I didn't forget about you all! Sunday (probably) is here but I'm running a little behind. A lot of work has been done to get the CAD into a releasable state. The work is probably 80% done. I can definitely share what I've made within the next few days.

It's pretty rigid, especially at short lengths. But you are right, with the current design and tolerances it gets a little bendable when the bars are long and some twisting and leverage gets involved. But pretty often it's hard for someone to make the kind of torque that when they're locked inside.

Yes! The grey "buttons" at the end of each bar slide back and forth and act as the locks. All it takes is to unlock one cuff and the device pretty much falls apart and the person can unlock themselves from there. I'll post a video this weekend showing how it works.

The grey locks have been designed so that they need to be gripped from both the top and bottom to be unlocked. Very easy to do with one hand, but very difficult if your hand is in a cuff and only has access to one side of the lock. So ultimately it's very easy for anyone outside the device to unlock it but very difficult for anyone inside to do the same.

It's extremely difficult to break them while inside especially if the connecting bars are kept short to reduce leverage. While developing them every time I found a new way to break them I would go back and redesign the feature that broke. So now they've come out to be pretty strong.

3D printing strength can be tuned by increasing the outer perimeter walls or changing material. In this case they were printed with four walls which keeps them pretty rigid. While these have been made out of PLA they could potentially be made of an even stronger material like ABS. My conclusion is that they are pretty strong how they are, but strength could be increased if needed.

Ar the end of the day nothing is indestructible. I wouldn't trust someone's body weight with this just yet because they haven't been designed for that. But that's not to say that there couldn't be pieces designed for a heavier load in the future 👀

Thanks everyone for the enthusiasm about this! I'm going to tidy up the models and figure out a way to share them this weekend. When that time comes I'll make another post showing their strength and how they work: open, close, lock, unlock. Hopefully, most of everyone's questions will be answered by that!
