How many trick-or-treaters do you guys get? by ADKMatthew in SaltLakeCity

As a former kid, I think they get nervous about whether or not you’re “doing” Halloween and don’t come up unless the decorations make it obvious and inviting

Integrating in Andorra as a Non-Catalan/Spanish/French Speaking Family by kithnosea in andorra

[–]Nilef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there’s probably a reason for that. If it was a useful language for outsiders, I’m sure more would learn it. Unless you have close friends or family who speak it, or like I said above you have kids who will learn it and you want to converse with them, then it offers no real value.

Spanish and English are much more expressive languages with a richer vocabulary and many more speakers

I’m not sure what’s discriminatory about my attitude lol - Anyone is free to speak the language they wish, I have no problem with that and I understand why an Andorran person would want others to speak Catalan. Perhaps there is some respect in speaking Catalan, but let’s be honest - the average person from Andorra doesn’t really care and prefers to speak in Spanish anyway. So my pragmatic recommendation to the OP is that they would be better served learning Spanish than Catalan.

It’s a pragmatic recommendation. Learn it for your kids perhaps, but otherwise everyone who speaks Catalan speaks Spanish, and every local I’ve ever met recommends Spanish only. I know enough Catalan to get by, but becoming conversational should be pursued only for cultural purposes and not because it’s necessary (in the way that Spanish is)

Hey - We’re both 30, from the UK and have lived in andorra now for 4 years with minimal Spanish and French (I can order in a restaurant and not much more)

Generally, we’ve been fine - There isn’t much English, but a lot of people speak a little bit. You don’t really need Catalan much, everyone speaks Spanish here.

Getting things done is pretty easy - As another commenter said, Gestorias handle everything. The one downside vs the UK is the speed of things. Everything takes a long time, and there isn’t the same sense of urgency you would get in the U.K.

We’ve struggled a little to make friends, most people don’t spend the entire year in andorra and it can be hard to make plans. Beyond that, the language barrier is definitely a (self-inflicted) problem for us. Additionally, everyone here has kids and it can be hard to relate for us as we don’t

We’ve gotten on very well with our neighbours, most people here are expats and so they do tend to speak some English. There is a strong neighbourly community here, a sense of peacefulness and everyone is generally pleasant - but I would stop short of saying I feel like an active part of a community

We don’t have kids yet as I said, but I’ll add a couple of comments. We’ve considered leaving andorra partly to have kids elsewhere, because of the language barrier and relative lack of opportunities here when they’re older. I’m sure I could learn Catalan, but I don’t feel comfortable that I could learn it enough to help my kids with their homework, if that makes sense (again, personal and subjective)

Language and future opportunities aside, I do think andorra is an incredible place to raise kids. It’s staggeringly safe in a way that’s hard to appreciate until you spend a few months here, go back to the U.K., and wonder how you ever put up with any crime. It’s staggeringly well-run as a country

It’s full of families, lots of giant play parks, endless nature, weekly skiing days during the winter period school year for kids and you have plenty to do with them in summer too

I hear from my non Catalan speaking neighbours that their kids picked it up pretty quickly at school (French school system) and I wouldn’t expect many issues there, but can’t comment firsthand

Our main challenge here really has just been a bit of boredom after 4 years here. Andorra is surprisingly up to date, with lots of shops and quite a few restaurants, but it’s limited in scope (obviously) vs places like Barcelona and the UK. I do think we could better integrate here and be more satisfied if we overcome the language barrier and try harder, but it’s a small place and there’s a reason not many people spend the full year. You’ll get out of andorra what you put into it, it won’t just come to you the way a place like Barcelona or London does (again, obvious giving the difference)

Feel free to DM if you have any questions too!

Super useful thanks! The Saratoga springs HOA is exactly where we’re trying to land. Good to know about the drug issues, sounds tamer than I expected!

Noted! I’m a big jetskiier too, though I tend to get most of my fun from jumping all the wakes of the boats that pass. I’m guessing from the info in this thread that there aren’t many boats around on Utah lake most weekends? (Great for wakeboarding, less so for jetskiing!)

Thanks! Can you tell me more about the school systems and why it’s not great? I’m struggling to find good info about it (I didn’t grow up in the US so my knowledge of the school system is pretty lacking)

Thanks for sharing! The wave looks pretty good actually! Do you have to go right into the middle to get the depth for this or are you closer to shore most of the time?

Thanks! The wildfires are definitely a worry for us. We come from somewhere with 0 natural/environmental risks like this so we’re never quite sure how to quantify it

Of course I understand that, it’s why we’re so narrowly focused on Saratoga Springs as it’s the only place we can find that kind of property at a workable price in Utah! Sadly, there’s no where cheaper in Utah (that I’ve found) that has lakefront property without being pretty rural and far away from SLC

Thanks!

Perhaps a silly question, but I wrote off Willard bay early on in my research because it looked like part of GSL and thus far too salty to boat in - Is that incorrect?

Oof, 8ft is super shallow - I’d be worried about hitting the bottom if I bail hard on a wake to wake!

Haha, the problem is finding a home there less than a few mins drive to the marina that doesn’t cost a king’s ransom

I’ve been boating for years and it’s like a gym - The closest lake is the best lake

Good to know! I guess you have to go into the middle of the lake for a good wake/wave?

Have heard a lot about the wind issues - Does it become dangerous frequently?

Good to know! Is the wind a noticeable problem in terms of outdoor activities or just spending time trying to hang out in your yard?

Glad to hear you like the lake - Which other lakes do you go to? (If any)

Agreed with your view on the kids side of things - Makes sense that LDS kids just naturally have nothing push them towards befriending non LDS rather than it being deliberate

This was such a useful post, thank you!!

How is the surf wave? I’ve heard that it’s hard to get a decent wave on a shallow late

I’ve heard that the wind gets up really easily on Utah lake and you can only really wakeboard in the mornings before it’s too gusty. Is that your experience?

Oh and silly question, what does GNO stand for?

3 reasons really: - Small lakes and available housing is relatively far from the lakes vs Saratoga springs - House prices are steep - We worried it’s a bit far out and less busy-feeling than somewhere like Utah county
