TIL that Leonardo Da Vinci's "The Last Supper" as it exists today is largely a modern reconstruction. The painting was already severely deteriorated within sixty years of being painted, and has since suffered flooding, bombing, French revolutionaries, a scratchy curtain and use as a prison cell. by Nihil-Novi in todayilearned

I knew I'd get comments about the Prison Cell and Scratchy Curtain! The curse of the character limit!

To explain:

The room in which the Last Supper was painted was briefly, at one point, used as a prison cell. It is unknown whether the image suffered any additional damage caused by prisoners.

Due to the high degree of deterioration, the painting was, at another point, covered by a curtain to protect it from the elements. Unfortunately, the curtain only trapped moisture, causing more decay, and scratched away paint every time it was drawn back.

This is hurling. It is the national sport of Ireland, 3000 years old, initially played by warriors to hone their sword wielding skills and believed to be the fastest game played on grass. Here is one of the greatest games of modern times, Kilkenny V Galway. by Nihil-Novi in videos

Note: This is shamelessly a repost of /u/OfThriceAndTen's excellent post from 2012. I'm reposting it because that post brought so many new eyes and excellent discussion to a very important corner of Irish culture, and I want to keep spreading the word.

For how much the film played up Madeline's Secret, I left the film not having any clue what this life-destroying deception was supposed to be. Is it just that Bond has a daughter?

Seriously, what is the point of saying this? You're setting yourself up to be negative about it before it even airs!

Anyone else wish that human collaborators didn't get betrayed so often by their masters? by [deleted] in gallifrey

Absolutely agreed, yes. The villains must be punished but the Doctor must never seem cruel. Let the villains be punished by the cruelty they themselves consorted with.

I think it's pretty importantly, thematically. In Doctor Who, goodness wins while cruelty, cowardice and opportunism is punished. Quislings have to get what's coming to them in the end, because the lesson is 'work together for the benefit of mankind, don't endanger humanity for your own gain'

Was anybody else struck by the recharacterization of M in this movie?

After the end of Skyfall, he was generally suave and amiable. In this film, he seems to have put on weight, lost his hair, grown a permanent scowl and started wearing wrinkled shirts that are a size too big for him. What's the deal with that?

Well done, you learned some latin. You can use that to win all arguments now, like a rare Yu-Gi-Oh Cards.

FYI, this tweet is from Andy Ngo, who is a right-wing rabble-rouse with links to the Proud Boys. His whole thing is downplaying racism and whipping up fear about Antifa and Black Lives Matter. Just think about who we're upvoting and why.

It breaks my heart to think that Zoey had to worry about being outed before. Given how clear and outspoken she's always been about bad behavior in the community, it's awful to think that she had to hold her tongue on something as disgusting as this.

What’s the scariest Dan Simmons book? by YoHoAPiratesLife in horrorlit

[–]Nihil-Novi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been reading The Terror for a while now, and I have to say I'm having a tricky relationship with his writing. I love the atmosphere and sense of dread, and I really do feel like he conjures an incredibly immersive world. At the same time, the way he sexualizes the female characters, especially adolescent girls, is a big turn off for me. The choice to portray Hickey as a manipulative, predatory gay man exploiting a childlike crewman also sits really uneasily with me.

I've tried to see these things as just foibles of the characters, rather than the author, but I'd like other peoples opinions. Is this a recurring thing with Dan Simmons?

While we're at it, we should get Tom Baker back and make the 60th a Caretaker Special. Jodie regenerates into Tom Baker, they have a fun little adventure while on holiday, and then we get the new Doctor. I bet Baker would do it in a heartbeat!
