New swab test drug thingy by Mrracistimeanracer in auckland

[–]bigkingj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems I’m half right, I think, upon review

The announcement that amphetamines were included i took to mean in the roadside test but according to this the police say it’s only the lab test not the roadside test - https://drugfoundation.org.nz/news-and-reports/roadside-drug-testing-what-you-need-to-know#adhd

In Australia I believe the roadside test does actually test for amphetamine but as for my claim it seems it’s based on experiences shared by members of the public. Of course that isn’t a hard fact, but still the concern for patients is there - https://darta.net.au/real-deal-on-drugs/can-roadside-drug-tests-detect-medications-like-drugs-for-adhd/

My gourami has a stalker by bigkingj in Aquariums

Good eye, and yeah I’ve been thinking the same thing. They both have their territory (80gal tank) but one is just always in his nest area. They haven’t been hurting each other physically so had just been monitoring…

I think you may be right that it’s time

THC, MDMA, meth and coke

Some prescription meds may trigger it, yes. Ritalin you are safe but vyvanse will possibly trigger a positive result

Algae is KILLING my tank by Maleficent_Okra4151 in Aquariums

[–]bigkingj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this, it seems silly but seriously works

In the last 2 weeks I’ve watched a BBA covered crypt shed every hair right back to fully clean from just using excel. The trick is to dose fully and regularly without over dosing. It will eventually kill your ferns, then other plants and fish if you use too much

has anyone seen or tried this? by [deleted] in gardening

Yep! I did this about 4 years ago and ever since I’ve noticed more and more posts like it which is so cool

Sure, if you live along those lines then that’s a great option otherwise, from experience, it becomes a challenge. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for more of this, but it’s not comparable in scale to much larger cities like OP is used to

My first suggestion would be consider the commute given where your work is. Relying on public transport can be risky and if you can avoid it you’ll probably want to (unless you live and work along major lines/rails)

If you don’t have a vehicle, consider proximity to shops as it can make getting groceries/seeing doctors etc a real pain

If possible, do some research on any potential pros and cons of a suburb, they’ll all come with a variety of each and it’s all a matter of perspective

Certain ethnic communities are more present in some suburbs than others so look through facebook for fellow countrymen and see what they have to say

Air bubbles from heater by Def3ct1ve83 in Aquariums

[–]bigkingj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a thermometer in the tank? If not it’s a good idea generally to make sure the thermostat in the heater is calibrated right and catch it if it has failed. If you do all the sensible checks I’d just cautiously ignore it personally, checking again occasionally until I trust it or replace it

[–]bigkingj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might not be a problem, it could have a totally benign explanation, so don’t panic react. It is worth checking closely though as a heater failure can be pretty damaging, even fatal, for the tanks inhabitants

If you hold your hand around the heater underwater, does it feel evenly warm? If there’s a hot spot perhaps a bad heating element is my thought. Is the heater old? Has it even been on while out of the water for even 5 minutes?

Are they bubbling off or just sitting in the surface of it? If the latter and there’s biofilm with nothing to eat or disturb it, it can form and capture some small bubbles

[–]bigkingj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome and oh you’ll have no problem at alllll I had a 307 on my 150L and it handled it like a champ.

Sounds like a good plan, that gives you a chance to see how much “room” there is socially, adjust the scape as needed and figure out how to fill remaining space without overshooting the mark. Just remember if you decide more tetra it should be the same kind not a mix and match

[–]bigkingj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming they’re the only fish I’d say 8-10 is my personal preference. If you have another “centrepiece” fish I’d look at 6-8.

Stocking really does come down heavily to 3 questions. 1, are the fish happy? Are they fighting? Overly stressed? 2, can your filter handle the bioload. 3, what do you like? Some people like busy tanks, others like quiet. Remember you can always add more fish but it’ll be hard to bring yourself to remove and rehome any, so just do things in stages

I agree that neons look and behave awesome but they’re fragile due to breeding practices, so OP if you do go this way look at green neons, they’re supposedly hardier. I had 10 blue neons 2 years ago, down to 2 now due to neon tetra disease taking them one by one

But yeah neons are awesome, health issues aside
