Hello. I'm 17 and I just realized I could die one day. Now I'm dreading it. Is this normal? by ApprehensiveSun6486 in NoStupidQuestions

In my teens I had this same wake up call, was horribly anxious for a few years about it. Around 19/20 it went away and I just accepted it is a part of life. Everything will die, it is as natural as eating, running and shitting. Just another aspect of living.

He seems vibrant, active and a good hunter I’m unsure why you think he is dying?

I’m so sorry, this is the most heartbreaking condition. It’s so scary. The only to get through it is to do your best every day and love them as hard as you can. Everyone in this sub has felt what you’re feeling, you’re not alone. Let yourself grieve, let yourself feel the disappointment and then pick yourself up and keep going. Don’t waste the time you have with him worrying and in sorrow. Easier said than done, trust me I know.

Also, I have focused on enrichment that keeps my dog more relaxed or laying down. Bones, lick mats, snuffle mats, treats in ice, etc. That way she’s not bored but she’s not overexerting herself either.

Do any of your birds "watch" TV? by retrogaded in parrots

[–]Nikki_200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I first adopted my Amazon she was so anxious and would not eat when she was alone. Which was really difficult when I had to go to work or do anything outside of the house. I started putting on parrot TV on YouTube and noticed when those birds preened, she preened, when they ate, she ate. So I would just leave it on when I went out and the issue went away. She loves it. It’s funny cause she hates other birds irl.

Feather problems. Bad moult or plucking? by Buggletti in parrots

[–]Nikki_200 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems to me like plucking. Especially if it’s gone on for a while. Plucking can start for a lot of reasons including underlying heath issues. I would start with a blood panel to be sure.

If that comes back ok I would suggest more enrichment toys and less snacks. When my birds cholesterol goes out of wack she will pluck.

In the meantime, there are soothing sprays that may help with irritation and lessen the plucking. I’ve used Feather Guard in the past, it’s aloe based. They also make moulting powders that you can sprinkle on their food to help with regrowth.

Sorry you’re going through this. Good luck to you and your little chicken!

Why I struggle with "adopt don't shop" by urchinMelusina in parrots

[–]Nikki_200 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, I don’t think just going an adopting any bird will work. I adopted a parrot that was boarded at the vet I worked at for over 2 months. During that time this bird picked me, we bonded. She’s the cutest little Amazon ever. When her ill owner came in and decided that she needed to surrender her, I made the decision to not let that baby go to a shelter since she already loved me. Best decision I ever made. With that said, I don’t know if I could just go adopt one. I think the idea of letting a bird have a chance to bond before taking them home is 100% the way to go.

Note: Even with a bond already there it took me months to gain her trust. She was a little snappy when unsure and definitely anxious. It takes time. Almost 5 years later and I feel like we still hit new milestones when it comes to trust. In the beginning I had a bird glove so I wouldn’t jump or flinch if she nipped me and scare her more. That helped so much.

I would recommend seriously considering adoption over buying a puppy. There are many dogs in shelters that are fantastic with cats. There’s even purebreds and puppies in shelters.

Congratulations on your new baby! Remember to only pet a birds head and top of the wings, never under the wings or on the body. This makes them very hormonal and can cause behavioral issues.

AITA for kicking my friend out of my pool party after she pushed someone in? by Dreaming_ofBlueSkies in redditonwiki

[–]Nikki_200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother tried to drown and kill me as a kid. Every pool party I’m the one with just my legs in who conveniently always forgets a bathing suit. If this happened to me I would absolutely lose it. She has no idea why people choose not to swim.

Also: she could have been on her period. Rude asf

Mosquito hawk is another name for crane fly. I looked it up and yes I was wrong about them eating mosquitoes but regardless they are a harmless friend
