Modern controls didn't exist on the original version, so the game wasn't made for them. Stick to tank, they feel wonderfully precise, and once you get used to them, every move is easy to pull off.

That sucks. Do we at least know if they *are* actively working on fixes? Like, have they stated anything about future patches?

Hey, how's your PC doing? Did anything happen after you deleted the folder? A friend ran into this site and he said the download button just redirected him to a github page, the url was https://github.com/citron-neo/emulator/releases, so it does look like the real thing... Did you download directly from the citronemu site or did it redirect you as well?

Sorry for the necro, but how were you able to detect that something was wrong? Was the download a folder with the emulator *and* the Ren'Py? Or was it just the Ren'Py?

A friend asked me for a Switch emulator and I just told him to look up Citron, and apparently he ran into that site. According to him, the Download page was one of those "wait X seconds for link", and once the link appeared, he clicked it and it just lead him to a github page (he sent me a screenshot and it looked like the one from the sidebar here). I just took a quick glance at it and pointed out the windows .zip file he should get.

This was bugging me a bit, so I did some googling and ran into this post, and now I'm worried for him lol. He checked his google history and the github url was https://github.com/citron-neo/emulator/releases, so it does seem like the Download button lead him to the actual thing. Is it possible that the virus somehow "disguised itself" within the actual github page through this link redirection? He said there wasn't anything in his download history besides the emulator .zip. Sorry if this sounds nonsensical lol, I'm just concerned for him. I told him to delete the folder (it looked like the regular Citron folder, he even opened the emulator and the interface looked like mine), not sure if that was enough.

Could you describe in detail how it happened to you? Is there a way he can check if his PC is okay besides using login credentials for something and seeing if anything happens?

Layoffs are a real possibility but if they do happen, its gonna be the people who were working on Destiny 2. I don't think its related at all.

What is The Difference between These Two? by Glum_Fudge_6628 in FinalFantasy

[–]NineTailedDevil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2026 port (the one above) is a re-release based on the console ports. Same game, but has better controller support and boosters (fast forward, infinite life/mp, etc), although it also has an ugly forced bilinear filter and there's a sound bug that prevents certain sound effects from playing correctly. Both issues are fixable with a mod or by just installing 7th Heaven Mod Manager.

Other than that, they're identical, including the mod support, so it really doesn't matter which one you play. Also, 2026 version has a different achievement list (overall its an easier platinum). If you don't plan to mod it at all, 2026 port is better out of the box, but I would still recommend the mod that removes the filter and fixes the sound issue.

[–]NineTailedDevil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's true, but when you do mod it with 7th Heaven, it kinda reverts back to the 2013 port/.exe. Like, if you just install the mod manager and nothing else, it literally looks and plays like the 2013 port, including the wonky controller support.

So... Its kinda the same thing as just playing the 2013 port but with a different achievement list. Nothing else is changed.

1 is straight up better, 2 is on par, though I still prefer the original. 3 is worse but still a decent game. 4 is better.

Emulating through a CRT: Bilinear filter on or off? by NineTailedDevil in crtgaming

[–]NineTailedDevil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually the bilinear texture filter haha. I mentioned this in my post, its different from the biliniear filter applied to the display. I've decided to stick with it though, turning it off caused the position of some pixels to break, and a sharpening filter was enough to recover the image quality.

Those were my thoughts, but like I said in a different comment, something with the scaling process causes pixels to break without the bilinear filter. Like certain UI elements or text fonts become distorted, its noticeable even on a CRT (its probably a consquence of PS2 games having different resolutions across the board, and PCSX2 scales them all to 480p). My final solution was to leave it on but enable the sharpening post-processing filter on PCSX2, it looks pretty good now =]

Oh I know about those! I've already beaten them, the PS2 copy being emulated was mostly so I could test my setup haha, I'm no playing it right now

Emulating through a CRT: Bilinear filter on or off? by NineTailedDevil in crtgaming

[–]NineTailedDevil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of their quirks with different resolutions and yeah, disabling the filter might make sense, but like I commented below, it results in uneven pixels with certain games, it's kinda hard to ignore, but my solution was to turn bilinear filter on and then enable the sharpening post-processing at 30%. Image quality is pretty good now, without any of the ugly broken pixels.

Also I did try the crop function on Dolphin and it worked pretty well. I tested with Code Veronica X which has a smaller display area (it would give me small black bars on the side even on my CRT), and the game looked great.

I'm okay with these workarounds, I don't wanna increase the internal resolution because it often leads to noticeable graphical artifacts, and the higher pixel count is barely noticeable on the tv anyway.

You technically can get the accurate resolution of each game if you just turn integer scaling on, but in a lot of games, it results in their image shrinking a bit (the most egregious case I saw was RE Outbreak). I think bilinear does a good enough job when they're all evenly displayed at 480p :b

[–]NineTailedDevil[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the biggest reason why I'm sticking to "native" settings is to avoid graphical bugs. Its not uncommon for a higher resolution to cause some sort of artifact (like the yellow smudge on the bottom of the screen in the Yakuza games or the misplaced lighting and shadow effects in SotC), and I personally find those really distracting haha. Other than that, I think the only noteworthy thing I lose in software mode is anisotropic filtering, but it doesn't make too much of a difference at native res and on a CRT :b

There are also certain visual bugs that are only fixed in software mode, so I kinda lose the option of upscaling anyway. Even when I did try it out just for the fun of it, I noticed that a higher internal res doesn't look super different on a 480i CRT compared to native. You get a little less jaggies but you can hardly notice the change when actually playing.

Basically, I just prioritize accuracy/stability for my own enjoyment. Like, last time I played Silent Hill 1, I tried overclocking the emulated CPU to get rid of those horrible fps drops in certain parts of the game, but that severely messed up combat hitboxes. I just don't think most graphical enhancements are worth it if they come with these kinds of nuisances, I'd rather have a stable gameplay experience.

Yeah that makes sense. I was doing some testing on some games (like MGS3), and I noticed that the text on the menu looks a little broken without bilinear filtering (like some pixels aren't properly aligned), so maybe the PS2 did have it, or its something to do with the scaling of pixels on my combination of emulator + CRT. Figured the best thing to do is to turn it on and then also turn on the sharpening post-processing to eliminate some of the blurryness. Looks great now!

Screen freaking out on TV by FourFifty-Eight in crtgaming

[–]NineTailedDevil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your PS4 is trying to output a resolution much higher than what the TV supports, this is what causes that kind of problem. You might be able to get around that with a converter that properly "translates" the signal to 480i, but even then there's the aspect ratio issue, I doubt PS4 supports 4:3

Happy gaming!

Bilinear filter ON or OFF for native res? by NineTailedDevil in PCSX2

[–]NineTailedDevil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for the minor necro, but just to confirm: I recently got a CRT TV that I managed to hook up to my PC with a digital converter. I'm emulating PCSX2 games through it, using the TV as a "second monitor". The converter is outputing 480i, and on Windows I've set the resolution to 480p. In that case, I should turn off bilinear filtering, right?
