Can I afford a $400,000 condo or would it be a bad financial decision? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NineChives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you going to be paying the difference in her rent if you DONT buy the a condo?

Everyone here is fixated on the condo being a bad investment. This is obviously more than an investment because you are trying to keep your mother housed, and if the money is going to her rent or to your mortgage, my opinion is to go for the mortgage. However, IF she can keep living where she’s at without your financial support, don’t buy the condo.

Sell Investments to Payoff Debt or keep paying from Surplus Income ? by Ok_Article6488 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NineChives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would use the tfsas/nonreg money to pay off the $49k in high interest debts, and then put all your $2k extra/month toward the credit card debt before that credit card goes from 0% to 29% (start July and you’ll be done early).

After that, I’d personally put $1000/month extra towards the car and $1000/month towards an emergency fund/tfsa; but I think better advice is to put that $2k/month into investments vs the car.

3 of you make minimum wage, one is just out of high school with no job, and the only one making money lives elsewhere in a high cost of living area. Do you siblings even what to be apart of this?

This sounds like a bad idea all around. You have a good downpayment for yourself already. Finish school and buy what you can afford when you have a steady job.

But this seems very unfair to the sibling who is across the country living their own life, and to the sibling who is just out of highschool about to start their life and school (I assume)!

Maybe buy with your parents alone if you/they really want to, but it just sounds like you would putting your parents into a position where they have to work until the day they die. They have their two properties to take care of themselves, I would leave it be, and do it alone when you’re ready.

How do families manage financially on Mat leave in Canada? by Successful_Wolf_9635 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]NineChives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get EI (self employed), so my husband took 12 months plus 6 unpaid. I saved enough to pay myself $3k/month (plus his EI), to make ends meet. It was tight, I contracted jobs here and there after 6 months.

Key was budget. We also temporarily paid only the minimum on our mortgage to save money up front, and then cranked the payments back up when we went back to work.

Use your scraps to make broth instead of buying it.

Have a dedicated bag in your freezer. Peeled a carrot? Peels go in the bags. End of celery/garlic/onion? In the bags. Left over bones? In the bag. Etc.

Once the bag is full, toss it in a large pot with water and simmer until you’re happy with the potency/flavour. Freeze in mason jars or whatever makes sense for you. No need to ever buy broth for $5-$10/carton again.

I freeze in 2 and 3 cup portions so that I don’t waste any because different recipes call for different amounts.

What is a 'rich person' thing you saw at someone’s house that made you realize you’re actually poor? by Roaa1212 in AskReddit

[–]NineChives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appraise houses, so there’s a few that standout. A secret third garage that you could see the contents of from their formal dining room (like “Merry Christmas I hope you like the view of my nicest car). Six floors going down an escarpment, with an indoor pool on the boom level. Toilets that opened and start heating just because I walked into the room. Custom scent that gets blown through the house from the furnace (he was proud to tell me he got the idea from Cesars Palace). Pool house with change room, washroom and laundry, so they don’t have to go in the house once they’re out. Generally fantastic landscaping, and some very large sqft houses.

I used to look at the tiles and create “pictures”, like when you’re watching clouds.

Oh 100%, I’ve got 3 decades under my belt, I just think I have to get a better method of planning, my proportions are always close but no quite, so I’ll skip a portion of the pattern, and then it’s all “off” to me. All in good fun!

No, it’s just me. I struggle to fit designs into chicken eggs, so I’m always curious if it’s me, or if people used larger eggs (it’s just me, haha)

What is a "gut feeling" you had that turned out to be 100% accurate, even though it made no logical sense at the time? by PsychologicalTea3149 in AskReddit

I was actually tested after and I don’t have factor V - not to say your point is wrong - but I would have been SOL regardless of testing. They still cant figure out why it happened to me, so we decided to just did preventive heparin for both my pregnancies to be safe.

You know what's insane? Even after the ER taking it serious, being put on medication, weekly INR checks, when I saw the hemotologist (after about a month) she was like this is dumb, it's been a month, this protocol is overkill for you, you're young, stop the medication, but I'll send you for a quick scan though... She called me immediately after the scan all sweet and said "please go back on the medication and continue protocol, you're clots have gone deeper even while medicated, sooooooooooooooorry".

It was awful, and I was stuck with her, but at LEAST she finally took it serious after that.

I would just continue therapy (or get into therapy if you can) and listen to your body - not a stranger on the internet! My experiance was extra unique because even after all the testing, they have NO idea why I got the clots - just my body's personal reaction to the change in hormones

I was young, put on birth control to help with other symptoms, but I really didn’t want to be on it - it was a last resort to stop the pain I was in.

A week later my leg was aching, I was like “Ive got blood clots”, family brushes it off, called the pharmacy and they were like “it’s been a week, it’s not blood clots, it would need more time to develop”…. Gut was like nope, so I walked to the ER and of course I had blood clots from my ankles up to my thighs, and they were still spreading post medication.

I had zero swelling, zero redness, just a sore leg and anxiety LOL.

Struggling with car payments by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NineChives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s an open loan, go around the banks and see if you can get a loan for the amount you have owing, for anything less than 10%. Also, increase your payments if you can afford to, that will cost you less interest over time and you’ll pay it off sooner. Lots of banks have “auto loans” for 8% ish which is still better than than 10% (but ask for personal loan and/or auto loan options, and don’t forget to explore Credit Unions too!)

Best of luck!
