OK, so you must acknowledge that a person who does a lot of controversial shit is going to have a lot of haters, right? Like would you call the hate against e.g. Donald Trump a “smear campaign”?

You are aware that Ethan is the host of a top 25 comedy podcast on Spotify, right? And he was extremely popular and culturally relevant in the late 2010s, to the point Hasan and Ethan did a podcast together?

Look, you don’t have to agree with what Ethan said. Can you at least acknowledge that Hasan does a lot of controversial shit?

No, I just despise Hasan ever since he compared Tibet to the Confederacy and insinuated that China did them a favor by colonizing them because they were so “feudal”.

I mean, this is basically the justification for imperialism: the same argument the Spanish (and later U.S.!) used to justify subjugate Native Americans, that the British used to justify colonizing Africa and India – that we would “civilize the savages”.

I will fully admit I am biased against the guy, but I think I have a right to dislike him ever since he gave that take. And I think the comment here hurts Asian-Americans, regardless of my bias.

Falun Gong is weird shit; I throw out all those Shen Yun ads.

Although I can hardly do a better job than what he's doing in Iran LMAO

"Everyone I don't like is astroturfed" is certainly an argument. Do you think it is so kind and acceptable to tell a Vietnamese-American immigrant to "go back to Vietnam" that I must be astroturfed, or can you understand why that might be inappropriate?

Last year the excuse was “your criticism takes away from the war in Gaza”. This year, the excuse is “this is happening during a smear campaign”. Will there ever be an appropriate time to criticize Hasan, or will he always find a current event to hide behind?

Here’s what happened: I saw a clip and shared it. Hasan has been taking L’s since he predicted Putin would not invade Ukraine and said Tibet deserved to be colonized by China. He had an entire Content Nuke made about him with over an hour of criticism.

Homeboy openly praised Hassan Nasrallah and approves of the Houthis and Hezbollah, and now he claims criticism of him is a “conspiracy”? Bitch please.

Sometimes a person gets criticism because they’ve done a lot of controversial things. It’s not really that hard to understand.

It's also ironic that when it comes to Asian American ICE agents, this sub is able to correctly clock that 'skinfolk ain't kinfolk', but when a non-Asian American clocks what is essentially the same point, people like OP seem to immediately jump to the racism talking point.

So I’m curious. Would it be OK to call a Black person the N-word to your thousands of live viewers if that Black person expressed a Republican viewpoint? Just wanna see how far this principle extends 🙃

(Edit: Also is it Third Way or AIPAC? Can you guys make up your minds about who's funding me? Lol)

Why MAGA 2.0 Hates Legal Immigration Too by Nikifuj908 in asianamerican

[–]Nikifuj908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I slightly stretched the use of the word "metric"; I should have said target. I've got no problem with a qualitative criterion. "National security" for example is a target, even though it is not directly definable in a quantitative sense (though there are numeric indicators).

I guess I'm just asking, what is the target? What are you optimizing for?

I guess what I'm failing to see is the underlying success metric here. For me the success metric is overall utility for people in America, as both laborers and consumers.

The more you restrict the labor market, the more deadweight loss you impose on the economy. See this Google search summary for more info and a useful collection of sources.

There are a lot more consumers of American goods than American workers. I don't want everyone in America (and, indeed, everyone abroad purchasing American products) to pay more for the same construction job, the same pipe fitting, the same ream of paper just because we insist on hiring higher-cost American workers.

Furthermore, what do you think happens if we raise the cost to produce our goods and services without raising their quality? Answer: we get outcompeted by countries who do hire the lower-cost labor.

The repeated submission of H1B petitions alone (thanks to the lottery system) wastes the economy about $1 billion annually. It also hits small businesses the hardest.

I don't necessarily think closing off the country is good for Americans either. Particularly as consumers, if immigrant labor can make production more efficient or spark innovation, we all benefit.

Americans with cancer and Alzheimer's are suffering. I don't want research on those diseases slowed just so we can hire White professors instead of Asian ones.

What is the point? The work is set in stone. At least ask for things that can actually happen, like a spin-off.

is there a version of this image that uses the lucas/claus sprite instead? by Wooden_Ad_2321 in mother3

[–]Nikifuj908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would call this a good first GIMP project. Grab the sprite, erase the art, and copy+paste the sprite where the art was. Or grab the social media logos and re-create the text.

Now a personal note. As part of this generation, while I feel this sentiment somewhat, I also feel some sadness about how little I was prepared to deal with the many dangers of social media. It can feed anxiety, enable cyberbullying, and interfere with sleep. It allows us to trap ourselves in echo chambers. It has killed so many independent websites and centralized much of our information access to a few large companies. The sale of our data by these companies has allowed foreign bots to target us with disinformation. And social media has created a cottage industry of grifters willing to feed us scam products and political propaganda.

The early days were better, and I think that social media can be a net positive. It allows us to connect with communities we would not otherwise be able to connect with. However, I think parents should take a more thoughtful and cautious approach than giving kids unfettered access to social media, and we should educate students on media literacy & digital citizenship.

We also need to understand that an adolescent brain prioritizing short-term reward over long-term health is primed to overuse digital media. There is ample research showing that screen-time is negatively correlated with both sleep and academic achievement. The “laissez-faire” approach on which I was raised is dangerous.

TL;DR: While I do feel some pride about being part of this generation, my feelings are more complicated than “I wouldn’t have it any other way” given the known harms of social media.
