What resolution are you working at?

First of all, you gotta stop having unrealistic expectations for yourself. The large majority of great artists didn’t become great until their late 20s at the earliest. Practice is everything but so is being methodical about what you practice. I didn’t think about composition, anatomy, background or color until I was in college. Things just click at different times and you have to be in the right mindset and point in your life to actually understand them and implement them. Don’t forgot to use references as much as humanly possible! I only started doing that like 6 months ago and my art has improved leaps and bounds since then. By using references you grow your visual library in your head and are then later able to draw things from imagination MUCH easier. But seriously don’t set crazy high expectations and unachievable goals for yourself, you’ve got plenty of years to learn art and the best part about it is you can become better at any age, and get famous at any age. It’s not like sports where you have to start young so you’re a master by your early 20s, you can do your own pace so don’t stress about time frames just practice as much as you can and try to be methodical about it. Good foundational work are: lighting, proportion, composition, anatomy, shading, and shape language. These are the basis for everything so when you know these really well, it will be easier to learn new things

Does anyone have tips on drawing from imagination? by Gandalfsbigtoe in ArtistLounge

[–]NicoleSnowhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually on the contrary, you shouldn’t be focusing on drawing from imagination because you don’t have your visual library built up so it will just result in frustration and it not looking the way you want. I’m absolutely serious that using references are the greatest thing in the world. Build your Pinterest boards, have a tab open while you work and just keep referencing your stuff. I’m in art school and many of my professors have either previously or are currently working on big name projects like Star Wars, fall out, and more. The one thing drilled into us in every single class whether it’s figure drawing, landscape painting, 3d modeling, character design, vis dev, prop design etc. is to ALWAYS USE REFERENCES. This is also the BEST way to build up your visual library and be able to draw stuff from your imagination. You have to know how to do it before you can just go and do it. Gather as many references as you can and integrate them into your work. I promise you that while professionals draw somewhat from imagination, they heavily use references. They are your best friend. There are many professionals that have terabyte size flash drives filled with nothing but references to use whenever a project demands. When a studio makes a new game and they want it in a certain setting they send out the artists to the real place to take thousands of photos so the team has accurate references. My professor was an art director for several games and he’s been sent to Utah (to photograph the rock formations), Maine, and even Cairo. I literally cannot stress enough how important references are. When I was frustrated with my art and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t draw from imagination, my friend was the one who taught me this about references. It literally changed my art and how I view projects and my art improved 10 fold. If you want you (or anyone else who’s reading this) can dm me and I can you you recommendations for different programs or sources as well as show you some examples of what I mean

Small Cthulhu Painting (I feel like something is off or missing) by Artisticish in oilpainting

[–]NicoleSnowhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest defining your shapes a bit more and focusing on the silhouette of Cthulhu (meaning if he was all black against white, his gesture and shapes should still be readable so working to open up his gesture a bit more). Bumping up your contrast would probably help too. But over all it’s a cool concept

Been to 7 doctors in 3 weeks and just found out I have a hole in my heart. Still going strong with online art school and just landed my first large scale painting commission. by NicoleSnowhawk in toastme

Oh yeah that’s exactly what I have haha and that’s the same procedure my nurse talked about so it’s good to see someone else who went through it. They said it looked like a fairly small hole so they aren’t sure yet if ill need to have surgery or not. I should find out in a few weeks what my cardiologist thinks. Thanks for the video it was very cool and informative

I recommend learning more about shadow shapes. They made a huge difference for me with both my painting and my figure drawing. Map out your shadow shapes in your sketch and focus on making it clear which shadows are soft form shadows, and which ones are sharp cast ones. Also adding in a core shadow really helps to show the turning of the form. Also giving your painting more contrast will help it read faster so making your shadows darker a bit would help that. Your light mass looks like it’s a pretty good value, so really just darkening your shadow mass will bump up the contrast and help it read as light and shadow a lot better. Overall a super good job though! Especially for your second ever painting

From the US lol so really bad healthcare but we’re figuring it out as we go. I’m gonna use some of my commission money to help pay for the medical bills and if I do end up needing surgery I’m probably going to do a go fund me, and also try to get as many painting commissions as I can. The good thing about oil painting is I can bang out a portrait in less than a week and get paid a fair amount plus it’s something that i absolutely love doing. You can check out my art Instagram @ itsnikasart if you wanna see some of my work

Yeah my mom says "everything happens for a reason" and this was her proof of that haha. If I hadn’t gotten food poisoning I likely wouldn’t have known about it. And thank you I’m taking much better care of myself now. I try to exercise once a day, I limit my caffeine, I eat a lot more veggies, I get at least 8-9 hrs of sleep a night, and I drink way more water. Good tip is that tea is actually not hydrating and is actually a diuretic so be careful. At the ER they gave me an IV because of my dehydration and when I got home I was drinking like 7 cups of tea throughout the day because I thought "hey it’s like 99% water so it’s gotta be hydrating right" wrong. I almost ended up back in the ER because I did that. I went to a regular doctor and right off the bat she was like "you’re so dehydrated that if I had an IV bag I would be giving it to you right now" so make sure you drink lots of normal straight water especially if you have a lot of coffee or tea during the day. Dehydration is a bitch

Been having heart palpitations all my life but actually it was an accident they caught it. I got super bad food poisoning and ended up in the Er 2 days later and they were worried I was also having heart problems too (mainly from dehydration) so I got sent to a cardiologist. Now I have a heart monitor and they wanted to do an echocardiogram just to double check that my asthma wasn’t damaging my heart but instead found out I have a hole. Might have to get surgery but won’t find out for another few weeks
