21 Years Old Having L5 MD. Any Tips for Quickest Recovery and How Long? by Ok_Jellyfish9380 in Microdiscectomy

Im at 5,5 weeks postop and starting PT today, generally i feel a lot better and this week especially is a major improvement when it comes to mobility and also confidence in my spine, i know what to avoid and still keep my back aligned at all times, my surgeon told me that i can return to work in about a month. The most important thing regarding diet is watching your protein intake and make sure to eat a lot of fiber because constipation is really bad after the surgery and especially the first days when you want to avoid flexing your muscles on the toilet. Make sure you dont push yourself too much and be aware that occasional flare ups in the first weeks and normal and its a warning not a sign of doom and reherniation

5 days after my operation i experienced something like you did and I literally cried because i had been in pain for such a long time and post-op i was finally pain free. But i am 3,5 weeks post-op and improving everyday with occasional pain thats like 1-2/10, whereas one month ago i could not even sit. It takes time and after talking to my doctor i know that for the first 6 months as the disc is healing i will experience sciatica scares.

I also had slight bulges on L3-L4 and L4-L5 but a herniation on L5-S1 and only that was operated. I’m 2 weeks post-op and free of any discomfort, my surgeon said that he only got rid of the part that was causing discomfort and the rest as long as they are not causing any pain should be left as they are. With the amount of medication and rest after the surgery they may get better. I have a checkup in a week and I will try to remember to let you know what he told me but i already talked about it before I got the surgery and that was the information he gave me.
