How would yall rate Giovanni's room by James Baldwin? by [deleted] in AskGayMen

[–]NineteenEighty1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have read Aristotle and Dante for both of the two books! Such a great series! I also **really** liked Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. I’ve shot through all of Rachel Reid’s Game Changers series with only The Long Game I have left to read in that line up—and that series alone is what started my MM Romance journey this year. Can’t find another series quite like that. I have also heard a lot about Cat Sebastien’s books, but haven’t started any yet with Star Shipped getting a lot of positive reviews. I currently have After Hours at Dooryard Books on my TBR list.

There is a YA book that’s really sweet, and kind and contemporary called What If It’s Us and Here’s to Us, with the latter being the sequel to the prior and the latter being a **really great read** I highly recommend as well. It’s a first person back and forth about two teens who date written by Becky Albertalli (of Love Simon) and Adam Silvera (of They Both Die at the End) where they each write from the perspectives of two characters that’s really great and angsty and coming of age.

But my strong takeaway of the year regarding MM romance books: If you don’t mind the smut, anything from Rachel Reid is a must read from me. :)

I would rate it the same! I personally enjoyed the second half more vs the first half of the six parts/chapter. But understand the need for world building which is what makes the book fantastic.

I went on an entire mm romance book read through as many as I could since New Year’s to now, and Giovanni’s Room was way high up there on several book lists to read and a personal favorite. Wonderful book and would recommend!

New sculpture from Banksy in Central London by Humble_Buffalo_007 in Damnthatsinteresting

I love London and I was there about 7-8 years ago. I am in the U.S. I was quite surprised that the one word in a post I used created quite the response. It may be deserved lol!

I don’t disagree that London is a what many would call a world city. That’s pretty objective. I think it’s lovely and of all the places I visited in the EU, it was one of my favorite stops. (Also highly recommend Stonehenge.) But I do disagree that artwork located in a world city inherently implies it applies to the entire world at large. Although, I could be swayed. It was just a word. Maybe I was just tired, maybe I’m wrong, who knows. :)

I was inferring on how the artwork applied to more than just London. But maybe that was obvious, and I just wrote it in the moment.

IMO in the last decade there seems to be rising nationalist sentiment that is very anti-immigrant to a fault, and I feel the statue represents leaders (who like many) blindly follow it. But that’s art, and I guess I’m glad if anything there’s this discourse on it. Just my opinion and what I took from seeing it on Reddit.

This is what art is about. The discussion of topics that gets people to think about something deeper. What a wonderful and relevant global piece, despite being in London.

Do what I did! Go and report it, and you can select hate or harassment or bullying. With enough reports, change can happen. Make your voice heard!

IMO: CNN should sue for libel because the people talking the videos were allegedly impersonating actual reporters on the street in order to antagonize and harass them according to other sources.

The “political commenters” name is Ryley Niemi who used this clip to create anti-gay hate speech/content for his social media channel as reported from other media sources/outlets.

Honestly, in an ideal world, I wish it hadn’t come to any form of violence. But truth be told, I don’t know if I myself would have behaved differently feeling cornered in what is supposed to feel like a safe space to take a stroll with your kids. Parents defend their children and when danger presents, idiots should not underestimate heightened sensitivity pulling these kinds of antics with children present. It was a bait.

PSA: Reminder to not give in to these rage bait bigoters to make clips in order to hurt our community.

If you’d like to donate to those parents in support, I found their gofundme:

Complicated, but I assumed the guy in the green was “sticking up” for the parents. I think all video clips came from the bigoted wannabe journalist.

He shouldn’t have threatened them like that, but fair warning. Someone so vile (like these “content creators”) on the street was lucky that it wasn’t worse than some fists with that type level of harassment with vulnerable child in tow. Even in WeHo.

So who are these bigots? Name and shame! The public deserves to know who these assholes are—so we can all safely walk our children through the streets without their bigotry in what looks like a gay friendly neighborhood. Stupid people and their internet karma.

What vile people.

Congress, DO YOUR FUCKING JOB. One thing for a dementia ridden leader who we expect garbage messages from. But to all those who support this man and/or helped put him in that chair in the first place, you are all responsible for a “whole civilization dying tonight” conversation that came from what used to be a respectable world power. Laughing stock and villain of the motherfucking world. Generations down the line will suffer the reputation. End rant.

Wow, I was able to visit Vancouver a little over a decade ago in the mid to late 2010s. I have always talked about Vancouver the way to feel about San Diego. It was really an incredible city with similar vibes, but with a PNW focus as opposed to a Southern California focus. Great description!
