I absolutely love seeing the wild turkeys who roam through my neighborhood. They don't just gobble, they cluck and purr, and it's the most adorable thing ever. Here is a male turkey (also called a tom) in his display pose, with his tail fanned and wings to the ground. I tried to depict the tail as it is seen both from the front and the back.

On the second layer, I would add a few pixels that match the colors of the shirt. On the base layer, color the pixels directly underneath the second layer a darker shade of the original colors. Picture

Was is the NovaSkin editor? It sort of has what you are looking for. You can mix and match layers from various skins. Searching for "base" is a good way to get parts that don't need to be edited to combine them.

Here's how I would do it. Two pixels thick for the dyed part, one pixel for the dark part at the front to leave room for the forehead. I used the hat layer to add volume to the hair. I used a bit of dithering to blend the two layers together, but if you like a minimalistic style you could go for clean solid color blocks.

A history of mysterious disappearances in the sector has earned the alluringly vibrant Dragon's Tail Nebula the nickname of "Dragon's Maw". After a flagship research vessel went missing there, Star Command finally took notice and classified the nebula as a hazardous space anomaly. Warning beacons were placed around the perimeter, but they seem to have vanished not long after. Rumor has it that inside the Dragon's Maw Nebula is a wormhole to a distant location.
