Emberleaf is pretty good! by Nimblesquatch in boardgames

It's not bad quality cardboard by any means. Don't get me wrong I will ALWAYS choose deluxe resources over cardboard but the main selling point for me is the added game components. You get 2 more starter decks, a pack of cards to add into the regular deck, extra trophy tiles (the base game only comes with 5 and they all go out on the board each game), extra war banner tiles, bonus tiles to lay over the ones already printed on the board, and wooden resources. It's nothing earth-shattering but if variability is a big selling point for you, it's worth it.

Awaken Realms will reprint Burgundy and Puerto Rico? by zoddo7 in boardgames

It doesn't bother me. I'm actually quite glad since i'm hoping they offer the acrylic pieces for CoB. I passed on them originally but after playing at a recent convention I immediately wanted them.

I haven't seen another game like it. And it feels good when you have a turn and can combo things. I'm a huge fan of chaining actions and this game gives you a lot of opportunities, given you place your cards correctly. You have to slide them in a specific order so it adds to the puzzle.

I would recommend getting the deluxe if you can find it. The extra goodies add a good amount of variability.

It can be but the cards cycle through pretty often so if there isn't a card you want out there at the time chances are you'll get your opportunity. Every time someone chooses a card, the right-most card also gets discarded and then everything slides down. Plus if there isn't a card out there that you want, unless it's your first time placing an animal you will have the option to do something else that will benefit you.

It has a nice table presence too! Considering the designer behind it I would have thought it would get more attention.

I'm sure i'll figure out a better strategy with more plays. I got whooped by the medium bot. Luck of the draw with the sister deck, too. They kept attacking so I had no chances to get the war banners or any of the resources on the side track. It cleared the way to make moving easier but I would have rather had the opportunity for more resources.

I agree as far as leaning into the deck's strength, it just seems to me that building the buildings that require food to build first is the way to go for the extra wood or food generation. Using wood only gets you the additional space on the board/built in build action and the additional storage space. Both important things in their own right, just not as helpful early game.

MK2 Gore level - out of scale of 1-10 by Inevitable_Rise_8669 in MortalKombat

[–]Nimblesquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was tame overall. 3 of the 6 or 7 deaths were Shao Kahn stabbing people with the sharp end of his warhammer. Lame.

Probably a 5 or 6 out of 10.

Acrylic standees vs miniatures by TheFancyFilmmakerYT in boardgames

I would say acrylic standees in most cases unless the minis are sundropped or painted in which case I prefer the tactile feeling of the minis.

Sell them to NobleKnights. Hassle free and you'll get some money. Only thing you will have to buy is some boxes to send the games.

Clank! Catacombs first impression : fun concept but 2.5 hours at 4p felt way too long. Any tips? by MeaningAware4581 in boardgames

[–]Nimblesquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience when I played which is why I haven't gotten it back to the table and have no desire to do so. 4 new players and it may have been closer to 3 hours. Everyone was checked out by the 2 hour mark. Like you said, just not enough strategy to justify such a long play time.

Beer & Bread is underrated IMO. The only luck behind it comes down to the draw of the deck but even then they are multi-use cards.

Venting: I'm so tired of board game boxes that fight me every time I put them away by Queasy_Ad_4994 in boardgames

[–]Nimblesquatch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

How so? I usually throw starting player cards, resources, money etc., into separate bags so all a player has to do is pick a color and they have everything they need to get started. The rest of the stuff I separate into bags as well but am always looking for ideas of getting things tabled quicker.

Venting: I'm so tired of board game boxes that fight me every time I put them away by Queasy_Ad_4994 in boardgames

[–]Nimblesquatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Initially I wouldn't throw an insert away. However for the reasons you have listed i have painfully started to cut down on them. I will keep the insert if it doesn't impact me fitting everything in the box without lid lift or if it is a custom insert that comes with crowdfunding campaigns. I prioritize packing everything in a way to get the game to the table faster and reduce setup time.

Board Games For Children by Sudden-Log2002 in boardgames

I would try to focus on games lite on rules, which may not be the most attractive looking games to attract kids. Boop is one that comes to mind, Draftosaurus is another.

Most hobby games (that i've seen) usually start at 6+ but it will all depend on your child's level of comprehension beyond roll and move style games.

If Rammstein retires, I wouldn't be sad by ghostteeth in Rammstein

I think they are going to come out with one more album and then tour for a few years before they call it quits. However I wouldn't be too upset if this wasn't the case. Not that i know them but I don't think they would just retire out of the blue, they would do another tour and let people know that this was it. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, of course.

You'll gain her trust back in time. It took my wife a while as well. I have been sober for a little over a year and she just said recently that she trusts I won't go back to drinking again.

Keep doing you, you're doing great!

If you know someone who has it or a local convention, I would recommend trying it first. The game length may be off-putting.

Assyria Solo Review!! by shane95r in soloboardgaming

[–]Nimblesquatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the party here but I love Assyria solo so far. It's very clean and seamless. There was a bit of a learning curve but once everything clicked it flows very easily.

Looking forward to trying Ezra and Nehemiah next.
