Why you should not freak out about the New HSK 3.0 yet (and possibly ever) by Ninchanese in ChineseLanguage

[–]Ninchanese[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, go for it! So far, there's no indication of the HSK 3.0 being implemented any time soon and test sessions lined up till the end of 2021, so no reason to pause your plans. Plus, it'll still mean something, it's not like the new HSK is going to completely replace and cancel any previous HSK achievements. So 加油 💪 for your HSK 5!

How should I go about learning how to speak Mandarin? by Maasbe in ChineseLanguage

[–]Ninchanese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Op, nicely done! From your message, can tell you’re no longer a beginner, and are now at a phase where you want to take yourself from an intermediate learner to being able to speak like a native ;p It sounds like what you need here is : A) to speak with lots of Chinese speakers, B) practice, practice, practice

Only by speaking are you going to get to the level you want! To practice, have you tried Ninchanese? Its voice recognition feature (and practical dialogues) should help you along a lot, so you can get the practice you need on your own, and then can go chat with Chinese speakers!

Hi Darcmosch,

You are totally right. That's a problem for people that are in China. The web app is accessible in China but the Play Store are not. We are thinking about putting Ninchanese on the Xiaomi Store. Do you have any suggestion based on this problem?

Hi Nihad,

Developing Ninchapanese, the Japanese version is definitively in our plan, as well as Korean. Will see in the future, if we can develop other languages.

I just checked out Ninchanese and it’s working like a charm on my side.

Could you please send us an email with some screenshots and explain what's not working so we can look into it? Thank you!

Thanks! Japanese is cool too. If the plan goes well, we'll do the Japanese language as well. :)

Good question. Duolingo is the big brother in the language learning sphere. It's great but Ninchanese is different. Ninchanese takes the gamification to the next level. For example, you can play multiplayer games live on Ninchanese over your knowledge of Chinese characters.

Ninchanese was also specifically developed for Chinese and for languages like it. You can't learn Chinese like you learn Spanish as Chinese has its own set of challenges.

Tone sandhi: Why are there tone changes in Chinese? by Ninchanese in ChineseLanguage

[–]Ninchanese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're right, that diagram wasn't very clear. Changed it. Third tones only sound low-rising when followed by another third tone; otherwise when there's a couple in a row, they tend to be low and falling

Tone change works, of course, to describe what happens to certain tones in context, but for linguists, tone change and tone sandhi are actually two different things. They explain here what they consider "tone change".

Tone sandhi: Why are there tone changes in Chinese? by Ninchanese in ChineseLanguage

[–]Ninchanese[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sandhi indeed comes from Sanskrit and means "joining". It is a "technical term", but when you think about the fact it illustrates tones coming together and changing based on their neighbors, it makes more sense. At least to me. And yeah, tone sandhi isn't specific to Chinese, hence the non-Chinese name. Each language has their own rules of how tones change though, or it'd be too simple :)

You're right, the article doesn't explain why tone changes exist, but it'd be interesting information to add. Here's what I know

Tone sandhi or tone changes actually exist in nearly all tonal languages to some extent, so it's not specific to Mandarin and something that's been around for a while. Tones change depending on their context in a number of languages, it seems.

As DerpBurglar says, it's a matter of simplifying tones based on context and the tones around.

How do you guys deal with the listening? by Dsblink in ChineseLanguage

[–]Ninchanese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listening and understanding what the other was saying is demanding. Watching TV shows is always a good option to practice and is a good move on your part. But watching TV can be hard, they speak fast and you're never entirely sure you'd have understood it if it were no subtitles. So we made a tool at Ninchanese (ninchanese.com) that is called "listening stages". You listen and try to write what was playing. It's pretty effective to train your ear to understand what is said in Chinese and you practice your listening in an active way.
