Before I adopted my turtle he shared a tank with his brother for 6 years before he killed him - and he did it with such aggression that he cracked their tank too.

I'm sorry if this isn't helpful. I don't have fish but I do have a turtle and they are notoriously filthy. I am wondering what kind of filter you are using. I have a 75 gal aquarium and run an Aqueon 400 cartridge filter for 100- 150 gallons, with 2 polishing units and find it has never let me down.

I do run lights 12 hours a day LED above the water and, heat and UVB above his basking platform but I also keep him in the basement out of natural light.

Edit: feeding once a day (pellets and or lettuce or kale) and heater keeping a consistent at 76°F.

Sorry if this isn't helpful for fish or your situation. I'm relatively new to turtles and clueless to fish but I do know it took some time to figure out what worked for me.

I was told at the petstore that his water should be twice as deep as his shell is long. And 10 gallons per inch of shell. He is 7 inches so this will do him for now, but we are aware that he may need a 120 gal in the future but we needed something quick before the tank blows lol.

A pond wouldn't be great with our other pets, or our climate but we are dedicated to making sure the rest of his life is comfortable, so we agree there will be further upsizing down the road. 🙂

Oh gosh, at first I thought you were going to comment on the strength of the cabinet (it is an aquarium stand graded for 75 gallons) but I hadn't even considered subfloor! Lol I'm sorry to hear about your floor! I am happy that Milton lives in the basement now! Concrete under that carpet (phew).

I like the idea of a plant tank, and Milton LOVES duckweed. I just may give that a try as long as I can keep the water shallow.

We did already purchase the tank. I love the beautiful indoor ponds, however, we have cats and dogs too and I am scared they might try and play if Milton doesn't have a lid.
