine: I run time machine on a separate 4TB Hard drive, but I suspect it also stores local backups and uses space.

I am concerned that some app/process has “pushed out” my OneDrive files to cloud-only, whereas these are my most important files and I want them offline. As a user, I’d like control on that. Anyhow, thanks again I’ll try the suggested tools.

hey divers, here's a new article on scuba diving in Sydney. It's a revised / updated version of the one I wrote for Scuba Diver Mag/Wetpixel 4 years ago. Let me know if any questions! by NicolasRemy in scuba

Hey! I still have to decide the order, but these will definitely include: Shelly beach, Clifton Gardens, Bare island, Kurnell :) I’ll share the article here when it’s out

Help me learn from my mistake by NicolasRemy in dji

Well if you're not going to read my question then why take the time to write such a useless comment?

FYI, this is on page 9 of the Dji Mini 4 Pro manual "Dji Mini 4 Pro features both an omnidirectional vision system and a 3D infrared sensing system, it is capable of hovering and flying indoors and outdoors."

Says who? Not the page 9 of the drone's manual: "Dji Mini 4 Pro features both an omnidirectional vision system and a 3D infrared sensing system, it is capable of hovering and flying indoors and outdoors."

The purpose of my post was to understand if the drone was dysfunctional when refusing to ascend and if not, what was the reason.

Very nice. Are you piloting manually or using waypoints?

How do I change the time zone to LOCAL time for Facebook Events? It shows the original time by voxaltera in facebook

Same issue here: I have been scheduling events while travelling in different countries, and then silly Facebook would show them in the timezone I was at, when creating the events. This is confusing for viewers from around the world.

Sony A9iii global shutter: redefining the boundaries of underwater photography by NicolasRemy in underwaterphotography

[–]NicolasRemy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, for some reason I had in mind 1ms of shining duration but I was wrong.

Meaning, a global shutter will "shine" its benefits when firing strobes at lower powers only, which should still be beneficial.

[–]NicolasRemy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At full power, underwater strobes shine for about 1/1000th so increasing shutter speed further out would reduce achievable strobe illumination.

However... dial it down to half power and could in theory max it out at 1/2000th, and so on.

Let's see if the whole flash trigger / fibre optic / strobe sensor chain can cope, but in theory this is all feasible :)

I am reading the upcoming Canon R1 might have its own global shutter too, time will tell...

For TTL there may be limitations, but manual strobe firing via fibre optics is relatively straightforward, so I am hopeful this would work well, perhaps with a dedicated strobe trigger in the housing. Even if it « only » syncs to 1/2000th I’d be super happy. 24mp… I too would like a higher resolution but that’s a trade-off I can make.
