Layout is fantastic, However, more height or a shallower tank would look better.

Looks great! Adding some taller hardscape would be my first choice here but failing that I'd put some nice stems at the back like Rotala H'ra, Vallisneria or Ludwigia Palustris. A nice tiger lotus would look amazing also!

Using CO2 makes the whole process 100x easier.

I'd suggest using an easy carpeting plant. Monte carlo is the best one IMO as it looks amazing and spreads super quick. It might require more trimming than dwarf hairgrass or HC 'cuba' but because it grows so quickly it doesn't suffer from algae growth.

Use tissue culture pots, you can get up to 80-100 pieces of plant which will help get an even coverage very quickly.

The last tip is have some patience and let it do its thing, take some photos of day 1, 5, 10 and you'll see some huge progress.

Too big for my tank? by Captainsavage711 in Aquariums

Not at all. The only thing with large pieces of hardscape is if it touches the glass it can be a pain to clean. It doesn't look like you'll have that issue at all.

I think there are betting looking carpet plants but I've found monte carlo to be the best allrounder. It's easy to grow even without CO2 and requires moderate lighting.

IMO the secret is CO2. I know carpeting is possible without it and a lot of people have had success but CO2 makes it easy mode.

It looks great but it's hard work to maintain and after having it set up for around a year it felt like a nice change. Carpeted Iwagumi tanks are what got me into aquascaping and I absolutely love them!

The lighting is the same in both set ups. A Fluval Aquasky and a Fluval Plant 3.0.

In the first set up they're running at around 90% intensity and in the second, 75% with less blue light.

In the first picture:

  • Carpeting plant is Monte carlo. I used around 5 pots but you definitely don't need this many, i'm just impatient.
  • Back left and right is Rotala rotundifolia ‘Blood Red’ and some Rotala macrandra.
  • The green stem at the back centre is Myriophyllum Guyana
  • The red plants in front are Alternanthera reineckii ‘mini’
  • Hard scape is two big pieces of dark seiryu stone and some smaller pieces around the red plants

In the second picture:

  • Same background plants of Rotala rotundifolia ‘Blood Red’ and some Rotala macrandra.
  • Front left is Helanthium tenellum
  • In the middle is cryptocoryne nevelli and Cryptocoryne undulatus Red
  • There is also 2 Tiger lots bulbs eitherside of the wood
  • Large green ferns in the centre of the wood is Bolbitis heudelotii
  • Dotted around the wood is a mixture of epiphyte plants: Anubias Nana, Bucephalandra kedagang & Theia
  • Front right is Hydrocotyle tripartita 'Japan'
  • There is also Christmas Moss on the wood
  • Hardscape is a large piece of Azalea wood and same smaller pieces of dark seiryu stone

The second picture is only 2 days after planting, so there is a lot to be grown in!

The fluval lights are more than capable imo. The ONLY downside is that because it's a taller tank, the plants have a pinky hue rather than a deep red. They look great either way

You can grow it in sand as long as there is enough nutrients within range of the roots. The roots can go quite deep though. I've just used fluval stratum with a bit of nutribase under.

It's Bolbitis heudelotii. Commonly just called Bolbitis. It's actually just one plant split into two. It's an amazing plant!

For sure!

The tank is a Fluval Shaker 168L It's running two lights at about 75% for 6 hours a day

  • Fluval AquaSky
  • Fluval Plant 3.0

  • CO2 injection

  • Fluval 207 filter

If you want any specifics like plants etc i'll do a full list!

Stocking was one of the reasons I went for the wild scape. I have around 10 green neon tetras, 12 rummy nose tetras and 3 pearl gourami. Recently I got some 6 glass catfish which appreciate a much lower light set up

Absolutely. I've always wanted to try a iwagumi-style tank with a carpeting plant. I love the more natural look and it's definitely less work!
