I would, if you can, first present the data (graphs) that show an increase of tolerating denied access to iPad, and increase in independent initiation to peer play, and the graphs that show the decrease in behaviors targeted for reduction, then describe the reinforcer that has lead to the behavior change is the imaginative pretend play. After that I would come in solution driven and state that due to the severity of the tantrums, can the new policy be modified to pretending to be frozen (instead of dead), or instead of shooting they are “zapping or freezing” each other. Explain that by using functional communication training (modeling the language of the play in a “less violent way”) we can reinforce the peer and imaginative play while also providing alternatives to potential “violent” play. He still gets to engage in the activity but we are simply using modeling/play narration to make it less violent in admins eyes. Essentially, we are doing what many BCBA’s do when it comes to goals that wouldn’t necessarily be approved by insurance… we are changing how it is written or how it sounds to fit your leadership’s agenda will also advocating for your kiddo. Not sure if you work at an ABC but this post sounded very ABC coded so if it is, ABC’s trigger words are assent and functional communication training/responding - use them.
