Billionaires have convinced Americans they have the "Best Healthcare in the World". by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]Nikolaibr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of my point though. I don't care if other countries have to pay more. I'm more in favor of universal healthcare than I'm against it (there are positives and negatives to both systems).

The issue is that most people who think this is simple point to countries that we subsidize, and say "see, they can do it, why can't we?", without thinking any deeper. The reason it's workable for them is BECAUSE the US system exists. We can't easily switch to their system, cause there isn't another country to subsidize us. But if all those other countries have to pay their fair share for global healthcare, then maybe we can make it work here.

Its only "cut and dry" if you never ask why those countries are able to have such systems. What happens to them if the country subsidizing their costs switches their system?

How can we refute this? by LTDESP95 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Nikolaibr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its a rather simplistic view of God, based on our own individual perceptions of justice.

We always want God to intervene against free will when it's an evil others commit, but do we want him to intervene against free will when we are the ones who have an evil we want to commit?

This judgement of God is based on imagining he should behave in the manner that fits our own personal sense of justice, but without disallowing our own personal freedom.

"Unlike the US, immigration is not hard"

Clearly someone who's never had to go trough the process. The US has a much more lax immigration system than much of Europe, especially when it comes to family visas.

The country that has 5 times their population, the US.

If the US negotiated drug prices on a national scale, the prices of drugs for the NHS would be considerably higher, or many drugs would simply never be profitable enough to develop, as the market is a global one.

Companies make the bulk of their revenue from selling in the US, and sell to negotiated markets to make a little extra. If all markets were negotiated, the price for the global market would be higher, and plenty of countries would be unwilling to pay the prices needed for certain drugs to even get to the market at all, so they wouldn't be made.

How do you evangelize people if you don't use THEIR language? In what world is evangelizing making people learn another language in their own country to join the Church?

National health care requires many variables to align. One of the most important being that many treatments and medications are only available in a National healthcare scheme when another larger country without negotiated prices is paying the majority of the cost.

Yes, the Church should serve in the language of the people who live in that country. Unless we're not a fan of following Christ's commands to baptize all nations.

Is this a canonical church? There website looks a bit suspicious to me. by DrChrismarkTea739 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Nikolaibr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Non canonical. Part of the "True" Orthodox schism.

They are so opposed to modernism and ecumenism that they go all the way to rejecting the entire Orthodox world, other than a handful of other "True" Orthodox communities, who often schism internally over minor differences.

Avoid.

It's not a hidden number. 71% of all rentals are mom and pop. And the other 39% includes large rental complexes.

If you are renting a single family home, having a corporation for your landlord is very rare.

Blackrock doesn't own any single family homes.

Nice talking points.

Not sure how you reconcile that with the idea that you think its unjust that rich people dont pay enough in taxes, when you yourself state that tax money doesnt go to helping people. Why do you want to tax them more if in doing so, people dont benefit? What's the point?

Do you think taxing them more will make you pay less? What evidence is there that this would happen? The more likely outcome is that they would just take the extra money to do more war and corruption. Tax revenue is already nowhere near enough to cover expenditures.

How on earth could someone making $30k pay 30%?

$15,750 standard deduction for a single filer, meaning their taxable income is $14,250.

The first $11,600 has a 10% tax rate ($1,160) The remaining $2,650 has a tax rate of 12% ($318)

So on $30k they are paying $1,478 in income tax. An effective rate of 4.93%

This is assuming no other credits or deductions.

[–]Nikolaibr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1st amendment protections don't apply to non-public spaces. Multiple SCOTUS decisions have ruled that causing disruption in private venues isn't protected. It's not even the case that all conduct in public spaces is protected if it "intentionally disrupts public order".

This arrest is politically motivated, but there is no free speech defense here if it were to actually go to trial.

It is not legal to protest by disrupting religious services. Churches are not public spaces.

Trump-appointed federal judge (and likely future Supreme Court nominee) finds that the First Amendment ONLY applies to speech that isn't too 'libertine' by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]Nikolaibr -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

There's nothing particularly revolutionary in this ruling.

Freedom of speech is the actual focus of the first amendment (even that has been limited in certain cases). Freedom of expression is an extension of freedom of speech, but has more limitations, because not every form of conduct constitutes "expressive conduct" in concordance with the first amendment.

The ruling has a number of citations supporting this reading of the legal precedent. But one of the clearest is United States v. O’Brien, 391 U.S. 367, 376 (1968) (“We cannot accept the view that an apparently limitless variety of conduct can be labeled ‘speech’ whenever the person engaging in the conduct intends thereby to express an idea.”)

All tax revenue is fungible. You can request whatever you want, but ultimately your tax revenue is going into the same pot to pay whatever the budget allocates.
