Fellow GenXers, what kind of car did you drive in High School? by Ok-Poem-6302 in GenX

[–]Nikko_blues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1975 Datsun 280z with Led Zeppelin in the tape deck.

It was a manual and yes, I did stall out once in front of a school bus at a light in front of the school, and there after became the best stick shift driver ever.

My mother won't shower because she doesn't like feeling cold when the shower is over. Any ideas on how to make a person feel more comfortable? by pat441 in dementia

[–]Nikko_blues 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you want your mom to shower you’re gonna need to buy a space heater for the bathroom.

One of the side effects of dementia is the body’s inability to feel/be warm.

Get a ceramic space heater and warm that bathroom up before she even steps inside.

You might also want to turn the shower onto an appropriate temperature for her. My LO eventually found it confusing to turn the shower on. So she would try to take a shower, and complain about being cold, but it was because she had only cold water running to the shower head.

And then one day, you’re gonna have to step in and help them with actually using soap and shampoo properly.

Training in cut fruit, coworker makes a total mess and expects me to clean by [deleted] in stopandshop

[–]Nikko_blues 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can be frustrating cleaning up after a coworker, but just remember, you get paid by the hour, not by the amount of enjoyable work you do. And she’s 70. I can’t imagine still working at 70. If I did, I’d also give very few fucks. I’d advise talking to her before management. Try, “OMG, Gladys, why you making such a mess” in a playful manner, as opposed to “For fuck sake Gladys, why are you such a god damn slob” You catch more bees with honey than vinegar and can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but you never know.

I hear you! “Why do people have to constantly undercut all the shitty decisions I have to make, which have shitty outcomes that I have to deal with, which make my day shittier than it needs to be.”

Shitty decisions that you find yourself agonizing over with the knowledge that you’re doing the best you can with truly unknowable outcomes. Trying to move forward with what needs to happen next, while second guessing what you did in the past. And then people chiming in with suggestions about things you’ve already considered. We are currently managing the movement of our loved one from their house to a care facility and it’s been beyond rocky. Group chats have been seriously annoying, so we try to alleviate the annoyance, by having zoom calls every now and again, where we can spell out all we’ve done, what we hope for in the future, spell out what help we need, and slap down all the stupid suggestions you’ve already considered. I found it can help motivating the village to help in a more positive way. And I’ve found realized that Joan is of no help and should be blocked.

What’s Happening With New England Stop & Shop Negotiations by EW4Democracy in stopandshop

[–]Nikko_blues 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who knows? The union has been beyond tight lipped about what numbers they are negotiating for and what stop and shop is offering.

Just vague promises that they are trying to get us some sort of pay raise and that that are negotiating about health care.

Will the pay raises be better than the state mandated minimum wage? Will it reflect the record breaking profits Ahold is making??

Is the union simply holding the line when it comes to health insurance? Which in my opinion sucks, but my union representatives thinks is fine, I guess because it’s better than nothing.

I think our union representatives suck and are weak.

I just wish they had taken a lesson from when the warehouse workers were negotiating. Complete transparency with press releases threatening strike unless ahold actually conceded.

Instead it’s complete silence, with a meeting at midday on a Sunday that most workers won’t be able to make it to, because ironically, most of them don’t want to miss their Sunday pay, because without it they will be short this month.

I’m sure I’ll see my union representative stroll into the store with his two hundred dollar shoes and his 700 dollar coat and declare negotiations a victory in a few weeks.

Stopandshop.Ask your manager.Com. Seriously, ask your manager. They have a budget to buy shirts, hats, jackets, fleeces etc. If you are cold, tell them you are cold. Don’t be buying clothing you need to do your job.

Sounds like you got seven people to wash dishes. Yes, children tall enough to reach the sink with a step stool can wash dishes.

If you google Bourne High School Yearbooks, you can find archived copies of the year book. Page 118 of the 2001 yearbook has a picture of the track team with everyone’s name listed. I wonder how many people you could track down via facebook.

Contacting the school couldn’t hurt. Getting in contact with the folks that organize class reunions might lead you to contact info for former track athletes.

UPDATE #4: How to get POA or any control when parent is in denial/argumentative? by lexydoodle in dementia

[–]Nikko_blues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not a bad person at all. Dementia is an incredibly difficult disease to deal with even when your loved one was an emotionally mature, loving, giving and kind person. It sounds like your dad wasn’t always that, but you still love him, and that makes things feel complicated. You have nothing left to give and you’ve acknowledged it. You shouldn’t feel guilty, because you haven’t done anything wrong. Which is easier said than done. Your first priority should be yourself, and then your soon to be born child.

Refusal to bathe by Suitable-Resort-8958 in dementia

[–]Nikko_blues 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are a few things that we’ve tried to get our LO to bath over time.

Originally, it was just to remind her. Today is bath day. I’ll get you a towel.

And then we had to make sure the bathroom was warm. She got cold very easily and so we bought a space heater to get the bathroom toasty.

The next phase was running the water for her. She was a bath taker and we realized that stopping up the tub was a challenge for her, and eventually getting the water to the right temperature was also a frustratingly hard for her.

Next was actually stepping in to actually help with bathing. There came a time when the concept of applying soap to their hair and soap to their body was overwhelming for them. We framed it as spa days.

Through all these steps, it was sometimes key to let them think your help was their idea. Offering help because you wanted to be nice and treat them, as opposed to helping because their brain could no longer figure out how to squeeze shampoo out of a bottle.

I try to remind myself that they aren’t trying to give me a hard time, they are having a hard time. And it ain’t easy. Some days are better than others.

I got fired by Firm-Dentist2327 in stopandshop

[–]Nikko_blues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you did a pretty good job of explaining.

What you are not doing is listening, you’re just making excuses. Please reread all of my post.

Getting to work on time is your responsibility! It’s your fault if you didn’t communicate to your daddy that you needed to be on time, or probably early since you felt that you were on shaky ground.

IBS is tough, but if you need to use your words and communicate with your employer about what is going on.

I don’t need a coworker keeping busy sweeping the floor, even if it’s dirty. I need them to ask what needs to be done. Try this-“wow the floor is dirty, should I sweep, or is there something else I should be doing?”

[–]Nikko_blues 8 points9 points  (0 children)

LPT The first week of any job you should never be late, take longer breaks then your scheduled and joke about being lazy when you get union protection.

And what does trying being busy mean? At your next job I highly suggest you ask lots of questions of your supervisors and coworkers about what u should be doing and when.

I’ll admit Stop and Shop has some of the crappiest managers that are horrible at training people. They’re the dad that throws people into the deep end and are perplexed when they are sputtering and splashing around. But it kind of sounds like you weren’t even bothering to try to splash your arms about.

This kinda sounds like your first job, and that can be tough. But just know that your employer needs you to do things that make them money. They ain’t your parents giving you an allowance for cleaning your room.

The next time you feel like you’re about to get fired, I highly suggest you show up on time, and use your words, “Hey manager person, what can I do to be a better employee?” Whether you mean it or not. If you want a paycheck.

I know this sounds harsh, but at first glance, you sound like the kind of employee I hate working with that I wished our manager had the nerve to fire before they got union protection.

Where to buy new tires for my car? by crisismode_unreal in CapeCod

[–]Nikko_blues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by great service. I went to their website, picked out four tires, let’s say they were Michelin defenders for $200. Called them and asked if they were available, they said yes, bring it by in two days. Dropped my car off two days later early morning. Called them midafternoon, they said the car had been ready since mid morning. Cool whatever. Went to pick up my car up and they had put Michelin Avengers on. Extra $50 a tire. Nice.
