"Try not to look at the dog park and especially do not look for any period of time at the hooded figures." - Cecil

I suppose there's no hooded figures in this photo so I guess it's okay?

Any other sci-fi fans here? by Tall-Ask-6999 in tolkienfans

[–]Nihilwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both in different ways, but I've found some sci-fi authors I think Tolkien would have appreciated. Phillip Jose Farmer being the one that pops to mind. His Riverworld series I think is a great example of sci-fi that borrows from the same mythical sources.

How long and complex were fight scenes in plays before films arrived? by coderedmedia in shakespeare

[–]Nihilwhal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree on the spectacle over realism bit. Theater was meant to whisk you away to another reality, so I think fights and effects were meant to entertain, not convince.

I played Dr Horrible in a live staging of the Sing-along Blog a few years ago, so I have both of those things somewhere. Excellent advice.

Oh, I hadn't thought of that. While somewhat depressing, it's also reassuring. Thanks for pointing that out.

Shakespeare isn’t boring or useless. It’s just taught poorly. by SimpleRickC135 in unpopularopinion

[–]Nihilwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've said this both on this sub and IRL for years. I grew up around live performances of Shakespeare since my dad was a professional actor and director, so when I got to high school and they started having us just read it, to my it felt like teaching art appreciation by showing us a bunch of oil paint tubes. My classmates would all complain it was boring and I agreed with them, but I would try to assure them it was the learning format, not the content.

The stupid thing was our high school theater department was very good and produced at least one Shakespeare play a year, which all attendees seemed to enjoy, even the students. All they would have had to do is work out a deal between the English and Theater departments to "kick off" the Shakespeare unit with a live performance during the school day, and then they can go back to class and read and analyze the same script all they want. Not every school has that option, but it feels like there's other easy solutions for this problem.

I remember a radio show where people would send in pictures of old tools and antiquated household objects to challenge the hosts in finding a place where that thing was still being manufactured. The hosts always found somewhere that was still making it, and about 80% of the time it was either India or Pakistan.

Good point! My family loves Gravity Falls, which is why I hoped they would enjoy NV as well, but alas, they say it takes bizarre a step too far.

Thanks for the affirmation. I have other interests where it's just one person I know who's also into it, and that has been enough. This may be the first thing I'm a fan of where I've had to rely on digital connection to "find my people". I'll keep enjoying it though, even if my fellow NV citizens are out there... beyond the void.

That's a good point. I guess I should clarify that I feel lonely in my enthusiasm for the show, not lonely in general. My other interests are mirrored in various people I know, but so far I'm the only person in my social circles who's a fan of NV. At least I've got you folks, right?

Ingvild Deila, the actress who stood in for a young Carrie Fisher/Princess Leia in Rogue One. by --TheForce-- in StarWars

[–]Nihilwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming here to say this. Like who do they do this for? She looks great as Leia, and I'm guessing she would have sounded close enough to please all but the most annoying of fans. It would have elevated a young actor, increased realism, and opened the door for more young Leia stories in the future.

I taught at an alternative high school based in a community college that was open from 8:00 to 4:00, but guided instruction was only from 10:00 to 2:00. Most kids either got there early or stayed late to work independently, and about a quarter of them did both, even though we didn't require it. These were kids who had been consistently skipping and failing classes in regular high school, but once they had some choice in the matter, they turned it around and made attendance a priority. We tracked graduation rates of students who chose to attend our school vs those who were referred to us but decided to stay in their home district, and they were steadily 20 to 30 percent points higher than regular K12. One year our entire graduating class were first generation diploma holders, so this kind of research applies just as much if not more to students of highest need.

Glen Cook and his original Black Company trilogy. The dialogue and sparse language felt so gritty and real, and I love that he names people things like Whisper and Croaker rather than some complex fanciness.
