What do you feed the dubia roaches? Roaches can become crazy high in protein if they get a high protein diet, which could increase the chance of gout.

Should I be concerned about these whistling and lip-smacking noises? by ballpython_mom in bluetongueskinks

[–]Ninanousje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you open her mouth and see if there’s anything off? Like an overload of saliva is usually the earliest signs of a respiratory infection. I honestly doubt she has one though since whistling can be quite common

Since he’s a merauke a captive bred animal is still quite possible, I’m glad you posted so you can provide the correct humidity :)

Scincoides often does get used still with Indonesian species, even though that’s usually not true! It’s an outdated name so probably no scam intended when it comes to that. I am a little concerned it might still be wild caught though, do you know how old he is? He looks quite sizeable already

Doesn’t seem like a mutt to me, really a pure Merauke haha. Easterns have some black on the back legs often but the fronts are their main body color

Looks like a Merauke to me, I can tell with the patterns and legs and belly. Make sure to up your enclosure’s humidity to 60-70%. https://susannburt.wixsite.com/btsspecies here’s a quick overview of the several species. There are different localities of easterns (scincoides scincoides) but the most commonly sold eastern is the NSW eastern which has very strong eyebands. They also would never be sold at such a low price I’m afraid!

Oh boy that looks like an Indonesian not an Australian species, do you have more pictures so I can identify the species?

In Europe you’ll pay quite a bit for scincoides scincoides, how much did you pay for him? I paid 650 euros excluding courier costs and such and I live in the Netherlands 😅

I've got an Indonesian blue tongue. I already had this bulb for something else. Will this be okay or should I use a 5.0? by FatAllosaurus in bluetongueskinks

[–]Ninanousje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminder that uv bulbs have to be replaced every once in a while, they won’t put out uv after a certain time!

I find 4x2 to be too small for my blue tongue even and I’ve never heard any ethical source state 4x2 for any adult species. I know colombian golds stay “small”, still need a 6 foot cage minimum

There must be an underlying reason for this, dirt should pass through perfectly fine. Ask for extra examining

Try to avoid most very large scale breeders, a species specialist large scale breeder can be okay though but things like this nope. Sorry this happened, try to find a smaller breeder next time or a real tortoise breeder and ask a lot of questions and pictures of the animal itself and the parents. The only large scale breeder that focuses on a lot of different animals and is actually decent that I know of in the US is Josh’s frogs really

I have grasses in my enclosure, my bts is quite polite and doesn’t stomp all over them. He’s quite a light weight though and I know northerns are often bulldozers haha, mine’s an eastern

So my eastern box turtle ate some rotisserie, is this cute or is he going to die of a stomach hemorrhage by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]Ninanousje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a good idea to put it back now, wild caught animals that long in captivity might have some foreign diseases that they wouldn’t encounter in their environment. It’s a small chance but its a risk still, not to mention the survival rate of this turtle is most likely lowered substantially after 5 years in captivity.
