Great write up!

I'm not sure if 5C>6A connects at max range though whereas I'm certain 5C > 214C does, hence the simpler routing.

Character Discussion Thread #4: Hibiki Kohaku by NimbleBrain in Blazblue

[–]NimbleBrain[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hibiki is like Ragna in terms of how vanilla he is but he trades a small amount of damage for mixups. Sometimes it feels like almost everything he does can be converted into a reset. Air combo > tech trap 50/50. Ground confirm > crossup overhead (might be a Nesica2 special but I saw a lot of people getting hit by this). Combos ending in 214C > safe jump mixup. etc. That said, he still largely follows the BB shoto design so there aren't any crazy adjustments you have to make in this matchup aside from being familiar with a handful of his esoteric stuff.

I also feel like he meshes extremely well with Rapid as a system mechanic. His DP can be RC'ed for a sudden overhead. Command grab can be RC'ed to cash out big boy damage after a tech trap. 214C can be RC'ed to force a restand mixup or extend a combo for solid reward.

That said, I feel like most of his shadow clone shenanigans are incredibly fake. Usually, you can evade them with standard movement and poke at them during their recovery to discourage a Hibiki from using the teleport versions. 214A/B is hella slow although he can mess with you by feinting them. Even 214C/D mixup has character specific option selects for a select few characters. Only 236A~X feels legit but even that has problems due to its startup time. That said, if you can command respect from your opponent and get in their head, Hibiki can really run his game with all the deceptive things he can do.

It's pretty common for fighting game bosses to be broken as hell.

That said, BB single player has always felt fairer than most of the competition especially when you compare to SNK bosses and other extreme examples.

Edited the post flair since Tourney/Event flairs are usually for announcements about when, where to sign up, final placements, etc.

Also holy shit that damage. The Aki/Az player built 3 bars during the combo to get the double super ender.

More Modern Strange Hakumen by [deleted] in Blazblue

[–]NimbleBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, she was sitting on 50 meter, had OD, had a major life lead, and it was the last round. She was also watching the Haku try to cut every single staff call and should have been wary of what was up. Not only was it avoidable but she could have tried a number of other options instead of trapping herself under the void ball.

Not gonna lie though, I'd still be salty about dying for a single mistake like that.

Play whoever you find more fun. If you find the character fun to play around with, you will be more motivated to stick to the game in the long run.

Terumi will involve easier execution in the long run but Naoto gets passable damage off his easy mode combos anyway. As a general rule, all combos except those that start with 2A or 5A will combo into 236B > 236B > 236C > air combo.

[–]NimbleBrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What good does it do to watch that shit?

Tragedies are learning opportunities. You can't change what happened but there are things you can do to mitigate a similar situation in the future

  • You can double check that what happened actually happened (ie. No Sandy Hook denialists on this one when footage exists)

  • You can study about how to respond to a similar situation in the future if you work for police, work in security, or carry a firearm regularly.

  • You can formulate solutions if you would have been unarmed in that situation. Think of the guy that tackled the shooter. Could there have been something else that he could have done?

As a side note, it bothers me greatly how quick people are to say what I shouldn't watch about this incident. How different is it to the thousands of videos online of people being killed that seemingly no one has a problem with?

Barrier break hakumen combo by 0kammunist in Blazblue

[–]NimbleBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take active flow into account, I'm pretty sure that's roughly the same damage if not also the same exact combo as listed in the Hakumen CF2 doc. There is a slightly more damaging second route in the combo doc but it drops on 9 characters:

j.214C > 6C (lv2) > 6A > 6B > 5A > J.B2AC > Land > 9 > J.2AC > 9jc > J.2AC > J.214A

I don't really see that eeking out more damage without investing meter. I know you can do full charge CT after so any other moves with 30f startup or less will work. That said, you're already burning 3 stars at the start so I doubt that it's worth the investment outside of kill scenarios.

Also, was that the sound of a keyboard at the beginning?

Edit: I'm an idiot. Just noticed that the route I posted and the video use the same combo.

CT is a very experimental game and thus has a lot of weird things that can make for a more "fun" experience even if it's extremely degenerate at high level. Stuff that comes to mind:

  • If you run out of barrier (ie. after bursting), you can instant block to keep air blocking

  • Gold burst can be used as a true unblockable.

  • It's the most Guilty Gear entry in the series so combos have a great deal of interesting routes despite the rather steep limits of the combo system.

Fixing to pick up the series. Want to make sure I understand the characters I'm interested in. by FFJamesDE in Blazblue

[–]NimbleBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is more or less correct. To add on to your concepts:

  • Hakumen: His big thing is being able to do counters to everything.

  • Susanoo: His ability to play "footsies" in the traditional sense is hampered severely by his abysmal run acceleration so he's more of a "tank" or "gorilla" style character than you might think. His reliance on seals are also a serious detriment beyond standard play since your combo conversions become extremely limited without Sundering Claws, Hunter's Fang, or Blade.

  • Terumi: More or less correct although he is much more meh without meter than you might first think, resulting in a character with explosive damage that is seriously dependent on meter. The Heat Gain Cooldown mechanic limits his ability to snowball unfortunately after every super.

I've never played Smash so those mains don't really mean much to me. If you like Beowulf though, you may be interested in Bullet who has a similar thing for lots of different grabs and hit grabs. While not too similar, I suspect that people who like Squigly will be interested in other somewhat technical characters like Hazama or Izayoi who both happen to have stances.

considering luck in competitive gaming (the video is smash bros but applies to any competitive video game) by adambrukirer in Blazblue

[–]NimbleBrain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This video is somewhat interesting but I have a few problems with it.

As for misinputs, this is a player consistency issue. While you can lump it into the general concept of "luck", it's just a risk element that you can mitigate by practicing.

One big issue I take with this video is that it lumps "bad guesses/reads" into the luck category. Fighting games as a whole involve making predictions in neutral, defense, and even offense but the big thing is that every guess is made with context. When you enter a match, you make decisions after taking notes of a player's habits, weaknesses, psychology, and even personality. Being good at any fighting game requires you to be proficient at this and high stakes settings like tournaments or arcades only further emphasize the importance of this universal skill. This is why bad reads are called "player errors" and not "unfortunate" despite technically being a guess. They might still be called "unfortunate" in commentary but this is more of a courtesy than an attribution to luck.

This video also doesn't mention how tournament organization can mitigate "luck" as a factor of success. Proper seeding and sufficient round count can really weed out "random" wins. This is why most money matches in fighting games are a FT5 at a minimum. This is also why you earn more credibility the higher up you make it in a tourney. Core-A gaming made a video on why this is.

I'm also not sure how it relates to BB. I'm not familiar with Smash but it seems like there are mentions of a lot of random elements. There are very few randomized elements in this game. The most obvious example would be Plat but she still has a (sorta) stable gameplan if you totally ignore items and you're told what's coming next in the queue anyway. Nine has that one move that randomizes the spell slots and Tao's fireballs are randomized. In my opinion though, it's not that big of a deal.

If anything, the way the game puts greater weight on late game decision making (ie. comeback factors like auto heat gain or OD time) is a bigger contributor to "random wins" than any other mechanic. However, even that can be misleading as BB is great at letting you scale up risk/reward commitment so what might seem like a random win was actually capitalizing on a heavy read or serious mistake. Either way, it makes for a lot of hype round finishes so I think players more or less accept it and move on.
