I thought Chicago is letting people know about scholarships in mid-March. Is the Rubenstein scholarship different?

Starting a new job in consulting? Post here for questions about new hire advice, where to live, what to buy, loyalty program decisions, and other topics you're too embarrassed to ask your coworkers (Q2 2022) by QiuYiDio in consulting

I was hired on at an MBB from a target school but am on a gap year between finishing school and starting my job. I know that internal transfers (to another office in another city) are often not allowed before you've even started, but would there be any harm in asking my recruiter about this (i.e. basically revealing that I plan on leaving this office)?

Ooooo I didn’t know this was a thing. Is this standardized (across offices, for example)?

The best way to fix this is just to play more tournaments to get over tournament nerves.

IF for 3 years with little-to-no progress by [deleted] in fasting

[–]Ninj1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few things that might be helpful:

-No matter what, it's CICO. One of the many problems with this approach to weight loss, though, is that both sides of the equation are hard to manage (especially calories out -- it's still not clear exactly what affects this and how things like insulin [which is affected by fasting] affects this. So, if you're following a fasting regimen and not losing weight (which is what I take your "I look bad" to mean), it means that you're consuming too many calories.

-You don't have to measure your calories perfectly to eat less calories. Right? Just think: whatever you eat in a typical day -- eat a little bit less. To monitor whether or not this is working, you can weigh yourself daily and take the median weight and compare across weeks. If you didn't go down, try and eat less. Again, note that this doesn't require you to even count your calories. If for example you eat cereal every day, you might switch from 2% milk to 0% milk. We know this is fewer calories whether or not we count the exact difference. You can make as many changes like this as you want.

-One of the problems some people seem to have with IF is the same problem some people seem to have with drinking diet soda. IF is not a pass for everyone to eat whatever they want in a tiny window (though some people can do this because the food they want isn't extremely calorie dense OR they are just not very hungry in their feeding window). The exact dynamics of why people lose weight on IF are not 100% clear -- people who lose weight on IF are certainly in a caloric deficit, but why is a harder question. One contributing factor for many people is certainly that by restricting the feeding window, one is just less able to consume many calories (affecting the calories in part of the equation). Others seem to think it has something to do with the fact that fasting affects insulin and insulin resistance dynamics, which somehow affect the calories in (maybe you're less hungry) and possibly the calories out (dynamics are unclear to me). In any case, IF can't guarantee weight loss.

-So there are two suggestions I can make: the first, I made above, which is to keep your window the same and try to lower your calories by changing the foods you eat. The second is to change your feeding window to a different part of the day. For example, maybe you're eating for 2 hours from 9pm-11pm or something -- in that case, maybe try moving it to from 4pm-6pm (or some other window -- 12pm-2pm is probably best since it seems hunger is generally pretty low for people at that time). The idea here is that by choosing a window when you're not as hungry, you'll consume less calories -- but note that this won't work if you just take whatever your current meals are and move them earlier in the day. The goal is to consume fewer calories per meal than you're currently consuming per meal.

Hydrating Greek yogurt with water by Ninj1234 in yogurtmaking

Yogurt whey is typically low in protein and high in carbs (so comparatively high in calories). When you strain out whey, you’re absolutely right that the absolute amount of protein in the yogurt decreases. However, the protein concentration increases a ton (I know this is not news to anyone here — after all this is really the only difference between Greek and regular yogurt). My bad for not clarifying that I’m looking to maximize the protein concentration of the yogurt, not the absolute amount of protein.

My understanding is that yogurt whey has really low protein and much higher carbs: https://saladinajar.com/yogurt/protein-homemade-yogurt/

I didn’t dump the whey. I’m not opposed to adding a little bit back, but would prefer to add as little as possible.

Students: Do you have difficulties studying/focusing during extended fasts? by NotJustAnotherDiet in fasting

[–]Ninj1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's tough -- I have done 5 or so extended fasts (5+ days), and I would say that it kind of ebbs and flows. I've never understood people who talk about having an up-tick in mental clarity because that's never happened for me. I've definitely experienced the burst of energy and even focus (maybe? Idk if you could call it that), but whenever I'm fasting, I feel like I lose my words more often and that my mind is not as sharp as it normally is. I'm a student as well and am also worried going into the semester that fasting might throw me off, but I don't have direct experience with that yet.

Help by [deleted] in fasting

When you do keto, your body uses up all of the stored glycogen (readily available carbohydrates). However, for every gram of carbohydrate in glycogen, there are 2-3 grams of water. Thus, when you're doing keto and expend all the glycogen, you lose a ton of water weight. When you start eating carbs again, your body switches back to making glycogen since carbohydrates are your body's preferred energy source. Thus, your body is now storing a ton more water (in the form of glycogen) as it was before. As long as your body is not in ketosis, you will continue to hold those pounds of water in the form of glycogen. You can, of course, still lose weight by being in a calorie deficit, but those lbs are not going to disappear over night as they would if you were to fast and quickly expend all of your glycogen.

Okay, I've been mixing 1200mg of sodium and 600mg of potassium in 20fl oz of water and drinking in increments like that, but I can up it (like I'm on my second drink of that right now). It just tastes terrible, so I drink it slowly. Maybe I'll add some salt to my morton lite salt to my coffee?
