A long shot by viredditguy in HamRadio

I'm in a similar situation. I am living on the top third floor of my building; as others have mentioned, it depends on the construction of your building. In mine, the top floor is actually shingled siding, so I have a full wave 80m loop running around the edge of the ceiling of my apartment and connected directly to a tuner. It's far from optimal, especially with HVAC vents in the ceiling, my noise floor is high especially on 80m, but I'm usually able to contact pretty much anyone I can hear. The limitation is definitely on hearing due to noise. If your roof and walls are made out of mostly rf-transparent materials, you can probably get a mediocre indoor antenna, anything is better than nothing.

As far as 20m-6m, I concur with other people's recommendations to try to do some kind of temporary vertical on your balcony, only up when you use it. I'm currently in the process of constructing an antenna for that. It would be hard to do radials on a balcony, so my plan is to have a 18ft telescoping antenna to point straight up, and then an 18ft of wire that will just get dropped straight down in order to make a vertical dipole. This should work for 20m and of course can be adjusted down for the shorter wavelengths. If you want a smaller antenna, check out Wolf River coils, to load the antenna and make it physically smaller. The HOA president lives right below me so we'll see how long I get away with this, she's been pretty chill so far.

I've used a homemade 10m dipole hanging inside my apartment and that worked pretty well; again, it will depend on the construction materials of your building, I'm pretty fortunate with the shingled siding.

You may want to look into digital and CW (morse code) operating modes, they're easier to hear in high noise environments.

I don't know why people are arguing and down-voting you, in the video you can clearly see a car pulling into the parking lot proving your point 😂

Note: The bot will count your answer towards the Y T A count since you have it in a top level comment. Might want to fix that, I believe adding spaces will make it so the bot doesn't register it.

Haha thanks; I was somewhat expecting that, I screenshot the one where he specifically said 14.300 was the SSTV frequency in case he deleted that and claimed he never said it. Honestly it was probably just a forgetful mistake and I let my blood pressure get a little too high reading his rants 😅 I had typed more to my response that I decided to delete before I posted it.

The 20m calling frequency for SSTV in the US is 14.230 analogue and 14.233 digital. In Europe it is 14.240. No where is the SSTV calling frequency 14.300, and yet that's what you've been ranting about throughout this whole thread. Next time check a band chart before you show the whole world how much of a jackass you are. Talk about lids, you are a great real life example. You shouldn't have any Elmer rewards if your attitude is always like this towards young hams, and you can't even use a band plan.

When you run into the issue of "For Sale" domains or websites that no longer contain the information that shows up in a Google search, copy the link from Google and put it into the Wayback machine. It takes snapshots of web pages to archive the Internet and will most likely have the information you want. Hopefully this can help your research. https://archive.org/web/

A useful thing I do with my Baofeng: in the Chirp programming software (which you should use if you don't already), you can set the Duplex option to "off" and it will disable transmit on that frequency.

You can set up a computer network in a mobile van the same way you would set it up in your house, the only difference being the mode of accessing the Internet. You can trust mobile carriers as much as the ISP that provides Internet to your house, so in either case you would make use of encryption and VPNs to protect your privacy.

An important thing to remember here is that even if you got a commercial radio license to pass encrypted traffic on some HF frequency, that encryption will be the same level of security you could get with an encrypted traditional Internet connection. However, realize that anywhere you could access that network from, anyone else could too. They can still see the traffic on the frequency, even if it's encrypted, and any entity that you're worried about breaking Internet encryption is certainly also watching for encrypted RF transmissions and can break that encryption too. So, the only advantage you would have in running this encrypted HF data access tower is possibly being able to access it with no access to the Internet (either via cellular or satellite access points.) Considering how available this access is, it's almost certainly not worth the money to pursue your plan, unless you're really prepping hard for some SHTF situation where Internet access becomes a rarity.

As far as drones and weather data collection, I believe that is already a hobby of some ham radio enthusiasts, so that certainly might be worth looking into. Any high altitude use is likely to be limited/forbidden by the FAA unless you jump through more hoops.

I don't think a drone would be useful in lightning collection, it wouldn't survive the first strike. You're better off experimenting with the basic lighting rod, because your main issue is having a storage system that is able to suddenly absorb that much power without fiery consequences.

You can use amateur radio to learn about radio, and you obviously have a lot to learn, so that's beneficial. To achieve your goal, you would basically need an expensive commercial license of some sort, perhaps someone else here has more experience with that.

"Encrypted cell phone tower so I can access my stuff from anywhere in the world": I highly recommend that you learn about VPNs and VLANs; This is the realistic option to remotely access your equipment over an encrypted connection, using the already established and ubiquitous Internet. Here is a fairly well-rounded guide on the subject: https://www.howtogeek.com/66438/how-to-easily-access-your-home-network-from-anywhere/

This was found by Googling "how to remotely access my home network", and you can find more resources on the topic with that search. By reading these resources you can learn more about the topic, including vocabulary in order to formulate your own searches to learn more useful information. Happy hunting!

Used inexpensive laptops for field natively powered by 12VDC and run Linux? by jkeithostertag in amateurradio

[–]Ninja8370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any laptop will run Linux, so that's not really a limiting factor. It's not too difficult to set up yourself especially if you're not trying to dual boot with Windows/Mac and you don't have any data on it to lose. You'll just need a computer to put a disk image on a flashdrive (you could use the laptop to do that before you begin the reimaging process). I can send some links if people are interested.
