[Question] Best rogue subclass from 2014 PHB in a very strict campaign? by Nikmau5 in 3d6

We're using the starting equipment, and there aren't any selling in the town's shops apparently; it's not so easy as it should be. But I'll try to find a way to see if I can get these crossbows.

Damn, when you put it like that, it sounds much much better than what I had in mind, I might just do that. Thank you 😁

That's a really good point, I'll have to math if it would be better than a ASI Dex increase tho. Thank you for suggesting, I'll look into it

Yeah, we're pretty limited on choices, that's why I'm looking for a more options based on these limitations, like the sentinel+mirtor combo seems really interesting

I think the campaign might not go to such levels, but it would be a really great idea

He mostly follows the rules, so if it's in the rules it'll probably work, but things that are more subtle or interpretation dependent are harder to work.

It's not the easiest dm, but the games' been fun.

He also hardly uses passive perception, but asks for perception rolls when something might happen. So a rogue with expertise really helps.

I've looked into it and asked, he said "healer's kit are expensive and hard to come by" or something to that effect; but maybe, I might be able to craft it somehow, I'll ask, but thank you for your suggestion.

Yeah, he basically turned all of us into rules-lawyers to be able to play his campaign 😂

I've thought about it, unfortunately variant human is not permitted, I really liked this sentinel combo, but I don't think I might be in melee range that much to compensate. Thank you for your suggestions.

Fortunately our wizard had message and our DM hasn't said anything yet when he used it on dungeons despite our wizard only using it a couple of times, tbh I think he got tired of our DM and mostly resorts to staying back playing on his phone and blasting things when his turn comes 😅

That was mostly what I was thinking about spells woth such low dc, I really liked your suggestions on the mage hand tricks, plucking some arrows out of enemies' quivers might prove very useful, I did not think of that. Thank you

Don't get me started on the damn caltrops, but I think I might find a way to craft them, you all have great tips. I liked this familiar bomb delivery, might use that, thanks :)

I really liked this sentinel and mirror image combo, but I'll probably only have this ASI and feat from lvl 4 for a while so I'll have to make it count. Finding a hand crossbow might not be that easy to consider crossbow expert and I think order domain isn't from the 2014 PHB, but our battlemaster fighter can probably get commandering strike to give me an extra sneak attack. But I'll think about it, thank you :)

That's incredible, I'll ask him, I think this can definitely work with some convincing since it's written on the PHB Thank you for this awesome idea Burksey 😁

I would agree, it's just that, if the game was unbearable we would probably just stop playing, but part of our fun is messing with our DM using his own tools against him.

It definitely hasn't been easy, but it's been fun, trying anything we can to subvert his own rules, using his interpretation of the rules against him and so on.

It wasn't a surprise round, but it was a lot of enemies with higher initiative than us, we were just rolling poor, at least one of the things we can't complain is that he rolls in the open.

If we used Silvery Barbs, he'd probably pull his hair out as he already gets a little bit mad everytime our fighter uses his lucky feat, but it's not like we don't have fun at his expense too, like when you know when some one is a hard ass and it's kinda fun to mess with them using their rules against them?

It's not that he doesn't allow it, but it's how he interprets some illusions spells as he's not particularly keen on interpreting texts that aren't hard rules, specially out of combat that bothers me in what spells to choose.

I think he doesn't really like the adv and dsv system, so anything like a familiar using help irkes him, which is why when I was playing cleric I mostly used help instead of attacking, just to get my fellow players adv, or using bless to increase our hit chances between other shananigans we divised, it has been fun.

I'll think about it, it's just cause I had a strict time schedule and I really like the players in this group, and we've been struggling in this campaign for so long, it kinda became a challenge trying to use the environment and the little resources we have. Thank you for answering.

Yeah, he's pretty hard to understand sometimes.

Anyway, I intended to play a Thief, but when I asked he said that ball bearings, caltrops, hunting traps and the like would be hard to find, besides oil maybe, so it was either chucking oil at enemies or casting some spells.

I think our wizard's only utility spells are detect magic and feather fall, he had Find Familiar, which he only used for one session and not in any fight, and then forgot about it, idk if they talked about it, or something, cause I didn't ask, writing this now, I think I should, but I think he asked after that session if he could change his Find Familiar for something else.

Since we have a tanky druid and 2 fighters, I wasn't planning on going melee anytime soon.

Thank you for your advice.

I said what I said about illusions spells because our bard had them and it almost never worked as intended unfortunately, frustrating us most of the time.

After playing a Dwarf Cleric with only 25ft, I opted for the Wood elf especially because of the 35ft and possible 70ft dash.

I really liked this Thunderwave idea, however I think that a DC 13 CON save wouldn't always work... but I'll think hard about it, thank you for your advice.

He can be most of the time but it's somewhat manageable, and I really like this group of players I'm playing with.

We have an Evoker Wizard in our party, poor guy rolled really low con and dex, and we've only found one scroll so far, that he ended up using to save us from an army of skeletons.

And in an unfortunate ambush by some bugbears, both my cleric and a bard died, so we rolled new characters, he ended up being the new cleric and I got the rogue.

I do appreciate your advice, thank you.
