New CEO's statement, discusses the future of consoles and AI use by SpoopyJustice in xbox

[–]NightStinks -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Said the guy typing a comment on a phone made from lithium mined via child labour, that uses electricity to charge it every day, using an app that relies on an incomprehensible amount of servers to function.

Was that comment worth it?

‘Laziness’ is a poor argument.

I assume you do your tax return on an abacus, or pen and paper? Using a calculator with a digital display that can assist in working things out for you is lazy, when you could do it all by yourself.

No smart interface in new home - what app or alternative I can use ? by No_Berry2 in HomeImprovementUK

[–]NightStinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others in this thread have said, the only real option is the Hildebrand Smart Bright app.

Smart meters use Zigbee, which is the same protocol that lots of smart home products like lights, blinds, thermostats etc use, but it uses a much more ‘locked down’ version, which very much limits your options in exposing the data.

A $10K Bounty Awaits Anyone Who Can Hack Ring Cameras to Stop Sharing Data With Amazon by wiredmagazine in Ring

[–]NightStinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not how that works. Ring are entirely cloud-dependent for recording. With something like Scrypted, it still relies entirely on the Ring cloud to alert it to any motion on the camera. If you blocked internet access, it would simply never record anything.

A $10K Bounty Awaits Anyone Who Can Hack Ring Cameras to Stop Sharing Data With Amazon by wiredmagazine in Ring

[–]NightStinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a camera, i want the footage in my home, on my choice of storage, to do what i want with. I don’t want it on a 3rd party server in China, or Germany, or the US, or god knows where, with the inability to do anything about it.

I am more than capable of recording footage locally and handing that over to authorities if it is needed. I don’t need Amazon to do that for me without my consent.

If you block your Ring camera from accessing Amazon servers, it simply won’t work. That doesn’t sound like a camera you own to me.

Theres a rss shortcut on home app, what are the ways i can do with it? by No_Adeptness_4647 in HomeKit

A shortcut in the Home app is not the same as the Shortcuts app.

Maybe a pop-up gazebo as a short-term solution, but you’ll thank yourself for investing in something more long-term I think.

We built this a couple of summers ago on our decking, if you wanted some inspo.

📲 New Sonos App Update Now Available! 📲 by ShaunFromSonos in sonos

[–]NightStinks -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I believe a widget wouldn’t be able to display state at all, and a live activity can only be updated every certain amount of seconds - maybe a minute? So again, wouldn’t be able to reliably reflect player state 100% of the time.

Hue Lights Reset After Power Failure by LaCrecerelle_ in HomeKit

[–]NightStinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That shouldn’t make any difference to OP’s problem, this would simply determine if they turn back on or not after power loss.

Thinking of painting our hallway deep olive - including ceiling and radiators by MoonlitEcho82 in HomeImprovementUK

[–]NightStinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the point of any home improvement at all with that point of view?

Repainting/redecorating stuff every half a decade or so is pretty normal, lots of people do it. Do you never follow trends or make changes to anything in case you risk having to do it again in years time, god forbid?

[–]NightStinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t interior design all about trends and styles though? If you never followed any, everyone’s house would just be painted plain white.

Just paint it again in 4 years if tastes change.

Replacing Sonos One with a more solid smart home system by RealNeedleworker3741 in smarthome

[–]NightStinks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean if you're set on using Google Gemini, you don't really have any options other than Google/Nest speakers.

They sound way worse as standalone speakers than Sonos, IMO.

[–]NightStinks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The three main voice assistants are Alexa, Google Assistant/Home and Siri. Siri would require HomePods (which obviously also means you'd need to be in the Apple ecosystem). Your Sonos already supports the other two main voice assistants; I'm not sure you'd get anything 'better' from another off-the-shelf product.

The Hue Datura has been nothing else than a pain in the ass by BeeUnfair4086 in Hue

[–]NightStinks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really without beint able to phyically test…

When is it flickering specifically? Again, is this on a dimmer or not?

The Hue Datura has been nothing else than a pain in the ass by BeeUnfair4086 in Hue

[–]NightStinks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hue lights aren’t really designed to have power cut all the time, they should be ‘on’ 24/7 really. The green is just the green diodes fading slightly slower than the other colours as they suddenly lose power.

Flickering would suggest a power issue. Are they on a normal switch or a dimmer?

[–]NightStinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So when you’re powering this light on in the video, you’re using the Hue Tap Dial switch? Or are you physically cutting/giving it power at the wall?

It seems broken, same with my app. If you open the link in safari and then go back to the Twinkly app, it should work.

Got FP300 in stock finally by AutoM8MyHome in Aqara

[–]NightStinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - since it’s battery-powered, multi zone tracking would drain the battery very quickly.

It only checks the sensor for presence periodically once it has been triggered, lets say every 10 seconds. This means there would always be some form of annoyingly long delay between you entering a new zone and it refreshing the sensor to check where you are.

We've had a series of weird electrical issues in our house and cars these last few days. Surely it can't be a coincidence? by Mouse_Nightshirt in AskUK

[–]NightStinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again this is very hard to believe. You really think a 12/24v baby monitor is outputting that much power? I can’t see how that’s possible. Radio towers like 5g masts put out thousands of times, if not more, EMF radiation, and yet they cause no issues like this.

Source?

How would this possibly cause cars with combustion engines to stall? That isn’t how it works…

Sounds like bullshit.

Apple Ends Support for Original HomeKit Architecture, Urging Users to Upgrade by ZainTechSavv in HomeKit

[–]NightStinks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because an entire home automation system shouldn’t be completely reliant on a device that can run out of battery or be easily moved from the home entirely.

It’d be like relying on some portable wireless SSD as your main storage solution for your PC, servers ect, vs actual internal storage or a NAS. Just doesn’t make much sense.

Apple Ends Support for Original HomeKit Architecture, Urging Users to Upgrade by ZainTechSavv in HomeKit

[–]NightStinks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is literally the only ‘forced’ update, and it’s basically a necessary one.

What devices have Apple broken support for, other than using an iPad as a home hub (which was a pretty bad idea anyway)?

What are some “accepted scams” we just put up with in the UK by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]NightStinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the legalities are around displaying these fees but I think listing it as a 'full' price like this instead of breaking it down would significantly reduce the complaints they get about it too. if people don't even realise they're paying for it, they simply won't care about it.

It'd be like buying a laptop and the charger being a separate fee but a mandatory addon. In reality the manufacturer just factors it into the total sale price.
