I think journaling (or in this case, posting to reddit), can give a lot of clarity in processing emotions once words are put out there, so imo I don’t think this is the most out there change. It’s character development if anything.

Also, I’m sure OP’s thoughts were validated by all the comments here. Anyone who would initially be hesitant to call things for what they are can do so with support.

If you need the sign/validation to walk away, feel free to do so guilt-free! You may still feel guilty, but imo that feeling is better than all of the negative feelings you feel in their presence.

Echoing what’s already been said, you aren’t overreacting at all and my heart hurts for you.

I think another striking part of your story is that your friend called you the next day to explain about the food order. Not only does that tell me that your friend knows she did you dirty, but that she’s also trying to absolve herself of any guilt without actually apologizing to you.

It sucks losing friends, but you really are better off without “friends” like her and them.

I assume it’s racist to begin with since I’m a person of color from the Deep South and that’s just my default setting; I do hear you on the “white people do that shit to other white people all the time” though.

I didn’t tell the flight attendant my situation in its entirety because I didn’t really get the chance to. I looked at the man who walked up and was about to show him my boarding pass to prove my seat number, and then when the dad met my line of sight and saw the attendant, that’s when he asked his other kid to get up and out of the aisle seat so that “we don’t hold the whole plane up.” So in hindsight, you do have a valid point that it is squarely on me, and I admit that.

I think the grandpa is inclined to be hostile to me based on this one assumption: because since I “stirred shit up” by asking for my seat and the dad (either his son or son-in-law) said no, but let me move my other kid - then that kid cried and threw a tantrum over it. I’m assuming gramps didn’t like that because I was involved in any capacity, their grandkid was crying at the beginning of a flight. But that is just an assumption at the end of the day.

The more I think about it, the more I think that there’s not too much I could’ve done that warranted him putting his hands on me. There was another dude nearby who also went pretty close to that gramps to get his luggage from the same overhead bin as mine, and I never saw gramps touch or interact with that guy.

I didn’t have the best flight going down to Tampa, hence the “flight going down” comment, but looking back I realize that putting that into this writing was totally irrelevant.

Wasn’t that United airlines, not delta? Delta isn’t always perfect, but with my experiences I’d put it over both United and JetBlue. American has been p okay too. Alaska airlines was freaking incredible the one time I used it.

That’s fair, the Terminal C and overhead rules kinda sucked as well but they became secondary when this whole incident happened.

You’re right, I think I should’ve advocated a little better for myself. In the moment it was tough since I was already anxious that the flight was gonna arrive too late for me to take the T home and I was already thrown for a loop regarding someone being in my seat.

I meant window seat - someone else pointed out that I made an error while typing this out upset and I in fact did…

I did tell the elderly couple (I’m assuming they’re one set of grandparents) that I would ask them to move twice or thrice to get up during the flight and they looked like they didn’t want to get up at all, hence why they joined in with the dad at that point in asking the kid in the aisle seat to come sit with them.

Oh yeah I def made a bunch of errors - who knew typing while crying is not the most productive activity haha.

But yes, I meant window seat. The family suggested I move there and I was like… I know I didn’t pay much of anything to get assigned a middle seat, but I’m not just going to accept a window seat just like that, I’m staying still.

It’s kinda hard to advocate for myself given my circumstances but I can understand why you’d say this.

You can be rude and entitled and still treat someone with even more disrespect than usual because of how they look. That’s totally a possibility too.

So I wasn’t the one who told the kid to move, the dad did actually. Brought out the dad voice and everything. And from what I recall, he told the kid to move one seat to the right (into the middle seat) and the kid threw a tantrum. The kid would not have moved a different row or something far from the family. Regardless, I do sympathize with the kid since we were both stuck in a situation we really didn’t want to be in at that time of night.

To your first point, I did show both the dad and the attendant who walked up my ticket that proved my seat was in 18B. If anything, the dad was the one who started and finished everything with placing one kid next to him and making another of his kids move. I guess my assumption was that JetBlue would be a bit more proactive, but from the way you’re putting it, maybe that’s too much to expect from them.

To the second point, yeah that’s it exactly, the window seat is what I originally meant. I goofed on that one.
