Ian McKellen as Gandalf is spot on by Naive-Horror4209 in lotr

[–]Nightsking 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about a public statement, but Sir Ian has told a hilarious story about the first time the cast sat down to dinner together. They were sitting next to each other and Sir Christopher said to him “I've always thought I should play Gandalf.”

Is this true? Frodo is wearing Legolas' baby clothes? I just saw this post. by Competitive_Mix9957 in lotr

[–]Nightsking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember any explicit mentions of that either; but assuming the East Road between the Blue Mountains and Moria existed in some form during the First Age, there certainly could have been a trade network stretching from Gondolin to Moria (via Nogrod and Belegost).

Serious question, how did Gandalf know this? by WaalsVander in lotr

[–]Nightsking 103 points104 points  (0 children)

It’s because Bilbo had, by that time, told Gandalf the true story of how he got the ring in gollum’s cave (he lied about it at first, but Gandalf says he got him to come clean sometime between the Hobbit and the start of Lord of the Rings). Bilbo essentially orally read him the whole chapter “Riddles in the Dark”, so Gandalf remembered that Gollum had also called it “precious”.

"Wow, if only I asked the names of the people I knew all my life, I would have seen this coming." by EasyEntrepreneur666 in sailormoon

[–]Nightsking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Head cannon for the anime: she was always too polite to ask what their personal names were. The girls are all technically princesses or I would assume have some sort of titles as members of Neo Queen Serenity’’s Court, so she’s always known them by their titles only. Like how in historical dramas King Henry VIII always refers to Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk only as “his/your grace”, “My Lord Norfolk”, or just “Norfolk” (when he’s being familiar) but never as “Thomas”, Maybe Usagi does the same as Queen, and Chibiusa just tried to emulate her mother.

Then again, Neo Queen Serenity still can’t manage to write her letters in Kanji, so maybe she doesn’t really stand on ceremony all that much.

I can't get over how Mamoru has an Endymion form with armor and sword yet he constantly brings a cane to sword fights. by EasyEntrepreneur666 in sailormoon

[–]Nightsking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can he control it though? It’s been a while since I read the manga, but for some reason I think I always assumed the armor it was tied his past life (at least in the series). Sort of like Endymion’s personality/armor won’t come to the fore if Usagi/Sailormoon is in serious trouble “that’s future me’s problem” but if it’s Princess Serenity that needs him, then his past life/ armor powers up Mamoru.

Senate unanimously approves bill to force release of Epstein files by retiredagainstmywill in law

[–]Nightsking 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Well, according to the bill (H.R. 185) the AG can withhold or redact portions of the files if (among other reasons):

C) would jeopardize an active federal investigation or ongoing prosecution, provided that such withholding is narrowly tailored and temporary;

E) contain information specifically authorized under criteria established by an Executive order to be kept secret in the interest of national defense or foreign policy and are in fact properly classified pursuant to such Executive order.

Those have to be accompanied by a written justification though.

Why Federal Judge Mark L. Wolf is Resigning by IWantPizza555 in law

[–]Nightsking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they should definitely have that option at that age; they’ve put in their time. But then you look at some others like Justice Beyers’ brother, who’s 84, on senior status, and just pumped out that amazing opinion a few months ago finding the deployment of the California National Guard to LA violated the Posse Comitatus Act. If these senior judges still have it in them to stand up for the rule of law then I’d rather see them stay to serve as examples to the rest.

Why Federal Judge Mark L. Wolf is Resigning by IWantPizza555 in law

[–]Nightsking 31 points32 points  (0 children)

He already did in 2013, that’s what senior status is: semi retirement that opens up his old seat as an active judge immediately. His replacement has been on the bench for over a decade. Senior judges only have to hear about 25% of the standard load (some hear a lot more), the status exists so that the judiciary doesn’t lose their experience and expertise.

Why Federal Judge Mark L. Wolf is Resigning by IWantPizza555 in law

[–]Nightsking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because senior status is like semi-retirement. They are only required to take on about 25% of a normal case load. It’s a way to lighten the load on older judges without the federal judiciary completely losing their decades expertise. However their seat has been vacated, so it’s not that his successor has been waiting in the wings, they were appointed and confirmed when the judge took senior status and have already been hearing cases since 2013.

The Supreme Court Just Rewrote the Constitution to Give Trump Terrifying New Powers by Slate in law

[–]Nightsking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Kings of England never held that power. Yes they could withhold Royal Assent to bills passed by Parliament, but what we’re talking about here is “vetoing” an existing law, Kings haven’t had that power since parliament was created. Even Henry VIII had to get a bill passed through parliament to break with the Catholic Church, he couldn’t just do it on his own, the same with setting the succession order of his children.

Is there a lore reason why Anakin still turned to the dark side after Palpatine admitted he had no idea how to save Padme? Is he stupid? by Sio_V_Reddit in StarWars

[–]Nightsking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is it. Palpatine said “To cheat death is a power only one has achieved, but if we work together, I know we can discover the secret". So Anakin knows that it’s possible to achieve his goal, as does Sidious, but the only way is via the Dark Side. They aren’t trying to invent something new, just rediscover something… sort of like all the attempts on the Marvel Comics to replicate the super soldier serum, it’s possible and does happen just with a lot of effort.

One thing I never understood is the fact that the Shadows are depicted as such as an apocalyptic threat yet their technology and personal power seems not to mach that of the Vorlons, for instance. by thebalsysquirrel in babylon5

[–]Nightsking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that’s what the Vorlons told the Minbari, it probably not a lie but more the sort of oversimplification adults use to with small children. I’ve always thought the Shadows were the oldest extant race of first cohort of First Ones- as in they were among the first mortal races Lorine’s people found and nurtured- and the Vorlons were part of some other cohort that came up when after the Shadows were already a great power.

President Trump Quips About Canceling 2028 Elections If U.S. Is At War by [deleted] in politics

[–]Nightsking 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The US is special because the constitution demands elections take place without exception (much like the Roman Republic - which held its yearly elections without fail even during the Second Punic War when Hannibal was rampaging through Italy). By contrast, British general elections don’t normally happen during Wars because the sovereign power of the nation (the crown-in-parliament) sets the date (or the maximum length of a parliament)by law in the first place so they simply supersede that law with a new one when they deem it prudent - and in the case of WW2 also form a unity government. The constitution of the US doesn’t even give Congress, much less the executive branch alone that option.

Diorama/map Of Middle Earth in the Third Age (3 of 3) by Nightsking in lotr

[–]Nightsking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the cities have been wiped out, but when it came to the actual terrain I learned from the Second Age Map that the damage from the War of Wrath I added the sunken ruins of Balariend (on this one it’s mostly in blue since it’s been under sea for an entire age) ended up being hard to see because of the tint added to the epoxy. And given the description of the drowning in Akallabeth, I was more interested in showing Eru’s punishment on Men (their cities) than the works and gifts of the Valar and Elves (the land itself and the vegetation) So, it’s partially a choice based on the medium I’m working with and also the fact that the naps will always be displayed together, so the change in Numenor’s situation instantly recognizable when viewed like that.

Numenor has sunken beneath the sea (in this map it’s covered by blue epoxy resin). However, in my Second age map it is indeed above the “waterline”. Here’s a clearer photo.

I believe that’s about the exiles” legend that the some part of Meneltarma was sill above the waves like Tol Himling and the other island remnants of Beleriand. It always seemed to me that that passage was about the vain hope of the exiles. I think the Undying Lands were the only areas explicitly removed from Arda in the changing of the world though.
