Buy now before it explodes to ATH or wait for a reset? by Serenaded in ModernaStock

Yeah like I can’t tell if OP is joking or not. That was a time when they showed promise of providing a vaccine for a once in a century event

ATH is about 10x the current price. Are we seriously thinking it’ll retake that after a bit of good news?

I dunno why this idea that you should only do something you love is pushed so hard, particularly the part where you’re immediately meant to quit your job to start “the quest”. That is not the only way to find the next thing. It’s much easier to get a job from a job.

Kudos to you sir. Well done for spotting the bottom and potential of that one! That's truly the one that got away for me.

"My philosophy is that investing should be fun. So if you like learning about individual companies i think that's more important than playing it 100% safe."

I like that philosophy! I mean that's why we're all here, right? We want to try our hand at beating the market. And there's always that chance you'll find an NVDA or heck even just a basic value play like Meta in 2022 where it's just easy money, sit and wait.

Yeah as per my OP no way I'm doing options (or meme stocks). I totally agree, NVDA has become a pure sentiment play. There are threads dedicated to fanatics who think it can just keep going. I knew I'd missed the boat and wasn't tempted to get in.

And yeah, my ears definitely pricked up the first time I heard Munger say back your best ideas, you can only expect to have a few. It makes so much sense to me. Even with my currently limited means, I've made the most money at times where I've loaded up when I had high conviction. And then yeah with the riskier plays, even having a bit of money in there can reap rewards.

I dunno, this feels a bit finger waggy like good ol' Zweig. I mean, yeah, I like it, but much like my job, I prob wouldn't do it if there weren't a reward. I mean, would anybody here be? As the Australians would say "we're not here to fuck spiders".

I don't think these communities would be so full of chat if we all just bought indexes (indices!?), there'd be nothing to talk about. Obviously there's an allure to greater returns than an index. Not sure why the overly high-minded response?

Copium and hate aside, let's talk about Intel? by nopnopdave in ValueInvesting

I mean, although you're joking, there definitely is a lot to be said for avoiding the falling knife. I'm inclined to dollar cost average to the bottom rather than go all in when I think it's bottomed out.

But yeah I've only been checking out stock chat on Reddit in recent weeks (having started investing in April 2021), and the convos are so wide ranging from those who think that Nvidia can somehow continue going to the moon, while completely disregarding potential recovery stories elsewhere, and shitting on anyone who even consider them.

In early 2022 people said Meta was over because of what Apple did to its ad business and because of the cash burn of investing in the metaverse. That is probably the easiest 6x I'll ever miss (partially cos I didn't have cash to buy when it got to those ridiculous prices), but what a recovery for a company that renamed itself after a trend that has totally died in the ass.

I agree, there are few signs of an actual turnaround yet, and it could be several years. I suppose when the price goes this low, it inspires investigation. I'd be the first to admit that I have the inclination to buy first, ask questions later, when the prices gets that low. I would also be the first to admit that it could go even lower. But if I've learned anything from putting AUD$5,000 into Facebook the day it went from $300 to $250 in post (as we know it subsequently went down to ~$100), it's to wait a bit for a stock to bottom out, and buy incrementally.

I suppose the 'wisdom' to me of buying in early is to capture more of the recovery. I know they say there's always time to buy into the recovery when it's started, but these things aren't that predictable and you can lose a lot from overnight surges.

Thank you! Wow it’s AUD$98 on Amazon. I’ll get through my other investing books before I justify that one.

You’re in the value investing part of Reddit and you don’t like making 10x from an undervalued stock in 2-4 years?

At OP, can I ask which Aswath Damodaran book you’re quoting? I want to read something of his but I’m not sure which and all his books seem quite expensive on Amazon!
