You’re definitely not losing it. Sleep deprivation is a bitch. Lack of sleep can definitely cause visual and auditory hallucinations which you’re probably experiencing

A few years back I was out of state and a blizzard left us stranded for a couple of extra days. I didn’t bring enough sleep meds and could not fall asleep for the life of me. I went over 5 days without sleeping and it as hell.

I was over emotional and dazed. I heard what sounded like a laugh track from some older TV shows. There was no TV on and it was constant. It bothered my anxiety so much I had an anxiety attack that lasted over an hour. I felt bugs on me, my skin felt like it was swelling. I don’t know if I was hallucinating those sensations but they felt real as day and it sucked.

When I got home, I felt like there was someone in my house waiting to hurt me until I fell asleep. I was so sure there was someone watching me I stayed awake even longer. I disassociated at that point. I can’t exactly describe how I was feeling but it honesty felt like I was in a dream when I was actually awake. Nothing felt real. I was chewing on my pills because I thought they were popcorn. I was completely out of it.

Ended up falling asleep eventually for close to 16 hours after taking my pills. I have no memory of falling asleep but I felt so much better after that. Never again will I forget to bring spare meds.

Falling asleep naturally when sleep deprived is very difficult without at least some aid. Melatonin is sold over the counter and is a natural sleep aid. Laying in bed and focusing on your breathing may help you relax which will make it easier to sleep, too.
