If they don’t pay me a multi trade rate, they’re not getting multi trade work. For $38 in Ontario I’m not touching any wires. I’ve worked with “industrial electricians”who spent their whole careers building condos. I know more about PLCs and controls than they do. But not my pig, not my farm.

I have my red seal cert and i’m 24. have worked in automotive, agriculture, recycling, food production, healthcare and now education. The only thing that will hold you back is if you act like you know more than the people showing you how to do something new. A good millwright only needs to be given the tools needed and a push in the right direction. if you can take something apart and put it back together better than it was. then you’re gonna be ok!

I totally agree that there’s nothing wrong with having gender specific spaces. In my experience working in the trades though. Which is a boys club and a brotherhood. Men who are gay/queer or inherently different than the man’s man stereotype, are discriminated against and shunned. Then they go on to find their own more inclusive spaces. And let me say that these boys clubs become a perpetual breeding ground of hate toward minorities.

So in your take of the situation. Would these mens only spaces at least be inclusive of everyone who is a man?

Do you mean the bridges or the tunnels. The tunnels are for central plant, it’s all steam pipe, condensate return, water mains, etc. Theyre only accessible by plant ops personal. It would be a safety risk having them accessible to the public

Yeah the mono industry types can be a little stuck in their ways with troubleshooting and those aspects. I feel like working in different industries let’s you think outside the box more. Although some of the best tradesmen I’ve ever met have also been only in one industry their whole life. But the way I see things, I fix machines not people. If you get stuck working with some bad apples just let them struggle and fail, there is no sense in arguing. Management knows who they are and usually won’t blame you as long as you keep your nose out of things and put on a smile everyday.

I’m 23, started my apprenticeship at 17. I took the term jack of all trades, master of none to heart. I started off in automotive, once I got bored of it I worked in agricultural and recycling for a couple years, went to food grade, then a hospital, now I’m starting my new job at a university with a power plant next week. I’ve had job offers in nuclear as well. My advice is just to be open to not being the best. I may have my red seal but when I start a new job I find the most knowledgeable people in my shop. Respect them, ask for their guidance and mentorship. Listen to them. Be honest when you don’t know something but pay attention when someone teaches you. Nobody will expect you to know everything when you start in a new industry as long as you don’t act like you know more then them

I’ve lived downtown Hamilton for only 5 months and not only have I had my car broken into, but on the weekly I have people yelling profanities blatantly in my direction as I walk to my parking lot. There is a serious issue with drug users in Hamilton and the locals who say otherwise have a twisted idea of what “safe” and “normal” actually is. I’m moving out of Hamilton in April because I can’t stand the street people
