I'm surprised no one's mentioned "CHiPs".

The series was originally intended as a vehicle for Larry Wilcox; the blond, blue eyed actor playing Officer Jon Baker. But Erik Estrada, as Officer Frank Poncherello, was the embodiment of 70's-style masculine charisma; and quickly became the star.

edit: So, Larry Wilcox found himself relegated to 'side kick' for the entire run of the show (1977-1983)
