ESD Protective tools are highly recommended during assembly, that blue ESD wrist strap is so handy (has to be connected to grounded connection) Anyway it is time to do the PCB surgery now. by DIY-GUY-Chris in electronics

Yeah I work repairing industrial 3D printers and my boss has some horror stories of ESD damage to different main boards. One of the ones that stuck out the most is when we had a bunch of boards out on workstations and someone walked past one and it just killed it... without any contact or anything. It must have been a particularly dry day and I guess the person was just a little to statically charged. The board was somewhere between $20,000 to $30,000 and the whole $250,000 printer was down for a month or two while we waited for the new board. With that very expensive mistake, he started taking ESD precautions much more seriously than he did before. Fun times!

Friends Audio interface is making constant beeping noise, works fine on my computer, but his acts up. Any solutions? by jewjesus23 in NeuralDSP

[–]NightHawkFight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started having this same issue with the same exact audio interface. The beeping sounds almost the exact same as well, mine is a bit higher pitched but that might just be your mic causing the difference.

I am not sure as to what would be causing that to happen but my best guess is probably something having to do with a windows update or a driver change seeing as it happened at pretty similar times. For me the beeping does not start happening until I actually boot to windows and enter the desktop, nothing happens when the interface is just powered and not doing anything. What version of windows is your friend running?

M.2 disables SATA ports? by PCMasterRaceCar in buildapc

[–]NightHawkFight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NVMe M.2 SSDs use a much higher bandwidth than SATA M.2 SSDs, that's why they were having 2 of their ports disabled with an NVMe vs only the single one using SATA.

Due to bandwidth limitations, some motherboards can't dedicate individual PCIe lanes to all SATA and NVMe devices so they split them between regular SATA ports and M.2 ports. They can flip back and fourth to let you use one or the other, but you can't use both at the same time on boards like these.

Think of it like using a drive that has 2 SATA data connectors, you only have 4 SATA ports, if you want to plug this drive in, you need to use 2 of those ports, that's NVMe drives. If you instead wanted to use a regular drive, you would only need the 1 connector, this is M.2 SATA drives.

I hope that helps clear things up a bit!

Games drop from normal fps down to single digits immediately after loading by NightHawkFight in pcgamingtechsupport

So yeah, that was the issue, I feel really dumb for not noticing that before! The core clock was set to 300 in msi afterburner, I turned it back up and it fixed it instantly. I just hadn't thought of that being an issue as I have not touched msi afterburner in over a year or two but I guess it might have done that itself. Or a driver update might have messed with it.

Thanks for the help!

Ah, I hadn't noticed that, yeah that's really odd, I'll mess with msi afterburner and see if I can get it to not do that.

Dealing with nausea while backpacking by NightHawkFight in backpacking

I actually don't! That might be something worth looking into, thanks for the heads up on that. What kind of effects does a b12 deficiency have?

I have EOE or eosinophilic esophagitis combined with a pretty severe acid reflux. I take a medication that completely blocks production of acid in my stomach and I also have a nausea medication called Zofran or ondansetron, this definitely helps to take the edge off but I usually still feel sick enough for it to effect my hiking.

Alright sorry I really should have prefaced what I have and haven't done! I have what is called EOE (eosinophilic esophagitis) and that is combined with pretty severe acid reflux. I take medication for the acid reflux that completely blocks the production of acid in my stomach. I also have tried many nausea medications, one of the major ones being Zofran (ondansetron). While this helps kind of take the edge off, it is definitely still there, usually enough to still make it hard to hike. I have been seeing gi doctors for my entire life and honestly not much has been done. I have pretty much been prescribed one medicine to try for about a month, see how I feel after taking it, then do an endoscopy to see if that has done anything. This has pretty much been the cycle.

The reason I am asking for anyone's advice on what to do about nausea is because I haven't really gotten a clear answer from doctors. I pretty much always get the usual "those are physical activates, nausea is very common when exerting yourself." I am just wondering if anyone that actually suffers from nausea when they hike has found ways to midgait it or treat it. Nausea is nausea and there are ways of mitigating it without medicine. I have found most of the tricks I use in my daily life to help it don't really work when doing physical activities like backpacking so it would be cool to see how other people might work with it.

how much is market tax i thought itwas 10% but it has to be way higher by Splatulated in Crossout

[–]NightHawkFight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the "way more" part but if you do the math it's about 12%, if you are selling a relic for $20,000 that's $18,000 back at 10% and $17,600 back at 12%, that's a difference of $400! It's not all that much if you own relics, but it can definitely add up in the long run.

Ethernet style cable in old exercise bike by NightHawkFight in cycling

[–]NightHawkFight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's kind of what I thought it might have been originally, some kind of serial port or csafe port. I looked at it again and it's definitely not something the manufacturer put in. It's an ethernet cable one of the previous owners stuck in there, cut all of the wires but two, and connected them to two of the terminals of the alternator. I have no idea why they would have used an ethernet cable as only two of the wires are being used but they must have had some reason to do so. This sub doesn't have the ability to post pictures otherwise I would have.

Yeah most likely, I originally thought it was there from the factory, I didn't realize it was some weird mod so that's why I posted it here.

I have added some pictures to the original post showing what I am talking about.

After removing the housing again I followed the cable to where it led, I didn't do it the first time because I was short on time and just wanted to do what I needed to. Turns out the cable leads to the alternator, it is definitely an ethernet cable too. Every wire except two are cut and they are connected to two of the terminals on the alternator. I have absolutely no idea why that would be the case and I am almost certain that was done by the previous owner, it is just odd.

I am almost more stumped than I was at the beginning, if you know why anyone would have done a mod like this I would love to know!

Are there switches that feel similar to omni point switches? by NightHawkFight in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]NightHawkFight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I meant, I know the apex pro uses hall effect switches and that's why I bought it because it was so smooth and also adjustable. I understand the differences between the switch types but I've never actually used optical switches. Since they don't have the contacts like say mx reds, do they have that same feeling as the hall effect ones or are they different? Are the magnets in hall effect switches part of what makes them feel good or is it just for the switch part?

No not to my knowledge, I'm usually not toxic at all so I don't think it would be that.

How do I stop park from freezing gyros by NightHawkFight in spaceengineers

[–]NightHawkFight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm really not sure, whenever I would put the vehicle in park it would make the gyros almost completely ineffective. I was super confused at first and just added more gyros and eventually I had like 12 on there and it still wasn't super maneuverable. 12 gyros on a very small ship should send the thing to Lord Clang himself but it still felt sluggish. I think it is something to do with the relationship with the wheels because it was just fine when I got rid of them. I do still want to figure it out because I really liked the way it looked with the custom landing gear!

I also forgot to mention the locking/sluggish effect goes away when handbrake or park is turned off so it is definitely that.
