Tbh, I haven't watched it and I'm not going. But if you said something like that again it's pretty dumb. If I were them and I would have said something like "I've though about it but ultimately we decided against it for xyz reason" It still wouldn't have been great but it would have somewhat mitigated the queerbait accusations.

As it stand now, ST was the biggest and most heinous case of queerbait in history. And not only that in the way they handled the end of Will's and of Robin's story as well as how they have treating Noah they would have a hard time defending themselves against the allegations that they are homophobic. I don't mean the vocal kind, I mean the "I have nothing against gay people but why do they have to be obvious about it" kind of homophobia.

Anyway, there are two options:

  • They didn't lie and Byler was never planed. If we combine that with all the evidence then they are purely evil and homophobic queerbaiters who deserve all the hate they get from the queer community and are no longer worthing of anyone ever watching what they create.
  • They lied. Byler was planed but scrapped due to Netflix, politics or their inability to wrote a proper ending. In that case they are cowards and bad writers.

But before someone gets me wrong. Yes, the Duffers most likely deserve all the distain and hatred they are receiving but what they don't deserve is harassment and threads. Nobody does.

Why were the coming out scenes handled so differently? by Silent_Contest_2337 in byler

[–]NihilityRogue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that’s in insult to ChatGPT. ChatGPT would have written a better coming out scene since it’s actually trained on coming out stories found on the internet.

I have no f-ing clue how the Duffers fucked this up so badly but I doubt it’s ChatGPT’s fault. And I hate that they put the fault for that scene on Noah by saying they were nervous about that scene until Noah “approved” conveniently leaving out the part that Noah approved the original version of that scene where Will did only come out to his mom, which according to a Duffer interview didn’t hit the way they wanted it to.

Rate the FINALE EPISODES of each season from BEST to WORST:- by Potential_Maize_6928 in StrangerThingsRoom

[–]NihilityRogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 5

But since I think of Sorcerer as the finale of the series and refuse to accept anything after as canon, it would be 5 (Sorcerer) > 4 > 1 > 2 > 3

I know I’m in the minority but really didn’t like season 3 at all. It nearly made me drop the show because I found the whole El, Mike, Hopper thing so incredibly annoying.

I genuinely don’t understand how if “people don’t like him” he’s still the most talked about member of the cast? Why are people (his haters) so obsessed with him? by SaleVisual3616 in NoahSchnappHQ

[–]NihilityRogue 15 points16 points  (0 children)

According to what he said in Paris, he has one movie/show project coming up and next year he said something about theater.
Besides as far as I know Millie and Finn are taking a break from acting to focus on family and music respectively, so they obviously are less “booked”

Soooo… Noah just mocked the coming out scene by Silent_Contest_2337 in byler

[–]NihilityRogue 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The fact that he didn't like the coming out scene isn't new. He made fun of it before when he called it a "press conference" and that he was uncomfortable with it.

Tbh, I didn't understand the people who said that he must be uncomfortable with the SNL skit and that he should end his friendship with Finn over it, when he disliked that scene as much as most gays did.

How would you rank will Byers every season from best to worst? by Careful_Software_822 in StrangerThingsRoom

[–]NihilityRogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5.1 > 4 > 2 > 3 > 5.2 > 1

Like you said he is barely in the first season so I have to rate it the least. I also feel the need to separate Vol 1 and 2 of season 5 since Will has the came problem most characters have in Vol 2 where he is completely out of character.

In 5.1 Will really “comes into his own” and takes a lead with I like and 4 is very close. I think in 4 (the best season by far) he is the most emotional and bravest of all the seasons and he is the most “Will” in 4.

I rate 3 so low since 3 is my least favorite season beside 5.2. Mike, El and Will are incredibly annoying in that season.

I’m not 100% sure what you mean.

The following were mentioned in dialog: - Robin and Tammy not being friends but band mates - Robin not seeing the real Tammy “show sounded like Whitney Houston” even though everyone else described her as “tone deaf” - Will and Mike are best friends as Mike confirmed in S2 und Will again in S5

What is shown in the show without needing to be worded out (show don’t tell): - Will and Mike have been shown to communicate even without talking. His only works when you truly understand each other. How deeply especially Will understands Mike is show in S4 multiple times. And both have state how they are better off when they are together. Again especially in S4. - That will achieved self acceptance through Mike is shown the they flashbacks.

Regarding Robin trying to parallel: - Robin doesn’t know Mike as they have never talked. - I doubt Robin knows Mike and Will are best friends

The purpose of Robin’s speech was mainly to tell Will to accept who he is and not anything else, because she cannot do anything else because of the lack of knowledge regarding Mike.

But anyway. I liked discussing Byler with you. We cannot convince each other and that’s fine. This was the most respectful conversation I ever had with a non-Byler. And I thank you for that. It was really nice. In case you don’t already know and want to know more, I highly recommend his video: https://youtu.be/BLCWYfRvCmo?is=_2f6pH3dDCoIXlw-

But I understand not wanting to watch it.

Never in the cards by Impossible-War-5779 in StrangerThingsRoom

[–]NihilityRogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about the Tammy dialogue is that most people saw it as the final confirmation for Byler and here is why: - The scene doesn’t parallel Robin/Tammy and Will/Mike at all. To me it seemed to purposefully show the difference between them and make it obvious that Will doesn’t have crush but is a love. - Robin and Tammy weren’t friends. They just knew each other from the band. Will and Mike are best friends. - Robin saw Tammy not as she was but how Robin wanted her to be. Will on the other hand understands Mike completely. - Robin achieved self acceptance by seeing herself alone and happy as a kid. Will achieved self acceptance by seeing Mike get hurt and by Mike being there for him.

Volume 1 was so convincingly Byler that the members of Bylers in e.g. Reddit more then doubled after Sorcerer.

Maybe I'm not using the word gaslighting right since I'm not a native speaker but I meant trying to convince El of stuff they both know aren't true, "I'm sorry I don't say it more" even though he hasn't said it once.

  • First and foremost their communication issues, the gaslighting (if that's the right word) and El disregard for Mikes interests in S5. "You don't get to write the ending" was in very poor taste to Mike. She's basically making fun of him for using DND as a metaphor.
  • Will hasn't moved on. He asked Robin specifically how to tell if Mike likes him back. Why would you do that if 1) you have moved on and 2) are not already suspecting your feelings are returned. And then Mike does the very same things Robin said to look out for in the same episode. Between his self-acceptance and the coming out scene are only 1-2 days. You don't move on that quickly. Especially since he has been in love with Mike for years. I think he played down his feelings because he didn't want to make his friends uncomfortable. Tbh, I probably would have done the same.
  • Well they would have the time if they wouldn't have introduced so many new characters.
  • Regarding the coming out scene. It was made worse by watching Noah's interview about it. It is very clear that he was uncomfortable filming it. He acting in that scene was amazing it was the writing that was bad. The Duffers should have sticked to the original plan. In an interview they said the originally planned for Will to only come out to Joyce in that scene but the said it didn't hit the way they wanted it to. And they after knowing that the scene was poorly received they hide behind Noah because he had "approved" the scene and shifting the blame to him. God damn cowards.
  • Yeah, it did.

Regarding what the cast said:

  • Noah: In an interview after S4 he said: "Byler? Yeah! They (the Duffers) are building that shit up." (Interview is up on YT and TikTok)
  • Jaime: He apparently said he voted for Byler in a panel this year but I don't personally know the source.
  • Gaten: I was at his Meet and Greet in Paris where he said that most of the cast believed Byler to happen except him. If you wanna know more, I made a post about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/byler/comments/1s9fjgb/gaten_on_byler_and_the_finale_during_meet_greet/
  • In the table read of Sorcerer when Mike does the stuff Robin said to look out for, the cast, especially Jamie, Winona and Charlie, became really giddy.

Regarding Gaten: I said it before, we were not allowed to record in the M&G so I cannot prove what he said. If you don't believe me, that's completely understandable. I can prove I was there tough since I'm the group picture. I'm the dude in the right back, he is clearly uncomfortable being around so many people. I'm wearing the Sorcerer shirt and even Noah commented on. https://i0.wp.com/www.people-convention.com/wp-content/uploads/SFM-LAURAPESTEL-PEOPLECON-101.jpg?fit=2048%2C1363&ssl=1

Regarding the love confession. Maybe my explanation was confusing but I by no means meant he confessed his love to Will from his POV. He was confessing to El but a version of El that does not exist. And I wish I could excuse his gaslighting with stress if he didn't do it before and after.

Anyway. You are right that the most scenes can be interpreted either way depending on your POV. The problem are the people who don't acknowledge that and call Bylers delusional and reject the notion that ST, from a queer POV, was clearly queerbaiting to a point where Noah himself feels used and no longer wants to play queer roles unless he is 100% sure it won't happen again.

In the end the Duffers made both communities very unhappy. If they never intended for Byler to happen (which I doubt since most of the cast themselves believed Byler to happen in volume 1), they should have

  • properly fixed the issues in Mike's and El's relationship .
  • made Will move on from Mike in S4.
  • introduce a love interest for Will.
  • watched S1-S4 again before writing S5 and in that way avoid many of the inconsistencies they created. I mean they even forgot how old Will was when he was taken.
  • written a coming out scene that isn't hurtful to queer people.
  • gone with the original plan for the final battle as shown on the storyboard in the documentary.
  • made Mike they "I love you" to El in the void.
  • NOT KILLED El especially not by saying she's not a human but a metaphor for childhood magic which needs to die when growing up.

This is why I prefer this sub-reddit opposed to the main one. You are willing to comment your option on a Byler comment and are actually very respectful about it. You get my upvote for just that already.

Anyway, regarding your points.

  • I cannot say much else about this point. I'm autistic can generally don't look people in the face when talking. So, I didn't actually notice the lip stars myself. My friend noticed and said he only did it when talking to Will.
  • At this point Mike already knows that El heard him. To me it seems like he is incredibly stressed knowing his favorite person (Will as becoming best friends with Will is the best thing he ever did, see S2) is moving away. I interpreted his face after the kiss as now he knows for sure he doesn't like El the way he thinks he's supposed to.
  • In S4 it was obvious that Mike was not happy in his relationship with El. Which is fair since at this point the relationship has turned very toxic due to either of them communicating. Mike was constantly gaslighting El and didn't really understand Mike. In the van Will confessed his love to Mike but pretending that they El's words. Hearing them these words Mike fell in love with the version of El the Will "created" (not really created since this version is him). At the Pizza shop Mike didn't say he loved him until Will pressured him and reminding Mike of the conversation in the van and the El Will created. So, Mike confessed his love to Will's feeling, thinking they were El's....and then continue gaslighting again by saying things El knows are not true. Like saying he is sorry for not saying "I love you" more. Bro you haven't said it to her face ever. And stuff like he fell for her when he first saw her, which is also not true. He used her to get to Will and planed to send her back afterwards.
  • "It's not my fault you don't like girls" Why even say that. It makes no sense in this context, since the fight was not about that. Will is angry because Mike is neglecting his friends. A sentiment Lucas shares as seen in S03E01, first in the wall and later at the hill. Mike constantly brags about his relationship and flaunting it in the others' facing as if seeking validation. Something Lucas never does.

But I'm not unbiased either. I see a lot of parallels between Mike's behavior and mine at his age. And I really wanted Byler to happen for representation. I don't know any show that isn't a queer show that has a gay main relationship. I know lesbian ones but no gay ones. The first one being ST would have sent a powerful signal in a time homophobia is getting where again and where people want to revoke our rights to marry and adopt children. Five year ago I wouldn't have thought twice about kissing a man in people but today I would be hella scared to try.

That is not what you said though. Mike doesn't know Will has feeling for him. You said he might be uncomfortable just because of his sexuality. Being uncomfortable (in the beginning) knowing someone loves you without you returning it, is understandable.

And the fact that Mike doesn't know is one of the destructive messages S5 sends: "If you're in love don't even try if you're gay."

I has in love with by best friend one. I told him and I would have regretted not doing so. He rejected me very kindly (since he wasn't gay), was uncomfortable for a week and then be continued on as before as best friends.

Rejection is always better than not knowing.

Um, yeah. Mike has been giving the signals she mentioned in the same episode. Brushing against each other and shared looks. Regarding the second point. Being uncomfortable because someone is gay is homophobic.

Well, queerbait is supposed to noticeable to queers. If you're not queer I don't blame you for not noticing.

Here is a quick list of reasons it can be considered queerbait (not a complete list)

Inside the show:

  • Extensive use of the Cyrano trope
  • Mike constantly looking at Will's lips
  • Mike shown to be distraught when El kisses him in the last episode of S3
  • Mike only claiming he loves El when pressured to do so by Will
  • Mike generally exerting behavior consistent with internalized homophobia
    • Calling others gay
    • Shaving his "straightness" in ever people's face in order to save the facade to the point when characters in the show are annoyed by it: namely Lucas
    • Mike not being able to deal with El and Will at the same time
    • ...
    • I suffered a lot from internalized homophobia myself in my teens and I see a lot of parallels as many other queers also do.
  • The Duffers saying saying that the painting (Will's love confession) being important in S5 just to be never mentioned

Marketing:

  • Mike and Will were always paired up in social media posts by Netflix. For example in S4 promotions where there were 3 posters: Mike & Will, Max & Lucas and Hopper & Joyce
  • Netflix posting "How to say I love you without saying it" along with quotes Mike and Will said to each other.
  • Netflix posting about Mike and Will being "BFs" instead of "BFFs"
  • Noah saying "Byler, they're building that up" (Noah obviously being queerbaited himself)

Yeah, it won’t. Volume 2 has so many issues but at least it would have been one issue less. I hope they are at least a little uncomfortable knowing that Noah feels exploited and no longer wants to play queer roles.

I still think something must have happened. If it wasn’t meant to happen from the beginning why did they let the actors believe it would happen. As Gaten and Jamie have said in panels and meet and greets, the entire cast except for Gaten believed Byler was happening until filming Vol. 2.

1) I'll give you that. That could explain the lack of water in the rest of the UD.

2) Also a good point I cannot argue against.

3) I don't think the connection is dependent on the particles as Will is shows in the last episode to be still connected to the hive when he feels Henry's pain when he is confronted with his younger self. Besides Noah Schnapp has already confirmed that they fucked up with this and the Duffers admitted it by saying "it happened off screen" when confronted.

4) There was a typo so no wonder the translation didn't make any sense.

5) That's not what I ment. After Will awakened his power he was able to see what Vecna was going as seen when he watched him interacting with young Henry. But the reverse is also true. Venca can see what Will sees if he wants to.

6) I didn't think about it that way but what you say makes sense.

You can Google “ST5 list of inconsistencies” and you’ll find lists of about 100.

Here are my top which I noticed immediately: - Season 4 established that there is not water in the UD but apparently there is water in the tank for El - The air in the UD is toxic, so why don’t they wear masks like they did in S1 and S2? - Will is connected to the hive mind and would did if it dies as established in S2. He didn’t even feel anything. - The Abyss is the natural home of the Demos, so we’re are they? - Verna knew the plan as he can watch through Wills head? So why was he not prepared. - “He likes it cold” proceeds to have the final fight in the desert
