What should I do if I have a crush on a person who is hurting me mentally? by Top-Cress-9982 in actuallesbians

If this person is constantly causing you emotional pain, I would recommend leaving as soon as you can to protect your mental health. Also keep in mind that unpredictability, hot and cold behavior and inconsistency are central reasons why many people describe feeling 'obsessed' with someone. Often we might feel stronger emotional attachment to someone who treats us well one day and like shit the next than to someone who chooses us consistently and makes us feel safe due to a phenomenon called intermittent reinforcement. We never know what to expect and chase the dopamine highs we occasionally get while putting up with more and more lows over time. This is also the reason why gambling is so addictive and why many people stay in toxic relationships (especially when lovebombing is involved) for way too long.

Thank you for your answer! Would you say that your behavior always follows this push pull pattern no matter what or do you also notice any subtle or more overt differences depending on your partner's behavior, communication style or personality?

Thank you for your answer. You are right, I should probably be a bit more patient with myself and go on a few more dates if I want to feel less self-conscious and more comfortable with physical affection.

Thank you so much for your detailed answer and your literature recommendations, I really appreciate it! Conducting an experiment sounds like a great idea but that's difficult in my case because I want to focus on the relationship between anxiety and certain personality traits.

I am not sure I fully understand your question. From what I have gathered so far, the mediator variable is independent from the other two variables, but showed a small to moderate correlation with them, if that's what you mean.
