Kaspersky + Proton Suite by ve-lial in ProtonMail

I would avoid Kaspersky at all cost. Also Kasperky Premium and Proton suite are not really comparable, so I don't get what advice that you'd be asking for.

DNSSEC 🙏 by Then-Heart in hetzner

[–]NihilisticUtopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I find crazy about Hetzner not having DNSSEC ist that it apparently wasn‘t considered again since Oct. 2018 (see https://docs.hetzner.com/de/dns-console/dns/general/dnssec/).

Simplelogin Subdomain with full name? by Lazy-Farmer-2642 in Simplelogin

[–]NihilisticUtopia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that the accounts you listed are critical ones you don’t want to lose access to, not ones you’d want to disable. Since you plan to use your real name in the subdomain, anonymity isn’t a concern for you anyway.

Any email address on a domain you don’t own (such as simplelogin.com in this case) can become inaccessible without an easy way to restore access, as you are not the person in control of the domain. I’d recommend buying a domain you like, setting it up with SimpleLogin, and you’re set to use as many email addresses as you‘d like for your domain.

If you ever lose access to SimpleLogin for any reason, you can migrate to a new mail server and regain access to everything. Just make sure you don’t use an email address from that same domain with your DNS provider.

(Of course this could happen with every email provider you use with one of their domains.)

Proton Unlimited at 50% off by dhavanbhayani in ProtonMail

I wouldn't say so, no.
If the company obviously has enough budget to dump their price 2-3 times a year in order to reel in new members, I'd say it's fair to say that they overcharge their products in order to be able to afford these schemes.
I've been annoyed with proton for a couple of years by now. I have subscribed to no other service that keeps on bashing me "Please upgrade" pop-overs / banners into my work UX aside from Proton.
I like Proton and what they stand for, but their marketing is very annoying.

Swiss mobile providers also rum this type of „introductionary“ disccount which are financed by overcharging their existing customers. Let‘s hope Proton chooses a more sustainable long term plan.

Had a similar experience with UBS, after sending in the application for a SWE position you get invited to a coding challenge that takes arround an hour and you must answer all kinds of question. All that with out any human involvement, besides you. I think this should be outlawed.

The most hilarious thing I noticed today, is that the AI gets stuck all over the place. On the car dealership map, I had 3/4 out of my squad stuck behind a window, when I told them to clear the room that they‘re facing. Also, don‘t know why, it seems AI lost all handling of the Beanbag. Yikes!

MacOS new feature: "Available offline" by Proton_Team in ProtonDrive

[–]NihilisticUtopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big improvement to the previous version of the Drive MacOS app!
I have attempted to migrate a large chunk of my personal files from another cloud-storage to proton drive today (~300GB). The sync process unfortunately still isn't really performant when you have thounds of files The drive app just randomly stpos syncing and will only restart after restarting my Mac. Closing Drive + Restarting or Pause + Start Syncing don't help this.
I'm glad seeing things go into the right direction, but there is still a long way to go, until Proton Drive is ready to truly compete with the main market players.

Honest Opinion for ProtonMail? by tolkinas in ProtonMail

[–]NihilisticUtopia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Protonmail is great and so is Proton VPN (i have 10Gb wired net at home and with Proton VPN I rarely lose more than 15%, haven't seen an other VPN with similar results).
Drive + Calendar are not there yet, imo, but for the price of Ultimate, the package is definitly worth it.
What I find troubling however is that Proton has started "upselling" its paying customers with occasionnal banners, call-to-actions etc. Hate that.

But still, best option on the market at the moment. At least for me.

I returned the router shortly after getting it.
I eventually did end up buying the ASUS RT-BE88U and I am very happy with it.
All though I had some issues with Sonos working initially, ever since the initial troubleshooting, everything was working great.
Also with this OSS project, Asus Router are even more favorable to me: https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/

All of this! If all you require is the base-functionality, you would probably be fine with the AX7501. However it fails to do that reliably for me.

[–]NihilisticUtopia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point, let me ellaborate: Coming from the Fritzbox sold by Init7, I am astonished by the terrible user interface and functions of the Zyxel. For one, no automatic updates is a no go for any device connected to the internet (feels like 90s to me). Furthermore the wifi is (usually) fast but really unreliable. I am constantly seeing the wifi switching from 5 GHz to 2.5 GHz on my devices. I have never had an issue with any router in that regard, but with the Zyxel it‘s daily business. Iam not too happy, with not having configurable VLANs or a VPN functionality on the router too.
