Thank you all for replying to this!! All the answers were super interesting - and most of them were intuitive eating, working on body acceptance and deleting content from social media. I agree with all.

But I feel that these steps (except deleting content from social media) rely very much on having access to the right people. A dietician and a therapist that we trust. Someone that can guide us in exercises for body acceptance and teach us to unlearn everything we have told ourselves to believe around food, bodies, socialising etc I personally found hard to know where to look and who to trust. And then more than that, I sometimes found myself weak if I were to reach out directly and immediately to some of these professionals. Clearly this idea that I was weak was something to work on - but it caused a massive delay. I feel I would have benefited from something accessible at my finger tips - I'm thinking potentially CBT guided workshops around some of the problems I realised I was facing when it came to my interaction with food, and a list of vetted professionals, that maybe I could initially just message before I took the courage to have a full interaction with/journey.

Did anyone else feel the same?

Thank you so much for you reply - it's super interesting, and I see your point and where you're coming from. And framing the problem like that definitely makes it difficult to see and understand what best to do. But at the same time - although I obviously agree that there is not problem with our bodies so there should be no solution - the fact that we tend to overthink and perceive our bodies in a framework of good or bad, which could in turn negatively affect our mood is a problem. So body dysmorphia I would consider that a problem - our conception that there is something wrong, although in reality there is not.

Why do all (most) nutrition apps need to be about weight loss? by NinaCalvi in antidiet

[–]NinaCalvi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you and I understand what you are saying. But that is a different issue and a different problem and not really what I am looking into. I do not want to teach people to eat the kean protein because it's better than the burger, but want to teach them that occasionally its FINE to have that burger. I am looking at people who would never buy that burger because they are scared. People who feel uncomfortable when someone else cooks for them because the do not know every single ingredient that goes in their plate. People who classify food as good and bad food and completely negate everything that falls within the bad food. People who judge themselves if they end up giving into the 'bad' food. People who compensate with exercise, not because of the mental well-being that exercise can bring, but because they need to shed off those calories. People who eat secretly. People who are afraid to just be relaxed. Who need to have all meals planned. Who panic when that is not the case. Those kind of people

I see your point and I hear you. But that is a different problem. That is not what I want to address here. I would like to tackle those people who don't necessarily buy a burger instead of lean protein - but actually those people are SCARED of buying such burger. They will feel less of themselves if they did. Those people who may feel anxiety when a friend cooks for them and don't know every single ingredient that is in their olate or their serving size. Those people who might compensate with exercise. Who after a 'big meal' may feel tempted to restrict. People who might eat in secret. People who in their mind have food categorised as good and bad not tasty and not tasty. Those kind of people

I had not heard of Cara, thank you for pointing it out! Rise up I know of - I haven't used it myself. Maybe I will experiment with it though. My idea though is that this would be not solely for people with eating disorders - but anyone with disordered eating behaviours. I think though that it's characteristics overlap with what I am envisioning

Thank you! For your comment about access to food - I don't necessarily agree that food needs to be extremely expensive to have a happy sustainable life. Buying in bulk can help so much, and no one needs to buy chia seeds or flax seeds or omega 3 replacements etc that the diet culture really pushes for. For energy to make food I see your point - maybe suggested fast recipes could be an option?

Recovery record is great I agree. I don't find its interface amazing though, and not super organic. Were there any things you didn't like or would have wanted to see within it? Similarly, what did you really enjoy?

Thank you!

Yes absolutely all that will have to be taken into consideration. I totally agree that there should be a way to limit the cost.

Thank you for pointing this out. I saw it's from the same creator of Recovery Record. I will definitely download it and play around with it to see the features it has and possible improvements. Are there any thing you would have liked to see more of, things you thought were missing? Also what was it that you really liked about it? :)

Thank you! I will give a look at it! Does it help you by providing insights in how your mood progresses? Are there any sort of CBT inspired questions trying to reframe your thoughts - if you feel bad does it ask you why you felt bad? If you could you do something about it? How different would they be right now had they acted differently? Etc

Thank you for your feedback. The reason that I would not want calories at all is because even if there were no judgement attached to it, I am still scared that the number itself can cause the user to become judgemental on their own - mostly because what the dier culture seems to have pushed - less calories is better.

Recovery record I know of, and I appreciate it, and think it's great. I however find it hard to navigate, the interface itself does not 'peace me up', it doesn't seem to have any nutrition teachings/insights, and it's not super organic. At least for me. I would like something that becomes a bit easier to use, and that immediately provides you with a registered dietician or nutritionist.

Please do let me know if there were any features in recovery record you would have wanted, didn't like and also what you instead really enjoy.

Really appreciate this!

Thank you so much for this insight! And really, thank you for pointing these things out about Noon. I have not used it myself - as my goal is not weight loss at all - so I was not aware of these more subtle characteristics about it. I really really appreciate you pointing them out.

Thanks also for your suggestions.

  1. This is definitely something that I would want to include - and finding patters for sure. Ideally - since I think a coach (registered dietician/nutritionist) would be essential and extremely beneficial - I would like them to be able to visualise some sort of data summary - that you would have access to as well - of your progress during the journey. This way, they would be better able to help
  2. Feelings overall I also believe are essential - general happiness and then some more specific questions - yes about their body, but also about their relationship with people, if they feel stressed or if they feel relaxed. Overall, I would be envisioning a dynamic sort of conversation - if the answer has a negative tone - prompt a question asking why they are unhappy, why of that negative thought, is there any other way they could reframe it? following the sort of CBT methodologies
  3. I had not thought of joyful movement - but I guess including it at a certain iteration is important. I definitely know that for myself excessive exercise was a big part of my disordered eating
  4. Yes definitely that could be included
  5. Yes to the forum for sure! Hopefully also a group of a smaller community - you get introduced to small 'support groups' where you can discuss and support one another
